For Ohioans who truly appreciate getting back to basics and immersing themselves in nature, Turkey Hollow Campground in Millersburg offers an authentic primitive camping experience. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Holmes County, this private campground provides a serene and secluded escape from the hustle and bustle, perfect for those who are "reasonably self sufficient" and prefer the quiet rhythms of the wilderness.
Turkey Hollow Campground is designed for campers who love the simplicity of tent camping and are looking to disconnect. It's a place where the focus is on the natural surroundings, the warmth of a campfire, and the peace that comes from being truly outdoors. Visitors consistently praise the "wonderful set of views from the hollow up to the road" and the "private and secluded" campsites. As one returning camper updated in Fall 2024, "the site is just as nice with some additions," indicating ongoing efforts to enhance the primitive experience without sacrificing its core appeal.
The campground is managed by Matt, whose hospitality is frequently highlighted by guests. Campers appreciate the availability of firewood and fire rings at each site, making it easy to enjoy a classic camping tradition. The remote setting contributes to a quiet and restful atmosphere, allowing you to truly unwind and enjoy the sounds of nature. While some aspects of accessibility and amenities require a certain level of preparedness, for the right kind of camper, Turkey Hollow offers a truly rewarding and refreshing escape. "All in all, we'd like to extend our thanks to Matt for his hospitality, and we'd stay again if we were in the area!" sums up the positive sentiment shared by many visitors.
Turkey Hollow Campground is located at 7836 Township Rd 102, Millersburg, OH 44654, USA. This address places it within the picturesque Holmes County, a region renowned for its Amish Country charm and scenic rural landscapes.
Accessing Turkey Hollow Campground requires some preparedness, as it is a primitive site designed for a more rugged experience. Reviews indicate that "The road is pretty rough getting there, if you are coming in from SR62 especially." One cyclist specifically noted that the "half mile from SR62 to the site" was "more then a little hard" and required pushing their bike due to steep hills. However, there's a positive update: "The road from the opposite direction of SR62 is in fact paved, but one should be aware that there are steep hills and it was hard to get up them with a fully loaded bike." This means there are options, but steep inclines are a consistent factor.
It's crucial to understand that this campground is listed as "primitive camping only for good reason." Campers are explicitly advised against trying to "haul a trailer or RV down there" due to the "dirt switchbacks" leading to the entrance. This clearly designates Turkey Hollow as ideal for tent campers, backpackers, and cyclists who are comfortable with rugged terrain and minimal vehicle access to their actual campsites. Despite the access challenges, the seclusion and natural beauty found at the destination are often cited as being well worth the effort for those seeking a true wilderness feel.
- Primitive Campsites: Turkey Hollow specializes in primitive tent-only camping. The sites offer a back-to-nature experience with a focus on seclusion and natural surroundings.
- Water Access: There is a "water tap with good water" available for drinking and other needs, a crucial amenity for primitive camping. In a Fall 2024 update, "what appears to be an additional water spigot" was noted.
- Porta John Outhouse: Basic restroom facilities are provided via a "Porta John outhouse," which campers have described as "clean and just a short walk from where the sites are located."
- Firewood for Sale: Matt, the campground host, "has firewood for sale" on-site, making it convenient for campers to enjoy bonfires without having to transport their own wood.
- Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with fire rings, allowing campers to safely build fires for cooking or warmth.
- Power Poles (New Addition): As of Fall 2024, there are "power poles" indicating that some level of electricity may now be available at certain sites, which is a significant upgrade for a primitive campground.
- Online Payment Option: Campers now have the convenience of using Hipcamp to pay for their stay, making the booking process easier.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are welcome at Turkey Hollow Campground, though responsible pet ownership is expected, including keeping a close eye on pets and not allowing them to disturb cattle on the surrounding farm.
- Outdoor Warm Water Rinse-Off Area: Some Hipcamp listings for Turkey Hollow mention an "in the trees, warm water rinse off area," providing a basic but welcome bathing option.
- True Primitive Camping: Turkey Hollow stands out for its commitment to a genuine primitive camping experience, appealing to those who want to "unplug" and avoid the noise often associated with RV parks or more developed campgrounds.
- Secluded and Private Sites: Campers consistently praise the "private and secluded" nature of the campsites, offering ample space between neighbors and a sense of true wilderness.
- Scenic Views: The location boasts a "wonderful set of views from the hollow up to the road," providing a picturesque backdrop for your outdoor adventure.
- Ideal for Cyclists: Despite the challenging access road from SR62, the campground is a popular spot for cyclists, particularly those on the Ohio to Erie Trail, as it offers a dedicated, primitive stop along their journey.
- Friendly Host (Matt): The owner, Matt, receives high marks for his "hospitality" and helpfulness, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
- Pond for Fishing: There is a "3/4 acre pond above the campground that the campers are welcome to fish in." While it was noted to be "pretty fully of algae" in 2020, its presence still offers a recreational opportunity. Swimming is at your own risk.
- Wildlife Presence: The "raccoon population is very much present," adding to the natural wildlife experience. Campers are advised to secure trash to prevent issues. The broader area is also home to cattle, which campers may see.
- Affordable Pricing: Despite a slight increase from 2020, the price to stay is still considered "very reasonable," making it an accessible option for many.
- Mowed Trails: There are "some trails mowed that can be hiked," providing accessible routes for exploring the immediate vicinity of the campground.
As a privately-owned primitive campground, Turkey Hollow Campground's promotions or special offers are not widely advertised through general state park channels. However, based on similar private primitive campgrounds and the nature of the reviews provided, potential offers might include:
- Hipcamp-Specific Deals: Since Turkey Hollow now uses Hipcamp for payments, it may occasionally run special promotions or discounts exclusively through that platform. Checking the Hipcamp listing directly is the best way to find these.
- Off-Season Rates: While Turkey Hollow offers a year-round feel for those brave enough for cold weather, special rates might be available during less popular times of the year.

Turkey Hollow Campground Reviews
Update fall 2024... the site is just as nice with some additions. There is power poles and what appears to be an additional water spigot. The road from the opposite direction of SR62 is in fact paved, but one should be aware that there are steep hills and it was hard to get up them with a fully loaded bike. I was the only one there and there were no raccoons present. The price to stay is higher then 2020, but still very reasonable and you can use Hipcamp to pay now if you like.Original summer 2020....Turkey Hollow is a very nice primitive campground with all you need if you are reasonably self sufficient. There is a water tap with good water and a Porta John outhouse. The location has a wonderful set of views from the hollow up to the road. The road is pretty rough getting there, if you are coming in from SR62 especially. On a bike, it was more then a little hard as you will be unable to peddle up most of the half mile from SR62 to the site and must push your bike. The pond was pretty fully of algae when I visited, and was not usable for anything except look at and perhaps fishing. The raccoon population is very much present, but was not a particularly bad problem as long as any trash or other such items are well out of their reach.
Oct 07, 2024 · Brad SpencerWe had a great time at Turkey Hollow! The camp site was private and secluded. Matt has firewood for sale and fire rings at each site, so we were able to have a small bonfire and roast some smores, then we enjoyed a quiet and restful night. The john was clean and just a short walk from where the sites are located. Note the entrance is down some dirt switchbacks so I wouldn't recommend trying to haul a trailer or RV down there. It is listed as primitive camping only for good reason. All in all, we'd like to extend our thanks to Matt for his hospitality, and we'd stay again if we were in the area!
Jul 01, 2022 · George MajorA great place to stay if you enjoy primitive camping. What you get is a place to pitch your tent, a fire ring, a port a pot, and more quiet nature than you can find just about anywhere. What you don't get is a paved pad to park your RV on, hookups, and another huge RV 10 feet away. It's a good place to stay if you're bicycle touring. It's only 1.5 miles from the Holmes County Trail but that last hill is a monster. Well worth the effort it takes to get there.
Jun 05, 2016 · Stan KingMatt was an excellent host. His campground was an amazing break from the busy day to day routine. I will absolutely go back with my family. Easy to catch fish in the pond! Decent space for a short walk. Everyone was friendly. A great expierence!
May 24, 2020 · Anthony AbitzJust wrapped up our Memorial Day weekend 2013 here at Turkey Hollow Campground. By far the best camping in Ohio. The description is as follows: Beautiful scenery, super campsites, great humble people. Would recommend this campsite to folks who like primitive camping. We will be spreading the good word to our friends and fellow camping enthusiasts about Turkey Hollow. We hope to return soon.
