Union Creek Campground stands out for its serene atmosphere and well-maintained facilities. It’s a place where the sounds of nature prevail, offering a genuine retreat from the clamor of daily life. The campground is particularly noted for its spacious RV pads, which provide a comfortable distance between neighbors while still fostering a friendly community feel. This balance of privacy and camaraderie is a key element of its appeal, ensuring a relaxing stay for all visitors. The low traffic and quiet environment contribute significantly to the overall peacefulness, making it an ideal choice for those who truly wish to unwind and reconnect with nature.
For many Oregon locals, finding a reliable and enjoyable campground close to points of interest is paramount. Union Creek Campground delivers on this front, offering not only a pleasant camping experience but also excellent proximity to a nearby lake, which is a major draw for water-based activities and scenic views. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, the amenities and natural surroundings at Union Creek Campground are designed to enhance your outdoor adventure.
Union Creek Campground is conveniently located at 17564 Sumpter Stage Hwy #7, Baker City, OR 97814, USA. This placement makes it an accessible option for many Oregon residents, particularly those in Eastern Oregon or willing to travel for a peaceful retreat. While the address places it near Baker City, it's important for prospective visitors to understand that the campground itself is in a somewhat desolate location, offering a true sense of escape from urban centers.
Baker City, known for its rich history and charming downtown, is approximately a 30-minute drive from the campground. This means that while you'll enjoy the tranquility of a remote setting at Union Creek, you're not entirely cut off from essential services or opportunities to resupply. Visitors can easily make a trip into Baker City for groceries, gas, or to explore local attractions and dining options.
The drive to Union Creek Campground involves traveling along Sumpter Stage Highway, which is generally well-maintained. As with many rural Oregon roads, it's advisable to check road conditions, especially during inclement weather or seasonal changes. Despite its secluded feel, the campground's location on a named highway makes it relatively straightforward to find, even for those unfamiliar with the area. For locals coming from larger Oregon cities like Portland or Bend, the drive will be longer, typically several hours, but the peaceful destination makes the journey worthwhile for a dedicated camping trip. The journey through Oregon's diverse landscapes, from the lush western side to the high desert and agricultural plains of the east, adds to the adventure.
The remote nature of the campground, while appealing for its quietude, also means that cell service might be intermittent or unavailable in some areas. This is a common characteristic of many beautiful, off-the-beaten-path Oregon campgrounds and is often seen as a benefit by those looking to truly disconnect. It's always wise to download maps or have physical copies for navigation and to inform someone of your itinerary, especially when venturing into more secluded areas.
Union Creek Campground provides a range of essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all campers. While it embraces a natural setting, it also offers amenities that cater to modern camping needs, particularly for RV users.
RV Pads with Hookups: A significant advantage of Union Creek Campground is the availability of campsites equipped with water and electricity hookups. This is a major convenience for RV owners, allowing for a more comfortable experience with access to essential utilities directly at their site. These pads are also noted for being a comfortable distance apart, offering a good balance of privacy and neighborly connection.
Tent Camping Options: For those who prefer a more traditional camping experience, the campground also accommodates tent campers. While specific tent-only sites are not detailed, the general quietness and spaciousness of the campground make it suitable for setting up tents.
Public Bathrooms: Clean and accessible public bathrooms are available throughout the campground. While a customer review notes the absence of showers, the presence of well-maintained restrooms is a key amenity for any developed campground.
Quiet and Low-Traffic Environment: One of the most consistently praised services, though not a tangible facility, is the overall atmosphere of the campground. It is described as super quiet and low-traffic, ensuring a peaceful experience for campers seeking relaxation and tranquility.
Proximity to a Lake: While not a direct service, the campground's super close proximity to a lake is a major draw. This offers easy access to water-based activities such as fishing, boating (depending on lake regulations), and simply enjoying the scenic views by the water's edge.
Campground Host (Implied): While not explicitly stated, developed campgrounds typically have a host or regular ranger presence. This provides an on-site point of contact for assistance, emergencies, or general information, contributing to a safer and more organized camping environment.
Union Creek Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts across Oregon. These elements contribute to its reputation as a quiet, beautiful, and highly enjoyable camping destination.
Super Close to the Lake: This is arguably the top highlight. The campground's immediate proximity to a lake provides unparalleled access for water activities. Whether you're interested in fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying lakeside views, the convenience is a major plus for any water-loving camper.
Spacious RV Pads: For RV owners, the comfortable distance between pads is a significant advantage. It allows for a sense of privacy and personal space, preventing the feeling of being cramped often found in more crowded campgrounds. This design consideration enhances the overall comfort of the stay.
Quiet and Low-Traffic Campsite: The serene atmosphere is a defining characteristic. This makes Union Creek ideal for those genuinely seeking an escape from noise and crowds. It’s a perfect spot for relaxation, reading, wildlife observation, or simply enjoying the sounds of nature.
Beautiful Park and Campground: Visitors consistently describe the park and campground as beautiful. This indicates well-maintained grounds, scenic surroundings, and an aesthetically pleasing environment that enhances the camping experience.
Electrical and Water Hookups Available: The provision of water and electricity at select campsites is a major draw, especially for RV campers. This amenity provides comfort and convenience, allowing for longer stays and the use of various appliances without relying solely on generators or limited battery power.
Desolate Location for True Escape: While requiring a short drive to the nearest town (Baker City, about 30 minutes), the somewhat desolate location is a highlight for those who truly want to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. It minimizes external disturbances and maximizes the sense of being away from it all.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: In such a natural and quiet setting, campers have an excellent chance to observe local wildlife. Depending on the season and time of day, you might spot deer, various bird species, or other small animals, adding an exciting dimension to your outdoor experience.
Star Gazing: Far from city lights, the night skies at Union Creek Campground are likely to be clear and dark, offering spectacular opportunities for stargazing. This is a simple yet profound highlight for many campers.

It serves as a good reminder to always be prepared when venturing into more remote areas, a common practice among seasoned Oregon campers.
Ultimately, Union Creek Campground offers a quintessential Eastern Oregon camping experience. It’s a place where you can enjoy the vast open skies, the tranquility of a lakeside setting, and the simple pleasures of the outdoors, all within a reasonable reach for many of us across the state. It’s a destination that truly allows us to embrace the natural splendor and peaceful solitude that make Oregon such an incredible place to live and explore.

Union Creek Campground Reviews
Great camping super close to the lake! RV pads are a comfortable distance apart but you can still clearly see your neighbors. Super quiet, low traffic campsite.
Jun 21, 2025 · Natalie LeeBeautiful park and campground. Desolate location, closest town is 30 minute drive. I choose a campsite with water and electricity with close location to public bathrooms. No showers at this campground.Make sure you have jumper cables or vehicle jumper starting kit. During my stay, I had to ask 4 different groups of people if they had either before I found assistance.

May 26, 2025 · Debra LucasThey need to replace the broken concrete frames in the picnic tables that were installed in 1923.
Jun 12, 2025 · K.L. BrownVery small sites which to me seemed to close together. Especially at RV Park prices. Just water and electric is $35.00 a night. Higher than many parks equipped with showers and a laundry room. I went 7 miles further up to South Shores campground. Set up my generators and paid $12.00 a night for a vault toilet. Also this campground was empty. I just don't understand.
