Ward Lake Campground offers this idyllic setting, providing a truly remote and scenic camping experience that allows you to reconnect with nature on a deeper level. It’s a perfect spot for those seeking solitude, opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating, and breathtaking views that are distinctly Californian. This article will guide you through what makes Ward Lake Campground a highly recommended destination for your next Sierra adventure.
Ward Lake Campground is remotely yet accessibly located on Kaiser Pass Road, Sierra, CA 91025, USA, within the expansive Sierra National Forest. This location positions it deep within the high country, offering a truly wild and scenic experience. Access to the campground typically involves a journey that emphasizes its secluded nature.
From major access points like Highway 168, visitors would drive east from Clovis through Shaver Lake to Huntington Lake. At the east end of Huntington Lake, you turn right onto Kaiser Pass Road (at the Eastwood Visitor Center). The drive along Kaiser Pass Road is a significant part of the adventure, often taking about 17 miles before reaching the turn-off for Florence Lake Road. Continuing on Florence Lake Road for approximately 3.7 miles will lead you directly to the campground. This journey, described as about "1 hour and 45 minutes from Shaver Lake," underscores its remote nature but also highlights the scenic beauty encountered along the way.
The elevation of Ward Lake Campground is approximately 8,600 feet, which contributes to its stunning mountain views and cooler summer temperatures. While remote, essential supplies and groceries are available at the Florence Lake Store, located just three miles past Ward Lake on Kaiser Pass Road, offering a convenient resupply point. The remote setting means cell service is generally unavailable, which many consider a feature, not a bug, for a true wilderness escape. This combination of a scenic drive and a high-elevation, off-the-beaten-path location makes Ward Lake Campground perfect for those looking to truly get away from it all and experience the pristine Sierra wilderness.

Mar 29, 2024 · JarenAbout 1 hour and 45 minutes from Shaver Lake, this was a remote and scenic campground. We had a beautiful campsite surrounded by golden Aspen’s with a great stone fire ring and a picnic table.
Oct 24, 2018 · Marica CWORST PLACE TO STOP on Kaiser pass. Had a snake den in our campsite and scorpions in our shoes. Bees CONSTANTLY in our food and basically almost got carried away by mosquitos.. AVOID AT ALL COSTSNot kid friendly and barely adult friendly EVEN if everywhere else is packed. Shaver or Huntington are way worth the drive back down if everywhere else is full. Or try jackass meadows.
Jul 21, 2022 · R. MarzoJust horrible! Meat bees everywhere, bears nightly visits have traumatized the children, and rattlesnakes. What a cesspool.
Apr 09, 2025 · Mark DLove this place. Home away from home. Made this trip a birthday tradition 4 years running. This will be year 5.
