round pond recreation area
For our New York residents, especially those with a connection to the military community, finding a perfect blend of serene natural beauty and convenient amenities for an outdoor getaway can be a true delight. Look no further than the West Point FMWR (Family and MWR) Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area. Nestled in the breathtaking Hudson Valley, this campground offers a unique and peace-filled escape, packed with options for fun and relaxation right here in our own backyard.
Round Pond is not just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it’s a vibrant hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a tranquil retreat with easy access to the historic West Point Military Academy and the myriad attractions of the surrounding region. Whether you're a seasoned camper or looking for a comfortable introduction to the great outdoors, this FamCamp (Family Campground) provides a welcoming atmosphere, celebrated by visitors for its "breathtakingly peace filled" vibe and "wonderfully packed with options for fun on site." Many first-time visitors are "very pleased" and "definitely returning," a testament to the quality experience offered.
From the clear rules provided in a welcome pack to the genuinely "nice helpful staff" who are "very accommodating," West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area strives to make every stay enjoyable. It's a place where you can truly "unwind" and appreciate the stunning New York landscape, often described by native New Yorkers as beauty that "never ceases to amaze me." For those eligible to stay, this campground is truly a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
The West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area is ideally situated at 1348 Round Pond Rd, West Point, NY 10996, USA. This strategic location places it just off the main West Point base, approximately one mile west on Route 293 from Route 9W. For New York residents, particularly those in the Mid-Hudson Valley, this means relatively easy access to a pristine natural setting.
While the address is straightforward, potential visitors, especially those with larger RVs or travel trailers, should be aware of the approach. As one reviewer noted, the road leading into the campground can be "winding" and "tight in some spots." While some "big rigs" have successfully navigated the path, it does require careful driving and awareness, often necessitating dropping into lower gears. However, other Class A RV drivers have reported "no problems" with the paved road, indicating that a properly sized tow vehicle and careful driving will suffice.
The campground's proximity to the United States Military Academy at West Point (just three miles away) is a significant advantage. This allows eligible patrons to easily access base facilities like the Commissary and Exchange for better gas and grocery prices, which are just a few minutes away. The location also makes it an excellent "fall foliage stop," offering stunning seasonal views of the surrounding rocky, woody area and the beautiful Round Pond lake. Despite being "just off base," as some visitors point out, its eligibility requirements ensure a more controlled and often quieter environment than fully public campgrounds.
West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area is well-equipped to provide a comfortable and engaging camping experience, offering a variety of services to meet the needs of its diverse clientele:

All sites include a fire ring, small charcoal picnic grill, and a picnic table.
- Bathhouses with Hot Showers: Clean and well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets are available, providing essential comfort for all campers.
- Laundromat: A coin-operated laundromat is on-site with good washers and dryers, making longer stays more convenient.
- Dump Station and Honey Wagon Service: A sewage dump station is available for RVs, and a "honey wagon" service for pump-outs is offered on Mondays for a fee.
- General Office/Store: The main office serves as a central point for check-in and check-out, and functions as a small store selling firewood (ensure it's locally sourced as per regulations), bait, ice, ice cream, snacks, and beverages.
- Equipment Rental Center: Guests can rent a variety of outdoor equipment, including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and mountain bikes, directly from the office.
- Fishing Information & Permits: The office also serves as a fishing boat control point, and provides fishing and hunting passes, as well as power boat passes for other local lakes. They also stock live minnows, worms, hooks, and artificial bait.
- Propane Services: A propane fill station is available on-site for resident convenience.
West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area boasts several appealing features and highlights that contribute to its high praise from visitors:
- Round Pond Lake Access: The campground is centered around a clear, trout-stocked mountain lake with an ADA-accessible fishing pier and a swimming beach with lifeguards on duty during summer months. This provides excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing right on-site.

- Proximity to West Point: Its close location to the U.S. Military Academy offers unique opportunities to explore this historic institution, including catching a football game (which can make the campground busy) or visiting the museum and Thayer Hotel. Guests also appreciate access to on-base amenities like the Commissary and PX.
- "Peace Filled" Atmosphere: Despite being near the Academy, many reviewers emphasize the "breathtakingly peace filled" and quiet environment, allowing for true relaxation and an "unplugged" experience, as cell service can be spotty, encouraging disconnection from digital life.
- Helpful and Accommodating Staff: Numerous reviews highlight the "nice helpful staff" who are "very accommodating," making the overall experience pleasant and stress-free.
- Clean Facilities: The bathhouses and laundry facilities are consistently praised for being clean and well-maintained.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Wow, breathtakingly peace filled and wonderfully packed with options for fun on site. The rules are very clear and provided in the welcome pack. This was my first experience here and am very pleased. Definitely returning.I’m not certain how big rigs get up the winding road in or out. In my six speed Jeep Wrangler dropped the gear down to crawl up and around and S curl again and again. God bless anyone with a big rig who can navigate the path.Took a few pictures to give ya the vibe.I’m so happy I found this place and am able to use stay. And, really nice helpful staff on the phone. Very accommodating to my arrival change.Side note, I’m a native NYer. Grew up in the area. The beauty never ceases to amaze me. As a veteran found this location and am so happy. My sis lives in Highland Falls, so it’s close by and it was nice inviting her for a walk and breakfast.Even if you’re from NY, definitely visit. You won’t be disappointed.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💯
June 27 · Ask Miss PatienceThis Famcamp is just off base. It is busy around the football games. The road in is tight in some spots be conscious of the time arriving. Our site was partially shaded and level. A nice view of the pond. Facilities are clean. Good washers and dryers. We were close to the dump station and laundry and the aromas that come with that. The range is near by and you can hear training from time to time. There is an archery range on site as well.Gas and Commissary prices are better on base.If you can catch a game you should. This is one of the most beautiful bases that is steeped in history.A great fall foliage stop.
March 07 · Golden Hour TravelersAway from everything and in the woods around the lake. We have tmobile and only a few spots had connectivity. Spot 17 is really good. There is only one shower and restroom bldg and can be a far walk for spots on other side of lake. Only water and electric hook ups for RV spots with 1 dump station near the showers. The laundry is adjacent to showers and is pay $1.75. There are boats to rent and a swimming area. Places to hike as well. Very quiet. Some sites require leveling. There is a small store on site and a manned office. A care taker is on site 24 hrs. RV Sites ring around the lake and some are up high on the hill. Military ID is required for access. Great place for under $30 a night.
August 24 · ronald hinkleGreat place to camp at super cheap prices. I paid 24$ for my tent campsite. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table setup for use. The campground is very clean and has everything you could need for a few days of good camping. There is a lake at the campground with all sorts of toys for rent at very cheap pricing.
May 27 · ChrisGreat outdoors . We parked our rv here . Electric and water no dump at site but they do have a dump station. Clean showers and they do have laundry the area around is so gorgeous
