Trumbo Point Tropical Landing Introduce
Trumbo Point Tropical Landing offers a unique and highly sought-after camping experience exclusively for military personnel and their eligible affiliates, right in the heart of Key West, Florida. Unlike many traditional campgrounds that feature full hookups, Trumbo Point is primarily a dry camping destination, catering to self-contained recreational vehicles. This distinction allows it to provide an incredibly convenient and often more affordable option for those with base access who wish to immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of Key West without the high costs of civilian RV parks or hotels. Situated directly on the water, campers at Trumbo Point are treated to stunning views and the refreshing ocean breeze, creating a quintessential Keys atmosphere. While it embraces a more rustic style of camping, it provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. Visitors often praise its unbeatable proximity to Key West's most famous attractions, making it a perfect base for exploring Duval Street, Mallory Square, and the southernmost point. For those who prioritize location and an authentic Key West experience over extensive resort-style amenities, Trumbo Point Tropical Landing stands out as an exceptional choice. It represents a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the laid-back island lifestyle, witness breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and become part of a unique military community in one of Florida's most iconic destinations.
Trumbo Point Tropical Landing is strategically located at H684+73, Key West, FL 33040, USA, placing it on the Trumbo Point Annex of Naval Air Station Key West. This location is arguably one of its greatest assets, boasting the closest proximity to downtown Key West of any RV accommodation, military or civilian. You are literally within walking distance of famous Duval Street, Mallory Square, and other major attractions, which significantly reduces the need for personal vehicles and eliminates the notorious parking challenges of Key West. Access to Trumbo Point is strictly for military-related personnel, including active duty, retired military, reservists, eligible veterans, and DoD civilians. Upon entry to the base, you must show proper identification. It is also crucial that all passengers in your vehicle carry a valid driver's license or other acceptable ID when returning to the base to ensure smooth re-entry. This controlled access contributes to a secure and exclusive environment for campers. While the campground itself is nestled on the water, providing picturesque views, it's important to remember that it is a "dry" camping area, meaning no individual site hookups for water or electricity. This implies that visitors should be self-contained and prepared to rely on solar power or generators for electricity. Generator hours are typically from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Despite the dry camping nature, the convenience of being able to walk to Key West's main attractions allows for spontaneous exploration and a truly immersive island experience, making the logistical considerations of dry camping a worthwhile trade-off for many. The ease of getting into and out of the campground is also a noted advantage compared to other RV camps in the area.
- Dry Camping Sites: Trumbo Point primarily offers dry camping sites, meaning individual campsites do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. These sites are available as either pull-through or back-in options.
- Water Faucets: Faucets for potable water are available at various locations within the campground for filling fresh water tanks.
- Dump Station: A convenient dump station is provided for waste disposal from RVs, typically located at Sigsbee Annex, which is nearby. An additional dump station is reportedly available at the Navy Exchange Gas Station.
- Restrooms: Restroom facilities are available for use by campers.
- Generator Use: Campers rely on personal generators or solar power for electricity, with specified generator hours, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- Security: As a military facility, access is controlled, and visitors must show ID at the gate, contributing to a secure environment. Passengers must also carry ID for re-entry.
- Access to Base Amenities: Campers have access to various facilities on Naval Air Station Key West, including the Navy Exchange (NEX) minimart and potentially a swimming pool.
- Laundry Facilities: While not directly at Trumbo Point, laundry facilities are available at the nearby Sigsbee Annex bathhouses.
- Seasonality: The dry camping sites at Trumbo Point are typically open seasonally, from mid-October through April.
- Unbeatable Proximity to Downtown Key West: The most significant highlight of Trumbo Point Tropical Landing is its prime location. It is "very close to the Southernmost point" and within walking distance to downtown Key West's main attractions, including Duval Street and Mallory Square. This eliminates the need for driving and parking in the often-congested downtown area, offering unparalleled convenience for exploring the island.
- Waterfront Location: The campground is situated directly on the water, providing scenic views and a refreshing coastal atmosphere. This allows campers to enjoy the unique charm of being on the ocean.
- Exclusive Military Access: As a military-only facility, Trumbo Point offers a secure and exclusive environment for eligible patrons. This controlled access ensures a community of like-minded individuals and contributes to a sense of safety and camaraderie.
- Affordable Key West Camping: For eligible military personnel, Trumbo Point provides one of the most affordable camping options in Key West, a city known for its high accommodation costs. This significant cost saving makes an extended stay in Key West more feasible.
- Ideal for Dry Camping Enthusiasts: It's a "great spot for people who have base access to dry camp." This highlights its suitability for self-contained RVs that rely on solar power or generators, embracing a more independent style of camping.
- Basic but Essential Amenities: While not offering full hookups at individual sites, the availability of communal water faucets and a dump station provides the necessary infrastructure for comfortable dry camping.
- Easy Entry/Exit: Compared to some other RV camps in the area, Trumbo Point is noted for being "pretty easy to enter/exit," which is a practical benefit for RV travelers.
- Community Atmosphere: The military-exclusive nature of the campground often fosters a strong sense of community among campers, creating a friendly and welcoming environment.

Located very close to the Southernmost point, and its on the water, but there are no hookups. There are faucets for water, a dump station, and restrooms. Electric has to be solar or your generator. Access is for military related only. You have to show ID at the gate. If you leave the base, make sure your passengers have a driver's license with them when you return.
