Union River Outpost Campground

Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA

5.0
Nice little spot with privacy. Stayed at spot 2. Had to park our car along the roadway for room. Was able to fit a 10 person tent but the ground wasn’t the most level so it took some time to find a place to pitch it. Little sharp rocks so be careful, would also recommend an air mattress to sleep on. Very buggy (late May) so make sure to bring plenty of bug spray. Head nets wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Campsite 1 looked to be quite large compared to ours. Union river miners trail was right near us and offered a nice hike with small water falls and sites of old collapsed mine with some informational signs along the way. The scenery and trails were top notch and make this a good spot to stay. - Shane K

Union River Outpost Campground is located in Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA, within the iconic Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This placement is key for Michigan locals, as the "Porkies" represent one of the state's most cherished and wild natural areas. While the campground offers a profound sense of seclusion and privacy, it is still thoughtfully accessible. Visitors typically make their reservations online through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) system for the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Upon arrival in the park, campers are required to check in at the main visitor center or headquarters to receive their papers and any necessary information before proceeding to their specific site. The outpost itself is easily reachable, with site UR01 having its own 80-foot spur, while sites UR02 and UR03 are located directly on the gravel road leading to the campground. Reviewers note that while the main road is nearby, vehicle noise tends to cease by early evening, allowing for peaceful nights. This combination of an accessible entry point to a remote, private setting makes Union River Outpost an appealing choice for Michigan residents eager to explore the raw beauty of the Upper Peninsula without overly strenuous travel.

Union River Outpost Campground provides a minimalistic yet effective set of services, perfectly aligned with its rustic and private camping ethos. These offerings are designed to facilitate a genuine wilderness experience while providing essential necessities. Based on camper feedback and information from the Michigan DNR, campers can expect the following:

  • Limited Number of Sites: The campground features "only 3 sites," ensuring a highly private and uncrowded camping experience. This scarcity contributes significantly to the feeling of solitude.
  • No Modern Amenities: As a rustic campground, there are "no modern campground amenities or showers," meaning campers should be prepared for a simpler experience without electricity or running water at individual sites.
  • Vault Toilet: A "vault toilet was a short walk from site" (closest to UR03, farthest from UR01), providing a basic, yet clean and functional, restroom facility.
  • Garbage Disposal: "All the outpost extension camping areas have garbage disposal," which is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and natural integrity of the wilderness park.
  • Suitable for Specific Campers: The sites are "ideal for tent, van or compact campers," implying that large RVs requiring extensive hookups are not accommodated. Campers should be prepared to park their car along the roadway for room at some sites (e.g., site 2).
  • No On-Site Water: "No running water is available at any of the outpost campgrounds." Campers are advised to "fill up at park headquarters or visitor center" before heading to their site.
  • Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: While not explicitly detailed for this specific outpost in the provided reviews, rustic sites within state parks typically include a fire ring and picnic table for each campsite.
  • Required Check-In: Campers must "show up to the visitor center and get your papers" after making online reservations, a standard procedure for state park outpost sites.

Union River Outpost Campground offers several distinct features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for a particular type of Michigan camper. These aspects, frequently praised by visitors, define its unique appeal:

  • Exceptional Privacy and Seclusion: The most lauded feature is the profound sense of "privacy" and "seclusion" offered by its limited "only 3 sites." Campers describe it as a "wonderfully woodsy, very private feeling campground," ensuring a peaceful retreat from noise and crowds.
  • True Rustic Experience: For those seeking to disconnect, the "no modern campground amenities or showers" is a highlight, not a drawback. This intentional lack of modern conveniences allows for a deeper immersion in nature and an authentic "rustic/private experience."
  • Accessible Wilderness Trails: A significant bonus is the "lovely river and waterfall trail (Union Mine) that's accessible by crossing a footbridge in the campground." This provides immediate access to "a nice hike with small water falls and sites of old collapsed mine with some informational signs along the way," making the "scenery and trails... top notch."
  • Digital Detox Opportunity: The "No phone reception anywhere near here" is explicitly called "bliss!" by a reviewer. This forced disconnection from cell service and technology is a major draw for those looking for a true mental break.
  • Clean Basic Facilities: Despite its rustic nature, the "vault toilet was clean," which is a considerable comfort for campers who are seeking a primitive experience but still value cleanliness.
  • Wildlife Presence: While not intrusive, the presence of "little animals around but they don’t bother you at all" adds to the natural ambiance and provides opportunities for wildlife observation.
  • Suitability for Tent/Compact Campers: The sites are noted as ideal for "tent, van or compact campers," indicating a design that prioritizes smaller, less intrusive setups, maintaining the wilderness feel.
  • Natural Terrain and Challenges: Campers note that the "ground wasn’t the most level" and there are "Little sharp rocks," which are not complaints but rather part of the authentic, rugged terrain, appealing to those prepared for a more natural camping experience.
