Campground ★1.0

Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA

1.0
Terrible campsite. The amount of standing-yet-dead trees is scary. The dead trees are in & surround the campsite. While this site is rated for 8 people, we found it difficult to pitch 4 small tents. We were terrified that a wind would come up & we would be killed by falling trees. The forest floor is littered with large fallen trees leaving no room for tents. The eating area is surrounded by dead trees whose bases are rotted. On the plus side, the view from eating area is great. The Yellowstone River is very pleasant at the campsite and an easy source of water. I have camped in many places. While I love Yellowstone, I advise no one to camp here. - Christopher Thiry

Upper Ford 6B2 Introduce

For those in Wyoming who seek the ultimate escape from civilization, Upper Ford 6B2 in Yellowstone National Park offers an unfiltered and challenging backcountry camping experience. This is not your typical RV park with manicured lawns and modern conveniences. Instead, this campsite is a true wilderness retreat, designed for seasoned adventurers who are prepared for a rustic and self-sufficient stay. Located within the vast and awe-inspiring landscape of Yellowstone, this is a place where nature is in charge and a deep connection to the outdoors is the only amenity you’ll find.

The campsite is known for its primitive conditions, and it is crucial for campers to arrive with the right expectations and be fully prepared. A review from a past visitor highlights some of the unique challenges of the site, including a large number of dead trees and limited space for tents due to fallen logs. This is a reminder that this is a wild and untamed environment. While the site is officially rated for a certain number of people, finding suitable, level ground to pitch multiple tents can be a significant task. The presence of standing dead trees also means campers must be acutely aware of their surroundings and the potential for a dangerous situation, especially during windy conditions. This is a place for those who understand and respect the inherent risks of backcountry camping and are equipped to handle them.

However, for the right type of camper, the rewards can be immense. The same review notes the stunning views and the peaceful presence of the Yellowstone River, which is a key feature of the campsite. This provides a pleasant and accessible source of water for filtering and a beautiful backdrop to your stay. The rugged, untouched beauty of the area is a major draw for those who want to feel truly immersed in Yellowstone’s wilderness, away from the crowds and noise of more developed areas.

Upper Ford 6B2 is located within the expansive wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, with the official address being Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190. This location places it in a prime spot for exploring the park’s northern and eastern regions. Being in the backcountry means that reaching the site requires a level of effort, often involving a hike or a pack-in trip, as it is not directly accessible by vehicle. The site's remoteness is a key part of its appeal, ensuring a secluded and peaceful experience far from the more tourist-heavy areas of the park.

Accessibility to backcountry sites like this one is different from front-country campgrounds. While there is on-site parking available, this refers to a designated parking area at the trailhead or a nearby access point, not at the campsite itself. Visitors must be prepared to hike in with all of their gear. This requires careful planning and packing, as you are responsible for everything you need for your stay, including food, water purification methods, and shelter. The trail conditions can vary and may present their own challenges, so hikers should be prepared for uneven terrain and potential obstacles. This is a place for those who want to earn their solitude and are prepared for the physical demands of a true wilderness journey.
