Trappers Lake / Horse Thief Campground

Hwy 8, Meeker, CO 81641, USA

4.0
I can’t say enough good things about this campground. Camp host, Tim, is exceptional and frequently came by to see if I needed anything. The views were spectacular and the weather was perfect. I was here in early October and basically had the entire Horse Thief loop to myself. The nearby hunting lodge is a wonderful place for a hot meal if you want a break from camp fire food. There is no cell service and you will have to drive about 30 min for that. Fuel is about 41 miles in either direction, so plan for that if you are pulling a trailer. The water was turned off for the season when I was there but normally would be available throughout the campground. Tim had buckets of water available for dousing fires if needed. - Josh Williams

Trappers Lake / Horse Thief Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals yearning for a deep dive into genuine wilderness, Trappers Lake / Horse Thief Campground offers an extraordinary escape into the heart of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. This unique campground, nestled in the pristine White River National Forest near Meeker, is more than just a place to set up camp; it's a strategic basecamp for adventurers, particularly those with horses, seeking unparalleled access to one of Colorado's most breathtaking and untamed landscapes. Praised by visitors for its "spectacular views," "perfect weather" in early October, and the exceptional care provided by the camp host, Horse Thief Campground promises a serene and unplugged experience that connects you directly with the raw beauty of the Colorado high country.

Trappers Lake / Horse Thief Campground is situated at a high elevation, approximately 9,720 to 9,781 feet, in the stunning White River National Forest near Meeker, CO 81641, USA. Its address is generally listed as Hwy 8, Meeker, CO 81641, which refers to Rio Blanco County Road 8, the primary access route to the Trappers Lake complex. To reach this remote gem, you typically embark on a journey that starts in Meeker, taking Colorado Highway 13 east for about 1 mile, then turning right onto Rio Blanco County Road 8. You'll follow this road for approximately 39 miles as it winds through scenic landscapes. From there, turn south onto Trappers Lake Road #205 and continue for roughly 10 miles, passing the Trappers Lake Outlet Trailhead. Horse Thief Campground will be on your right.

The accessibility of Horse Thief Campground is manageable for a variety of vehicles. Visitors note that about 30 miles of the journey are on asphalt, with the final 20 miles on a "well maintained dirt road." This road is generally passable for most vehicles, including trailers up to 29 feet bumper to tongue, with some sites accommodating vehicles up to 54 feet in length. However, it's crucial to plan ahead, as there is "no cell service" at the campground, and fuel is approximately "41 miles in either direction." This remote location ensures a true wilderness immersion, making the roughly "an hour and a quarter drive" from Meeker well worth it for the stunning vistas and peaceful solitude that await. Its location deep within the Flat Tops means direct access to a vast network of trails and the iconic Trappers Lake, making it a perfectly positioned base for exploration.

Horse Thief Campground provides a suite of essential services and amenities, specifically tailored to support a comfortable and authentic camping experience in this high-altitude wilderness, particularly catering to equestrian users.

  • Campsites: The campground offers 7 single campsites, designed to accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. Sites are generally spacious, featuring long spurs for large trailers, and each comes equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring for cooking and campfires (subject to current fire restrictions).

  • Equestrian Focus: A unique and primary service of Horse Thief Campground is its specific catering to stock users. Many sites are "set aside for stock users only with corrals" (powder river corrals) for horses and other livestock. This makes it an ideal basecamp for horseback riding adventures into the Flat Tops Wilderness.

  • Potable Water: Water is typically available throughout the campground via a central spigot, with one review mentioning a "threaded water spigot near site 2" which is convenient for filling fresh water tanks. However, campers should note that "the water was turned off for the season" in early October, so always confirm water availability, especially during shoulder seasons.

  • Immaculate Vault Toilets: Visitors consistently rave about the cleanliness of the facilities, stating the "vault toilets had to be one of the cleanest we've ever utilized!" This high standard of maintenance significantly enhances the camping experience.

  • Camp Host Presence: An "exceptional" and "great guy" camp host, specifically "Tim," is frequently praised for being attentive, helpful, and "very good at what he does," even providing "buckets of water available for dousing fires if needed" when the water system was off.

  • RV Dump Station: An RV dump station is conveniently located "just up the road" from the campground, within the broader Trappers Lake area, providing essential service for RV campers.

  • First-Come, First-Served (FCFS): Horse Thief Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. This allows for spontaneous trips but requires arriving early during peak seasons to secure a spot. The cost is typically around $25 per night.

Trappers Lake / Horse Thief Campground stands out with several key features and highlights that firmly establish it as a premier destination for wilderness enthusiasts in Colorado.

  • Direct Access to Flat Tops Wilderness: The campground's location directly adjacent to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area means "walking distance to trails." This provides unparalleled access to miles of hiking and riding trails within this vast and historic wilderness, including opportunities to explore remote lakes and plateaus.

  • Proximity to Trappers Lake: Known as the "Cradle of Wilderness," Trappers Lake is a pristine, non-motorized alpine lake renowned for its native cutthroat trout fishing. The campground offers convenient access to the lake, making it a fantastic spot for anglers and those seeking peaceful boating (canoeing, kayaking) amidst stunning scenery.

  • Spectacular Views: Visitors consistently highlight the "spectacular views" of the surrounding mountains and the "perfect weather," particularly in early October. The high elevation provides panoramic vistas and an immersive high-country experience.

  • Ideal for Equestrian Enthusiasts: With dedicated corrals and long spurs for trailers, Horse Thief Campground is uniquely suited for horse lovers. It provides an excellent base for multi-day horseback riding trips into the expansive Flat Tops Wilderness.

  • Seclusion and Solitude: A significant draw is the opportunity to "get off the beaten path and away from the crowds." One reviewer "basically had the entire Horse Thief loop to myself" in early October, emphasizing the peaceful and private atmosphere.

  • Exceptional Camp Host: The consistent praise for the "exceptional" and "super friendly" camp host ensures a welcoming, well-maintained, and problem-free camping experience, a valuable asset in a remote location.

  • Unplugged Experience: The complete lack of "cell service" at the campground is seen as a highlight by many, forcing a true disconnection from daily digital distractions and fostering a deeper connection with nature.
