Thousand Trails Colorado River

1062 Thousand Trails Ln, Columbus, TX 78934, USA

4.0
I'm a loyal Thousand Trails enthusiast and love most of their parks. But I have to warn folks who want to stay at this one in the summer. If you're in the E-section (the largest section of the campground), you're in for an endurance test. All of the trees in this section have been wiped out. So there is ZERO shade and hot blacktops. Nobody will be outside during the day. And if you have dogs you'll have to keep them in until nightfall. Not to mention all of these spots have your trailer facing direct sun in the afternoon. So have fun sitting next to your sewer hose from noon-8:00 PM.For context we have 2 well maintained A/C's in a 34' 5th wheel and we were sweating inside. We had a two week reservation and left after one night because they didn't have a space for us in the trees. Most of them are taken up by permanent sites. So good luck.I hate to complain about something that will take 20 years to fix. But this was just a result of poor planning. I know I can't be the first person to bring this up.Lastly, on a positive, they're short staffed but super friendly. Linda did everything she could to get us into a better spot but the computer wouldn't let us move. Take care and get to planting! - Pat Delooff

Location and Accessibility

Thousand Trails Colorado River is conveniently located at 1062 Thousand Trails Ln, Columbus, TX 78934, USA. Columbus itself is a charming historic town nestled in Colorado County, Texas, approximately 80 miles west of Houston and 110 miles east of San Antonio. This puts the campground in a relatively accessible spot for many major metropolitan areas in Central and Southeast Texas, making it a viable option for weekend trips or longer vacations for locals.

The campground is situated just off State Highway 71, providing straightforward access for RVs and other vehicles. Once you turn onto Thousand Trails Lane, it’s a short drive to the park entrance. The roads within the campground are generally well-maintained, allowing for easy navigation to the various sections and campsites. While the park offers a "very secluded feeling," it doesn't come at the cost of being difficult to reach, which is a significant plus for campers hauling larger rigs or those simply wanting a hassle-free journey.

It's worth noting that while the overall location is good, some sections of the campground, particularly the "E-section," are more exposed. As per customer reviews, "All of the trees in this section have been wiped out," leading to "ZERO shade and hot blacktops." This is an important consideration, especially during the hot Texas summer months. For those sensitive to heat or with pets, attempting to secure a shaded spot in other sections of the campground is highly recommended. Despite this specific sectional challenge, the general accessibility to the park and its proximity to Columbus (which offers basic amenities and services) make it a practical choice for a Texas camping trip.

Services Offered

Thousand Trails Colorado River aims to provide a range of services and amenities to ensure a comfortable and engaging stay for its members and guests. While the specific availability and condition can vary, the park generally offers the following:

  • Full Hookup RV Sites: The majority of sites are designed for RVs and typically offer full hookups, including water, electricity, and sewer connections, ensuring convenience for RV campers.
  • Diverse Site Types: While many sites are for RVs, there are also areas that can accommodate tent camping, though the focus seems to be on RVs.
  • Restroom and Shower Facilities: Bathrooms are available in various sections of the park and are generally reported as "well kept," providing essential hygiene facilities.
  • Laundry Room: An on-site laundry room is available for guests. While a review mentioned it was "a little dated," it also stated that "all the machines were working well," which is a key factor.
  • Swimming Pool: The park features an outdoor swimming pool, a popular amenity, especially during warmer months. As one reviewer realistically noted, while it might be "a little dirty the few times we went," it's "an outside pool, realistic expectations folks," indicating it's generally functional and enjoyable.
  • Trails: There are "very nice trails" available for walking and exploring the park, allowing guests to enjoy the natural surroundings.
  • Dog Park: The campground currently has one dog park, with plans to add another, hopefully "more central to the sites and larger to allow the dogs to run around a bit!" This highlights the park's commitment to being pet-friendly.
  • Recreational Facilities: Beyond the pool and trails, the park often provides other recreational options like a fishing pond, and potentially spaces for activities such as mini-golf or playgrounds, though specific details vary.
  • Staff Assistance: Despite being "short staffed" at times, the personnel, like Linda mentioned in a review, are described as "super friendly" and genuinely "willing to help with anything needed," demonstrating a commitment to guest satisfaction.
  • On-site Store/Office: A central office serves for check-ins, inquiries, and potentially a small store for basic camping necessities.

These services, while subject to the nuances of a large park and staffing levels, generally cover the essential needs and common desires of campers.

Features / Highlights

Thousand Trails Colorado River offers several appealing features and highlights that draw campers to its location, providing a diverse outdoor experience.

  • Colorado River Access: A significant highlight is the direct access to the Colorado River. While a review mentioned the "Boat ramp appears to be overgrown by weeds and snake friendly," it still offers the potential for river-based activities, fishing, or simply enjoying the scenic views of the river.
  • Abundant Wildlife: The park is known for its active wildlife. Reviewers consistently mention "deer every evening and other critters running around," providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, which enhances the natural ambiance.
  • Secluded Feeling: Despite being a large campground, many areas offer a "very secluded feeling," allowing campers to enjoy a sense of privacy and tranquility amidst nature. This is particularly appealing for those seeking an escape from urban environments.
  • Friendly and Helpful Staff: A recurring positive theme in reviews is the "super helpful and engaging" and "super friendly" staff. Their dedication to assisting guests, even when "short staffed," contributes significantly to a positive experience.
  • Level and Accessible Sites: Many sites are described as "pretty level and easy in and out (PT - pull-through)," which is a considerable advantage for RVers, making setup and departure less stressful.
  • Extensive Trails: The presence of "very nice trails" allows for enjoyable walks and exploration within the park, catering to those who enjoy gentle strolls through nature.
  • Fishing Pond: A fishing pond on the premises offers an additional recreational option for anglers, though caution is advised around it due to potential fire ant presence.

While some challenges like the lack of shade in the E-section and fire ants have been noted, the park's natural beauty, wildlife, and commitment to guest service remain strong highlights, offering a genuine connection to the Texas outdoors.
