Twin Lakes Camp Introduce
For Kentuckians yearning for a true escape into the wilderness, where the sounds of nature prevail and the stars shine bright, Twin Lakes Camp in Gilbertsville, KY, offers a unique and authentically rustic camping experience. Situated within the sprawling beauty of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL), this campground is not for those seeking glamping or full amenities, but rather for intrepid adventurers who appreciate privacy, natural beauty, and the simple joys of primitive camping. It's a place that, for many who have visited, becomes an immediate favorite due to its serene atmosphere and unparalleled access to the wild heart of Kentucky.
Twin Lakes Camp embodies a back-to-basics approach to camping, a refreshing contrast to more developed sites. Here, you'll find dispersed, primitive campsites tucked away amidst the trees, offering a sense of seclusion that's increasingly rare. While it's important to set expectations for a truly rustic experience – including reliance on vault toilets and hand-pumped water – the trade-off is an immersive connection with nature that few other places can offer. The campground's location, right on the North-South trail and with easy access to Kentucky Lake for kayaking and fishing, makes it an ideal hub for outdoor activities. Despite occasional challenges, such as the need for visitors to help maintain the cleanliness of the area (as highlighted in some reviews), the breathtaking beauty and the sheer sense of peace make Twin Lakes Camp a cherished spot for Kentuckians who know and love the LBL's wilder side. It's a testament to the idea that sometimes, less truly is more when it comes to experiencing our state's incredible natural heritage.
Twin Lakes Camp is strategically located on Forest Service Rd 104-A, Gilbertsville, KY 42044, USA. This address places it within the vast and diverse Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL), a 170,000-acre paradise nestled between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. For Kentuckians, accessing this gem typically involves traveling south on Kentucky 453 (which becomes the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway once inside LBL), then turning onto Road #104 or Road 105, which lead to the campground. While it feels remote, the well-marked trails and clear directions make it relatively straightforward to find. Its location provides immediate access to the expansive Kentucky Lake, making it incredibly convenient for those bringing kayaks, canoes, or small fishing boats. For locals, this means a manageable drive to a truly wild and captivating camping experience, allowing for quick weekend trips or extended stays to fully explore the numerous outdoor activities available in the LBL area.
Twin Lakes Camp, being a primitive campground within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, offers a focused set of services that cater to a truly rustic camping experience:
- Primitive Campsites: The campground features approximately 14 sites designed for tents, trailers, and RVs, though they are primarily "walk-in" dispersed sites with no hookups for water, sewer, or electricity.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Pits/Grills: Each designated campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit or grill, providing essential amenities for outdoor cooking and gathering around a campfire.
- Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are provided in the form of plastic porta-potties or vault toilets. While rudimentary, they are typically maintained for cleanliness.
- Boat Ramp Access: A significant service is the on-site boat ramp, allowing easy carry-down access for kayaks, canoes, and small boats directly onto Kentucky Lake.
- Backcountry Camping Permit: Camping in this area of LBL requires a backcountry permit, typically available for a nominal fee (e.g., $7 for 3 nights), which helps manage the area and support maintenance. Campers under 17 do not require a permit.
- First-Come, First-Serve: All sites at Twin Lakes Camp are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. This allows for spontaneous trips but requires early arrival during peak seasons.
- Trash Removal: Trash removal services are provided via dumpsters, encouraging campers to "pack it in, pack it out" to keep the area clean.
Twin Lakes Camp is cherished for several distinctive features and highlights that set it apart for those seeking an authentic outdoor adventure in Kentucky:
- Truly Remote and Primitive Experience: It's known for being a "remote and rustic campground," offering a genuine wilderness feel that's hard to find in more developed areas. This appeals greatly to experienced campers and those seeking solitude.
- Uncrowded and Private Sites: The campsites are "tucked away from the others" and offer a sense of privacy, allowing for a peaceful retreat. This contrasts with many campgrounds where sites are tightly packed.
- Direct Access to Kentucky Lake: With a dedicated boat ramp and shoreline access, it's an ideal spot for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing on Kentucky Lake, providing ample water recreation opportunities.
- Gateway to the North-South Trail: The campground sits directly on the North-South Trail, offering immediate access to miles of hiking opportunities through diverse terrain and beautiful forests within the Land Between the Lakes.
- Excellent for Hiking: Visitors consistently highlight the "great scenic hike" opportunities, with well-marked loops that are "hard to get lost" on, making it perfect for both casual strolls and more extended treks.
- Natural Canopy and Shade: The campground boasts "almost all shade and canopy," providing a cooler and more comfortable experience, especially during warm Kentucky summers.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The natural habitat around the twin lakes and surrounding forests offers chances to observe various wildlife, including unique bird species during migration periods.
- Pet-Friendly: Twin Lakes Camp is a pet-friendly location, allowing campers to bring their furry companions along for the adventure, though responsible pet ownership (e.g., leash use) is expected.

March 11 · cLOVErWas here just for a hike but it looked like there were a couple of primitive camp sites and one plastic Porta Potty. So if you are looking for a great senic hike or a place to launch a kayak, this is the place to be. The trail is well marked and loops so it is hard to get lost. Also you can access the water for swimming, but honestly, there are way better spots for that. Come for the great hike.
June 25 · Jeff B (Jeffery)Nice place to camp, hopefully you don't have a schmuck next to you running a generator the whole time like I did...
