Wyandotte Campground

Strawberry Valley, CA 95981, USA

4.0
Nice & shady basic campground with great lake access all around (hike down a hill). We were able to secure a walk-in site the morning after we arrived. The first night we stayed at the adjacent Peninsula campground which is similar but has a rep for being noisy, and it definitely was loud.Wyandotte has flushing toilets and sinks but needs some maintenance and cleaning.Little town Port is about 10 minute drive away in case you forgot the chocolate for your s'mores or getting more firewood. We enjoyed several lake access points where you can either walk to or an easy short drive down the road. The main beach is spacious with few shade trees nearby, shallow, & perfect for kids. The spot at the end of the Peninsula is rocky but also has a little sand beach with fewer people. Water is clear and feels great! Stargazing by the boat launch area is amazing. - Thanh T.

Wyandotte Campground falls into the latter category, providing a quintessential high-country getaway. This article will delve into the specifics of Wyandotte Campground, exploring its prime location and accessibility, the services and features that make it special, and why it's a particularly suitable destination for locals across California looking to enjoy the great outdoors.

Location and Accessibility

Wyandotte Campground is situated in Strawberry Valley, CA 95981, USA, within the expansive Plumas National Forest. More precisely, it's nestled on the eastern side of Little Grass Valley Reservoir, a clear, 1600-acre mountain lake known for its recreational opportunities. This location places it at an approximate elevation of 5,100 feet in a natural mixed-conifer forest environment, offering a refreshing escape from lower elevations, especially during California's warm summer months.

Access to Wyandotte Campground is relatively straightforward for a mountain destination. It's located within five miles of the small town of La Porte, CA, on the Feather River Ranger District. A local store in La Porte is just about a 10-minute drive away, proving convenient for picking up forgotten items like s'mores ingredients or more firewood. Roads leading to the campground are generally suitable for vehicles, including RVs and trailers, with paved drives within the campground itself. However, as with any mountain campground in California, it's always wise for visitors to check current road conditions, especially if traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), as winter snows can affect accessibility and lead to delayed openings.

The campground's placement around Little Grass Valley Reservoir offers excellent accessibility to various lake access points. Campers can reach the lake with a short drive or by walking down a hill from their sites. There are multiple access points, including a spacious main beach that is shallow and perfect for kids, and a more secluded, rocky spot with a small sand beach at the end of the Peninsula, offering fewer crowds. The water is consistently praised for being clear and refreshing, ideal for swimming and various water sports. Furthermore, the boat launch area is perfect for stargazing, providing clear, unhindered views of the night sky, a highlight for many visitors. While cell service is generally limited in this area, the overall accessibility combined with a tranquil setting makes Wyandotte Campground a desirable destination for Californians.
