For Wisconsin locals seeking a truly distinctive and rejuvenating escape into nature, The English Pale Campground and Resort in Melrose, WI, stands out as a premier destination. This isn't just another campground; it's a carefully crafted experience designed for those who appreciate rustic charm, serene natural beauty, and a touch of personalized service. As glowing reviews attest, guests consistently find it to be the "best rustic camping spot" they've ever stayed at, praising its "gorgeous scenery" and the accommodating nature of its host, Cal. Specializing in an adult-only environment (with exceptions for full property takeovers), The English Pale provides a tranquil retreat where you can truly unwind and reconnect with the outdoors.
Opened in 2021, The English Pale is a developing property spanning 70 acres, including a mile of stunning Black River frontage. This allows for a variety of camping experiences, from secluded tent sites right on a sprawling 4-acre sandy beach to rustic RV/tent sites elevated above the river. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, perhaps even spotting "Eagles fishing," as one delighted camper described. The commitment to providing an unparalleled natural setting, combined with thoughtful amenities and dedicated service, sets The English Pale apart. It's a place where privacy is cherished, dogs are welcomed (often off-leash at some sites), and the focus is firmly on immersing yourself in the peaceful Wisconsin wilderness.
The philosophy behind The English Pale is to offer a "just a touch off the grid" river adventure. While it caters to adults seeking a quiet retreat, it's explicitly not a party campground. Instead, the goal is to foster a connection with nature, allowing guests to relax under the stars and truly de-stress. Even in challenging weather, as one review highlighted, the host's attentiveness, checking in on campers and warning of potential flooding, speaks volumes about the personalized care you can expect. For those who value a serene, beautiful, and accommodating rustic camping experience in Wisconsin, The English Pale Campground and Resort is truly an exceptional choice. It's an invitation to create lasting memories in a beautiful, natural setting that feels both wild and welcoming.
The atmosphere here is one of relaxed authenticity. It's where the beauty of the Black River, with its vast sandbars, becomes a natural playground for both people and their canine companions. The blend of secluded sites, stunning river views, and trails winding through the woods ensures that every guest finds their perfect slice of tranquility. Whether you're a seasoned rustic camper or looking to dip your toes into a more natural camping style, The English Pale offers a supportive and breathtaking environment.

The English Pale Campground and Resort Reviews
A few of us stayed at campsite #4 on the beach and it was a great time! Cal is extremely accommodating with transportation to camp, chopped firewood, ice, and even alcohol if you want. We weathered rain for almost 2 days, but Cal made sure to come down and check on us and warned us of potential flooding. The river was amazing and us and our dogs had the best time! We even had a double rainbow right in on the river.
Jul 07, 2024 · Fayth SeibelBest rustic camping spot I've ever stayed at. Eagles fishing, private sandy beach dogs off leash.
May 27, 2025 · ricky yawnThis is our 3 rd. year 8th time camping at the English Pale. It is very quiet and peaceful. Our Golden Retrievers I think like it as much as we do. We are definitely Glampers and Cal makes every effort to make sure our stay is a memorable one. There is always a stack of firewood waiting when we get there. The beach is right along the Black River and is very nice for swimming, kayaking or tubing. Cal is constantly making improvements, and it shows. The property is very clean and maintained. See you next year.
