Wilderness Shores - WE Energies Introduce
For Michigan residents seeking an authentic and serene outdoor experience, Wilderness Shores – WE Energies in Crystal Falls offers a captivating opportunity to connect with nature in the heart of our beautiful Upper Peninsula. This campground provides a truly rustic and uncommercialized setting, ideal for those who appreciate the simplicity of traditional camping. Operated by WE Energies, it is part of a larger initiative to provide public access to recreation areas near hydroelectric plants, blending utility with natural conservation. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in Michigan's wilderness, this hidden gem deserves your attention. Our goal is to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of what you can expect from a visit to Wilderness Shores.
Wilderness Shores - WE Energies is located at 1008-1010 Way Dam Rd, Crystal Falls, MI 49920, USA. This address places it squarely in Iron County, within Michigan's enchanting Upper Peninsula. Crystal Falls is a charming community known for its natural beauty, abundant forests, and numerous lakes and rivers. The campground's location on Way Dam Road suggests a setting that's somewhat secluded, providing that sought-after "getaway" feel, yet still accessible for vehicles.
Accessibility to Wilderness Shores from various parts of Michigan is generally straightforward, though visitors should be prepared for typical Upper Peninsula roads which can include gravel or less-trafficked routes as you approach the more remote areas. For those traveling from lower Michigan, the journey involves crossing the Mackinac Bridge and heading west into the UP, offering scenic drives through diverse landscapes. Once in the Crystal Falls area, local signage for recreation areas managed by WE Energies should help guide you to Way Dam Road. The rustic nature of the campground means that while it's accessible by car, visitors should be mindful of bringing all necessary supplies, as immediate amenities are minimal, contributing to its authentic wilderness charm. This location makes it an ideal destination for Michigan residents seeking a genuine outdoor adventure without venturing too far off the beaten path.
Wilderness Shores - WE Energies offers a more primitive camping experience, focusing on basic amenities that allow campers to truly immerse themselves in nature. It's important to set expectations for a rustic visit rather than a resort-style campground. Based on available information and user reviews, here are the key services and facilities provided:
Campsites: The campground features 15 designated campsites. These sites are generally situated directly on the water, offering picturesque views and easy access to the lake.
Pit Toilets/Latrines: For sanitation, the campground provides pit toilets. Customer reviews commend these facilities for being very clean, which is a significant positive for rustic camping.
Hand Pump Well: Drinking water is available via a hand pump well. Campers should be prepared to pump their own water and may wish to bring additional potable water for their stay, particularly for longer visits.
First-Come, First-Serve Basis: The campsites operate on a first-come, first-serve policy, meaning reservations are not typically taken. This requires campers to arrive early, especially during peak seasons or weekends, to secure a spot. A fee of $15 per night for standard sites and $20 per night for "Premium" sites is charged, payable on-site.
Boat Launch/Fishing Access: Given its lakeside location and management by an energy company with hydroelectric interests, the area likely provides access for boating and fishing, although specific launch details or conditions should be verified.
Fire Pits: It is standard for primitive campsites to include a designated fire pit at each site for campfires, provided local fire restrictions are observed.
Wilderness Shores - WE Energies stands out as a unique and appealing option for Michigan campers, particularly due to several key features and highlights that emphasize its rustic charm and natural beauty.
Prime Lakeside Location: A significant highlight is that several of the 15 available campsites are situated directly on the water. This offers campers unparalleled access to the lake for activities such as fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying the tranquil waterfront views right from their site. This direct connection to the water is a major draw for many outdoor enthusiasts.
Authentic Rustic Camping Experience: For those who prefer a less developed, more "back-to-basics" camping adventure, Wilderness Shores delivers. With amenities limited to pit toilets and a hand pump well, it encourages campers to disconnect from modern conveniences and fully immerse themselves in the natural environment of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Clean Facilities: Despite its rustic nature, reviews specifically mention that the latrines (pit toilets) are "very clean." This attention to cleanliness, even for basic facilities, significantly enhances the comfort and experience for campers.
First-Come, First-Serve Accessibility: While it means planning for popular times, the first-come, first-serve policy can also be a highlight for spontaneous adventurers or those who prefer not to deal with advance reservation systems. It means a beautiful lakeside spot could be yours with a bit of timely arrival.
Peaceful and Uncrowded Atmosphere: Reviews indicate that even on the Monday after a major holiday like the Fourth of July, the campground can be "fairly empty." This suggests a generally uncrowded and peaceful environment, allowing campers to enjoy solitude and quiet, which is a significant advantage for those seeking a tranquil escape.
Affordable Camping: With a daily rate of $15 or $20, Wilderness Shores offers a very budget-friendly camping option, making it accessible to a wider range of Michigan residents looking for outdoor recreation without a hefty price tag.
Connection to Natural Resources: As a WE Energies property, the campground exists within a larger framework of natural resource conservation and responsible land management, adding another layer of appeal for environmentally conscious campers.

Wilderness Shores - WE Energies Reviews
Visited area 20. Pit toilets, a hand pump well. Several sites on the water. A smallish beach area. Fairly empty on the Monday after the 4th.
Jul 08, 2025 · Wes palmerRemember this area's first come first serve. They're 15 campsites and they are right on the lake. The latrines are very clean.
Aug 13, 2022 · Glenn HarbinIn-laws make it a requirement to camp here. Its rustic camping so not a lot of excitement there. Great lake to fish and play but that's really all this place has for it. This year they raised the prices to camp here and without any improvement. For $20 I'd much rather be somewhere with more amenities.
Feb 21, 2024 · Josh BGreat campground and the Michigamme Reservoir is nice to paddle. $13 a night if I remember correctly and $20 for waterfront sites. Water at some campgrounds #20 does have a water pump.
Aug 28, 2020 · Jeremy WhitmoreBeautiful place to camp. Lovely views and family friendly
