It’s a place where you can truly feel connected to the environment, away from the city lights and noise, enjoying the simple pleasures of the outdoors. This detailed guide will illuminate why Tillis Hill Recreation Area is a gem for locals seeking an authentic Florida nature retreat.
Tillis Hill Recreation Area is located at 9231 Trail 13, Inverness, FL 34452, USA. This address places it within the expansive Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest, in the heart of Central Florida. Inverness, a charming city known for its lakes and small-town appeal, serves as a convenient gateway to the recreation area. Accessing Tillis Hill typically involves a drive along a "white crushed limestone" or dirt road for about 1.5 to 2 miles. While one reviewer noted this could get their "newly detailed coach" dirty, others have described it as "pretty smooth even after a pretty good rain," suggesting it's generally manageable for RVs and trailers. The remoteness contributes to the "peace and quiet" that many campers seek.
Despite its somewhat secluded feel, Tillis Hill Recreation Area is reasonably accessible for Floridians across the state. It's within a 1-2 hour drive of major Central Florida attractions and metropolitan areas, making it a viable option for weekend trips or longer stays from places like Orlando, Tampa, and Gainesville. The strategic location within the Withlacoochee State Forest means direct access to an extensive network of trails, without needing to drive off-site to begin your adventures. This blend of peaceful immersion in nature and relative ease of access makes Tillis Hill an ideal destination for those looking to experience Florida's wilder side without venturing too far off the beaten path.
Tillis Hill Recreation Area, as an equestrian campground within a state forest, offers a robust set of services and facilities tailored for comfort and convenience, especially for those with horses, but also welcoming to non-equestrians:
- Campsites with Hookups: There are 37 campsites available, each equipped with electric (30 & 50 amp) and potable water hookups. Sites typically include a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate and/or a grill. Sites are often "paved slabs" or grassy, with room for 1 RV and 1 tent or 2 tents per site.
- Equestrian Facilities: A major highlight, the campground boasts 36 covered open horse stalls (including two designed for stallions) and a communal corral. Horses must be quartered in stalls or the corral, not on campsites.
- Bathhouses: Two clean bathhouses are available, providing restrooms and hot showers. Reviews consistently praise the cleanliness of these facilities and the presence of hot water.
- Dump Station: An on-site RV dump station with two dump stations is available for waste disposal.
- Dining Hall & Pavilion: A Dining Hall and a Pavilion with a large grill are available for reservation, making it ideal for group gatherings and events.
- Firewood: While not provided, visitors are permitted to bring their own firewood or use any wood found lying on the forest floor.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Leashed pets are allowed on campsites, though it's advised to check specific site regulations. However, some sources contradict this, stating "No dogs are permitted at Tillis Hill Recreation Area" due to the horses. It is crucial to confirm the current pet policy directly with the park.
- Camp Host and Ranger Presence: Reviews mention that "Camp host and fire ranger are around all day, maintaining the grounds and answering any questions," contributing to a well-managed and secure environment.
- Security: A gate code is provided with reservations for after-hours access, and a sheriff has been observed patrolling daily, ensuring safety.
Tillis Hill Recreation Area stands out with several key features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a premier outdoor destination in Florida:
- Premier Equestrian Destination: With dedicated horse stalls and direct access to miles of well-maintained equestrian trails (including 12-mile one-day and 24-mile two-day routes), it's a top choice for horseback riding enthusiasts. Trails are wide and sandy, often shaded by a "tall canopy of trees," making them comfortable even in summer.
- Abundant Wildlife Viewing: Located within the Withlacoochee State Forest, the area is rich with wildlife. Visitors can spot bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, turkeys, raccoons, and a variety of birds. This makes it a fantastic spot for nature photography and observation.
- Extensive Trail System: Beyond equestrian trails, the Citrus Tract offers miles of trails for hiking and bicycling, including parts of the statewide Florida Trail. The "Citrus 'D' loop" is a 13.5-mile hiking trail, and the area features varied terrain from sandhill scrub to longleaf pine stands.
- Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: Campers consistently praise Tillis Hill for its tranquility, describing it as a "peaceful getaway" and a "quiet, underutilized campground" where one can "listen to mostly nature," making it ideal for relaxation and stress relief.
- Welcoming Staff: Reviews highlight "wonderful rangers" and "friendly and helpful" staff who provide "top-notch service," enhancing the overall positive experience for visitors. The management even provides "a card welcoming us" upon arrival.
- Well-Maintained Facilities: Despite its natural setting, the campground is noted for being "neat, clean, level sites" and having "clean restrooms/showers" with hot water, ensuring a comfortable stay.
- Natural Beauty: The "breath-taking" nature, including towering pines, oaks, maples, and abundant wildflowers, creates a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities. The forest itself was recognized by the World Wildlife Fund for its beauty.
- Affordable State Park Camping: As a state forest campground, it offers a more budget-friendly option compared to private resorts, providing excellent value for its amenities and natural setting.

Jun 15, 2025 · Jessica CarinaThis is an absolutely beautiful campground(we are at campsite 17 until July13th). Management gave us a card welcoming us when we arrived. As someone with agoraphobia, I have a tough time going outside to thank the staff for the kindness and beauty of what we are experiencing but we love it here. The wildlife we get to experience is amazing. The only "downfall" is we can't stay longer than 14 days. Like I have said, this place is beautiful and the staff have done everything to make sure we are extremely happy with our experience. We will DEFINITELY be back here.
