Tie Flume Campground

Campground ★4.0

Bighorn National Forest, Forest Road #234, Dayton, WY 82836, USA

4.0
Wonderful National Forest campground in the northern Big Horns. Large back in trailer sites with flat paved areas for the fire pit and picnic table. Well off the highway so nice and quiet at night. Outhouses were well kept. Several deer and a female moose wandering through. The Black Mountain fire tower is a great hike within a short drive of Tie Flume. - Benjamin Kennedy

Tie Flume Campground Introduce

For anyone in Wyoming looking to truly get away from it all and experience the tranquility of the mountains, Tie Flume Campground offers an ideal destination. Located high in the northern Bighorn National Forest, this campground provides a rustic yet comfortable escape from the hustle and bustle. The setting is nothing short of spectacular, with craggy granite peaks rising in the distance and the peaceful South Tongue River flowing nearby. This serene environment, combined with the campground's seclusion, creates a perfect atmosphere for relaxation, nature observation, and outdoor adventure.

A key aspect of Tie Flume Campground is its commitment to maintaining a simple, natural feel while still providing essential amenities. Visitors can expect a clean and well-maintained site, with features like picnic tables, fire rings, and well-kept outhouses. This balance of rustic charm and functional convenience is a major draw for campers who want to feel immersed in nature without sacrificing comfort. A review from a satisfied camper noted the "wonderful National Forest campground," and praised the cleanliness of the outhouses, a detail that speaks volumes about the care put into the site's upkeep.

The campground's high elevation, at around 8,800 feet, provides a cool and refreshing climate, even during the peak of summer. This is a significant advantage for those seeking relief from warmer temperatures in lower elevations. The forest of lodgepole pine provides ample shade and creates a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife, adding to the immersive experience. It's not uncommon for campers to spot deer or even a moose wandering through the area, as mentioned in a review. This close connection to nature is one of the most compelling reasons to choose Tie Flume.

Accessibility and a variety of recreational activities are also major highlights. The campground is located just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14), providing a breathtaking drive in and out. While a portion of the road is gravel, it is generally well-maintained, and the scenic beauty of the journey is well worth the drive. Once at the campground, visitors have easy access to a wealth of activities. The site is a great base camp for exploring the Bighorn National Forest, with numerous hiking trails and off-road vehicle routes nearby. The hike to the Black Mountain fire tower is a popular and rewarding trek within a short drive.

Tie Flume is particularly "good for kids," with kid-friendly hikes that are perfect for young explorers. The natural environment offers a fantastic learning ground for children to discover the wonders of the forest, from tracking wildlife to identifying different types of plants. The availability of running water and clean restrooms makes the experience more comfortable for families, allowing them to focus on making lasting memories. The campground's dog-friendly policy is another major plus, ensuring that the entire family, including pets, can enjoy the adventure together.

While a camper did mention the dust from constant traffic as a minor complaint, this is a testament to the campground's popularity as a hub for both hikers and those on motorized adventures. For those who embrace the full range of activities the Bighorns have to offer, this lively atmosphere is part of the experience. And for those seeking ultimate quiet, the secluded nature of many campsites and the peaceful evenings provide a perfect counterbalance. The serene setting "well off the highway" ensures that nights are quiet and starry, a rare find in many other locations.

In conclusion, Tie Flume Campground is a fantastic choice for anyone who loves the rugged and natural beauty of Wyoming. It offers a unique combination of stunning scenery, essential amenities, and a variety of activities that appeal to a wide range of campers.
