It's always a good idea to call ahead, especially during peak seasons, to check on site availability, current conditions, or any specific concerns you might have. For instance, if you have questions about controlled burn schedules (which are managed by relevant forestry services for forest health and wildfire prevention, not typically the campground itself), contacting local authorities like the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation or Oklahoma Forestry Services in advance would be advisable for general area information. The friendly staff at Virgil Point Campground can assist with campground-specific queries and reservations to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit to Hugo Lake.
For us Oklahomans, Virgil Point Campground at Hugo Lake offers a truly appealing and accessible option for a local outdoor escape. Its location in southeastern Oklahoma makes it a manageable drive from many parts of the state, allowing for both spontaneous weekend trips and longer, more planned vacations without the extensive travel time often associated with far-flung destinations. This convenience means more time enjoying the lake and less time on the road, which is a significant plus for any local looking to maximize their outdoor recreation.
What makes Virgil Point particularly suitable for locals is its focus on providing a comfortable yet authentic camping experience. The spacious sites, many with stunning lake views, along with the convenience of electric and water hookups, cater to a wide range of camping preferences, from seasoned RVers to families looking to introduce their children to the joys of the outdoors. The clean facilities, including restrooms and showers, reflect a commitment to guest comfort, which is always appreciated after a day of exploring or fishing on the lake. And speaking of the lake, Hugo Lake's reputation for excellent fishing and boating, directly accessible from the campground's well-equipped boat ramp, makes it a prime destination for water enthusiasts across Oklahoma.
While the mention of a controlled burn in one review highlights a temporary and localized situation, such burns are often a crucial part of responsible land management by forestry services to maintain forest health and prevent larger, uncontrolled wildfires. These are typically planned and communicated, and the overall consensus remains that "take away the smoke and the facility is great." This speaks to the consistent quality and appeal of the campground's fundamental offerings. Virgil Point Campground allows Oklahomans to truly disconnect from daily life, immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Hugo Lake, and create lasting memories, all within the familiar and welcoming landscapes of our home state. It's a testament to the diverse and rewarding outdoor experiences available right here in Oklahoma.

Virgil Point Campground Reviews
First time here, and likely the last. Today they set fire to the camp ground to do a controlled burn. Thanks for the smoke on the first sunny day. Takes a lot of thought to come up with solutions like this.. Oklahoma isn’t o.k. If you are coming to this park in the next few weeks you might think again. Take away the smoke and the facility is great.
Mar 24, 2025 · Lee ArthurVirgil Point Campground is nicely laid out. The sites are large with table, barbecue. And fire ring. Most have lake views. Loop B sites have plenty of shade. C Loop sites are open sites. The boat ramp area has plenty of parking spaces. The restroom/shower facility is very clean. Electric and water available. Dump station is located on the way out of the Campground. The only concern is the vault toilet in the B section needs to be emptied. (Splash back. Not sanitary). I will be visiting Virgil Point Campground again.
May 18, 2022 · Bill DodgeWe liked the site we chose. Great lake view and shade trees. But, only 30 amp service. Grass was very tall when we arrived, and of course the mowers and weed eaters show up the next morning. We were breaking down and the mowers were zooming around us making it really dusty. I had to wave them down to ask if they would mow away from us for 30 minutes so I can get things put away without making a mistake. BTW...there were only 2 other RV's in the entire park and tons of vacant common space and they decided to mow my site and the other site with a nice new class A motorhome. Oh! We gave 3 of the workers cold bottle water when they were using the weed eaters. It was extremely hot.
Jun 19, 2021 · Roger BroadwayStayed here during off-season at Christmas time. Stayed in the southern campground – C. Extremely reasonable for seniors and senior passholders. Worth checking it out.
Dec 26, 2021 · Bryan B.Had a great time here last weekend. It was quiet and uncrowded where we were. The lake was pretty low but that didn't stop us from taking my great niece clam hunting.
