Imagine waking up to the unique sounds of the Everglades, surrounded by lush native vegetation, with opportunities for wildlife spotting right outside your door. Trail Lakes Campground has consistently charmed visitors with its friendly atmosphere, unique accommodations, and prime location for exploring the wonders of Southwest Florida. It’s a place where the spirit of the "Gladesmen" (those who traditionally live in and navigate the Everglades) is alive and well, offering an authentic taste of this remarkable ecosystem.
Trail Lakes Campground is strategically located at 40904 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee, FL 34141, USA. This places it directly on US Highway 41, also known as Tamiami Trail, which stretches across Florida, connecting Naples on the Gulf Coast to Miami on the Atlantic. Its roadside location makes it exceptionally accessible by vehicle, whether you're arriving in an RV, car, or truck.
The campground serves as a fantastic jumping-off point for exploring the vast Big Cypress National Preserve, which surrounds it. It's also just minutes away from Everglades City, a popular hub for airboat tours, fishing charters, and access to the Ten Thousand Islands. While being conveniently located on a main highway, some visitors note that the proximity to Route 41 means that traffic noise can occasionally be heard, particularly during peak hours. However, the lush natural surroundings and the depth of activities available often offset this. For Floridians, its location makes it an easy drive from many major cities, offering a quick escape into the wild heart of the state.
Trail Lakes Campground prides itself on offering a range of services and amenities designed to make your stay comfortable while retaining an authentic Everglades experience. They cater to various camping styles, from primitive to those requiring more hookups.
Diverse Accommodation Options: The campground offers a variety of sites including RV sites (with 30/50 amp electric hookups and water), tent sites (both primitive and with electric hookups), rustic cabins with A/C, and unique Native American built Chickee huts for a "glamping" style experience. This diversity allows campers to choose the level of comfort that best suits their needs.
Clean Bathhouse Facilities: A communal bathhouse with hot showers and restrooms is available for all campers. While one reviewer noted some pockmarked floors and cobwebs, generally, hot water and good pressure are reported, providing essential comforts in a wilderness setting.
Well-Stocked Camp Store: The on-site camp store is a significant highlight, offering a wide array of "camp/survival essentials," including ice, water, firewood, propane, and general camping sundries. This is incredibly convenient given the remote location.
Laundry Room: For extended stays or those needing to refresh their gear, a coin-operated laundry room is available, a much-appreciated amenity in a campground setting.
Wi-Fi Hotspot: While you're in the wilderness, a Wi-Fi hotspot provides a touch of modern connectivity, allowing you to stay in touch or plan your next adventure.
Dump Station: For RV campers, a sanitary dump station is available on-site, adding to the convenience for those traveling with their own facilities.
Guided Tours and Rentals: Trail Lakes Campground serves as the headquarters for Everglades Adventure Tours, offering guided poleboat and kayak tours directly from the campground. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available for self-guided exploration.
Pet-Friendly: The campground is generally pet-friendly, allowing furry family members to join in on the adventure (always check specific rules and leash policies).
Trail Lakes Campground stands out with several unique features and attractions that enhance the overall camping experience, particularly for those exploring the Everglades.
On-Site Wildlife and Reptile Exhibit: A major draw for many visitors is the small on-site zoo or animal exhibit, often featuring alligators, pythons (including some of the largest captive pythons in the world), and other reptiles. This offers a safe and educational way to get up close with some of Florida's most iconic creatures.
Skunk Ape Research Headquarters: The campground is famously home to the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, adding a quirky and intriguing element to your stay. This nod to local folklore and mystery provides a unique talking point and a fun destination for curious visitors.
Lush Natural Surroundings: Despite its proximity to the highway, the campground is praised for its "lush and green" plants in daylight, and clear starry nights, providing a beautiful and natural backdrop for camping. The sites by the pond are particularly noted for their gorgeous scenery.
Friendly Staff and Community: Reviewers consistently mention the considerate and friendly fellow campers and the helpful, welcoming staff. This contributes to a positive and inviting atmosphere, making it feel like a "home away from home" for many.
Proximity to Local Attractions: The campground's location is excellent for accessing a variety of nearby attractions. It's close to numerous airboat tours, other gator attractions, amazing trails for hiking, and even a "well-rated, little restaurant not far down the road," offering plenty of options for daily excursions.
Spacious Sites with Amenities: Campers appreciate the spacious sites, often equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, providing ample room to spread out and enjoy outdoor living. Some sites also come with water and electric hookups for added convenience.

For Floridians, Trail Lakes Campground offers a unique and highly suitable option for experiencing the Everglades without venturing too far off the beaten path. Its blend of a primitive setting with convenient amenities strikes a perfect balance for those who appreciate nature but also value a comfortable base camp. Unlike more remote backcountry sites, Trail Lakes provides easy road access, hot showers, laundry facilities, and a well-stocked store, making it less daunting for families or those new to Everglades camping.
The "magical" atmosphere and the sense of being a "home away from home" reported by a long-distance traveler from Texas resonate even more strongly with locals. It's a place where Floridians can reconnect with their state's wild heart, explore iconic ecosystems, and learn about the unique "Gladesmen" culture, all within a relatively short drive. The on-site wildlife exhibits and the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters add layers of local flavor and entertainment that are distinctly Floridian. While one review mentioned traffic noise from Route 41 and relentless mosquitos in late April, these are often accepted realities of camping in the Everglades, and prepared Floridians know to bring bug spray and enjoy the distinct environment regardless.
Trail Lakes Campground serves as an excellent launchpad for locals to dive into airboat tours, explore nearby trails, and enjoy the diverse wildlife of Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. Its family-owned legacy, passed down through generations, imbues it with an authentic charm that truly captures the spirit of "Old Florida." For a memorable, convenient, and truly immersive Everglades adventure, Trail Lakes Campground is an outstanding choice for any Florida resident.

Trail Lakes Campground Reviews
This place is magical. We booked this place last minute on a whim and drove all the way from Texas. When we arrived, we were quickly checked in and there were enough spots to choose our site so we chose the spot right by the pond. It was gorgeous. In the daylight the plants are so lush and green, at night the stars are so clear. All of the sites are close to the bath house, but not so close that you can hear any noise. Our fellows campers were considerate and friendly as well as everyone we encountered that worked there. They have some cool attractions, a laundry room, lots of wildlife, a well stocked camp store with all kinds of camp/survival essentials- ice and water available as well. The location is close to a bunch of air boat tours, gator attractions, amazing trails and there’s even a well rated, little restaurant not far down the road. We stayed at a different campground following trail lakes and we can’t stop talking about how much we miss being here 😂10/10 and we will definitely be returning in the future and recommending to anyone planning a trip to Florida. Thank y’all for a wonderful home away from home.
Mar 09, 2025 · Mariah PesnellWe stayed in Chickee #3. Sleeps 4 Only if you have one couple and two children who aren’t afraid to climb up a steep ladder sleep in “the attic”. There is little breeze and no mosquito netting up there. We were prepared not to have electricity nor water in the Chickee but the campsite it’s on has both. The fire pit and picnic table are 30 feet away to reduce fire risks. The men’s bathroom was Ok but the shower floors were pockmarked and the walls full of cobwebs and bugs. The hit/cold water was fine. I wouldn’t stay there again. I didn’t feel like I was in the Everglades. It’s too close to Rout 41 with cars and trucks speeding by all night long. Bring bug spray. The mosquitos are relentless. (Late April)
Apr 22, 2025 · Payson3I don't like giving them a bad review but I think they earned this one. While camping there we has people playing music and partying un 3:00 in the morning. When we tried to contact someone in te office we got a recording. No one in the management of staff has a phone available after 9:00 pm to answer your call for just this type of situation. When I spoke to staff their answer was "well how would we know?". ITS YOUR JOB!!! We actually left early after complaining because we were worried about the repercussions of turning the people in. We did not believe the staff would do anything to these people if they destroyed our stuff. We felt unsafe afterthis and just left. We will more than likely NEVER camp here again. When we were leaving more people were telling them about it but yet, nothing was done. What a shame.
