What is worth choosing
Windy Pass Cabin stands out from other local accommodations for its truly authentic wilderness experience. Unlike typical campgrounds that might feel crowded or lack a sense of solitude, this cabin offers a genuine retreat where the natural world is the main event. Its defining feature is the blend of seclusion and a few key comforts that make a stay in the wild more manageable and enjoyable. The 2.5-mile hike to get there is an excellent filter, ensuring that those who make the journey are seeking a quiet, immersive experience. The payoff is a peaceful, secluded setting that allows for a deep connection with nature. One of the most compelling reasons to choose Windy Pass Cabin is the presence of the wood stove. This simple amenity transforms a potentially cold and damp night into a cozy, memorable one. The provided cookware is another significant benefit, as it lightens your load and simplifies meal preparation. The cabin itself is remarkably well-equipped for a rustic setting, offering bunks and cots that provide a comfortable alternative to sleeping on the ground. The outhouse, while basic, is a crucial convenience. The allowance of dogs is also a huge plus for pet owners who want to share their adventures with their loyal companions. Beyond the physical amenities, the reviews from past visitors highlight the cabin's unique charm, particularly the experience of listening to the rain while staying warm by the fire. The cabin’s reputation for stunning views, even on a cloudy day, solidifies its status as a premier destination for those who value scenic beauty. WINDY PASS CABIN Reviews
Windy Pass Cabin is a neat forest cabin amongst the meadows of Windy Pass. A 2.5 mile hike from Upper Portal Trailhead, this cabin kept me and my dad dry over a rainy night. Because of the rain, I can’t attest to the views (I hear they are stunning), but keeping warm to a wood fire while listening to the rain was a charming experience. The cabin is fairly large, with one large room and a loft. The main room contains a wood stove, a cabinet with cookware (pots, skillet, plates, silverware, etc.), a table with four chairs and a set of bunks. The loft is accessed by a ladder and has two cots overlooking the main room. The outhouse is due west by a few hundred feet behind some trees (exit the porch and go straight). There is no woodpile, so expect to spend a good amount of time refilling the wood bin. Good saws and a slightly dull splitter are provided.
