Thunderbird Group Campground is equipped with essential services to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay for large groups, making the camping experience more convenient.
Fire Rings: Each group campsite is typically outfitted with a fire ring, often featuring a flip-grate on top. This is perfect for enjoyable campfires, cooking over an open flame, and providing warmth and ambiance, making the camping experience complete.
Picnic Tables: Ample wooden picnic tables are provided within each group site. These are crucial for communal meals, games, and providing sufficient space for everyone in your party.
Restrooms: While specific details on the type of restrooms (vault vs. flush) are not always highlighted in brief reviews, group campgrounds generally offer dedicated restroom facilities to accommodate the larger number of users. Campers should anticipate typical Forest Service campground facilities.
Designated Group Areas: The primary service is the provision of large, designated areas specifically for groups. This ensures privacy, plenty of space to spread out, and the ability to set up multiple tents or RVs.
Day Use Area (Nearby): A day use area on the "other side of the campsite" implies additional facilities or access points that can be utilized, potentially for picnicking or river access.
Trash Disposal: While not explicitly mentioned, Forest Service campgrounds typically provide designated trash receptacles or require pack-it-in, pack-it-out policies. It's always best to be prepared for the latter.
No Potable Water (Likely): Similar to many primitive Forest Service campgrounds, potable water may not be available directly at the sites. Groups should plan to bring a sufficient supply of drinking water or be prepared to filter/treat water from the river if needed. It is always best to confirm water availability beforehand.
Thunderbird Group Campground is rich in features and highlights that make it a fantastic choice for group camping on the Kern River.
Direct Kern River Access: The campground's proximity to the Kern River is a major highlight. Crucially, there are "offshoots of the river with calmer waters" and a day use area conducive to "safe swimming," which is a significant advantage, especially when camping with children or less experienced swimmers.
Spacious Group Sites: The campground is designed with large groups in mind, offering ample room for multiple tents, vehicles, and communal activities, allowing everyone to enjoy their space.
Sandy Ground: The "very sandy" ground is a unique feature. While requiring "enough stakes" for tents, it also provides a soft, comfortable surface for walking and playing, and it drains well.
Campfire Cooking Facilities: The "nice fire ring, with flip grate on top" provides excellent opportunities for open-fire cooking, enhancing the traditional camping experience with delicious outdoor meals.
Beautiful Natural Setting: Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Kernville area and Sequoia National Forest, the campground offers a picturesque backdrop for your group's adventure.
Proximity to Kernville: Being close to Kernville means easy access to town amenities, supplies, and other recreational opportunities in the area, such as whitewater rafting or hiking trails.
Returning Visitors: The sentiment "We been going camping here for years, but we had stopped going for a few years for personal reasons. Time to get back. Beautiful place" speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and positive experiences past campers have had.
Less Shade (Note): While offering many positives, one review noted "less shade that I expected," which is an important consideration for summer trips, suggesting reliance on pop-up canopies or seeking out specific shadier spots if available.

Thunderbird Group Campground Reviews
I Love camping here with my family and friends. We Love it soo much that we had to go visit for the day. 3 to 4 hours driving to get there, but it's worth it. I can't wait to go camping in July this year. We been going camping here for years, but we had stopped going for a few years for personal reasons. Time to get back. Beautiful place ❤🏕
Jun 27, 2021 · Gloria QuenunCamping here was fantastic. I was quite worried about the river being to high to safely swim, but there was an offshoot of the river with calmer waters a 5 min walk away from site 2. The day use area on the other side of the campsite was conducive to safe swimming as well. The ground was very sandy, so make sure you have enough stakes. The fire ring was nice to have, with flip grate on top for fun campfire cooking. There was less shade that I expected.
Aug 14, 2023 · Casey HodgsonThe camp site is very nice and pretty quiet but there is no running water. The camp literally next door has running water but not this group camp.
