This is a wonderful Campground. although all Campsites are not the same. You have some real stinkers and some very nice ones. I camped at # 51 Some comment on how much space the 51 -54 .Well I guess it depends on your view of space. 51 is not suit for a big tent . a small tent would be fine. Why I gave this a five star the campsite would be at 3 star. The two camp hosts Rust and Bill are wonderful; they run a tight ship. They keep the campground clean and quiet(It's not a party Campground!) And they stay on top of making sure you're keeping your bear box closed and put your campfire out completely. They go around checking that twice a day. They're very friendly and knowledgeable. I will be back next summer but not at 51!!! - Dick Tandy

Tamarack Flat Campground Introduce

For Californians dreaming of an authentic and tranquil escape into the heart of Yosemite National Park, Tamarack Flat Campground offers a truly unique and refreshing experience. Nestled at an elevation of 6,300 feet, this campground provides a serene and relatively remote setting, perfect for those who seek to immerse themselves in nature away from the more bustling areas of Yosemite Valley. Unlike some of the larger, more developed campgrounds, Tamarack Flat embraces a primitive charm, inviting campers to connect with the wilderness on a deeper level. This article aims to guide residents across the Golden State through the distinctive offerings of Tamarack Flat Campground, highlighting its secluded location, essential services, and why it's considered a "real gem" for those who value peace, natural beauty, and a less crowded Yosemite adventure.

Tamarack Flat Campground is located off the scenic Tioga Pass Road, within Yosemite National Park, CA 95389, USA. Its precise location is approximately 20 miles (about 45 minutes drive) from Yosemite Valley, just east of Crane Flat. This provides a balance of being within the National Park's boundaries while offering a sense of seclusion. The campground is accessed via a roughly 3-mile, narrow, single-lane road that winds through the woods. This road, recently paved as of some reviews, contributes to the campground's remote feeling, making it less suitable for large RVs and trailers. For Californians driving from various parts of the state, accessing Yosemite National Park typically involves Highway 120 (Tioga Road, which is seasonal), Highway 140 (El Portal Road), or Highway 41 (Wawona Road). Tamarack Flat is situated off Tioga Road, meaning its opening and closing dates are tied to the seasonal availability of this mountain pass, typically from sometime in June through mid-October. This upper elevation location offers a different ecosystem and experience compared to the Valley floor, with cooler temperatures and distinct flora. Despite its "remote feeling," its position on the Tioga Road corridor means it serves as a convenient base for exploring both Yosemite Valley (a 25-mile drive away) and the high-country wonders of Tuolumne Meadows, as well as the nearby giant sequoia groves at Tuolumne and Merced.

Tamarack Flat Campground provides a primitive camping experience, meaning the services are minimal but designed to support a self-reliant stay in the wilderness. The emphasis is on connecting with nature rather than relying on extensive amenities.

  • Vault Toilets: The campground offers vault toilets, which are basic, non-flush restroom facilities. While some reviews praise their cleanliness ("The vault bathrooms were clean and well-supplied"), it's important to set expectations for a primitive setting.
  • Picnic Tables: Each individual campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining outdoors.
  • Fire Rings: Every campsite includes a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires, provided that current fire restrictions are not in effect. Camp hosts actively ensure campfires are completely extinguished.
  • Food Storage Lockers: Critically important in Yosemite's bear country, each campsite comes with a bear-proof food storage locker (measuring approximately 35" D x 43" W x 28" H or 33″ D x 45″ W x 18″ H depending on specific site and information source), which is mandatory for storing all food and scented items away from wildlife. Camp hosts routinely check that these are properly closed.
  • On-Site Camp Hosts: As highlighted by enthusiastic reviewers, "The two camp hosts Rust and Bill are wonderful; they run a tight ship. They keep the campground clean and quiet... They go around checking that twice a day. They're very friendly and knowledgeable." The presence of dedicated camp hosts significantly enhances the safety, cleanliness, and overall experience.
  • Trash/Recycling Collection: Seasonal trash and recycling collection are available, aiding in maintaining the cleanliness of the campground.

It is crucial to note what is *not* offered:

  • No Potable Water: Campers must bring their own drinking water, or be prepared to treat (boil, filter, or use iodine) water from Tamarack Creek, the only water source in the campground.
  • No Showers or Laundry: There are no showers or laundry facilities on site, reinforcing the primitive nature. Showers are available in Yosemite Valley (e.g., Curry Village).
  • No RV Hookups or Dump Station: RVs and trailers are not recommended due to the access road, and there are no hookups or dump stations. The closest dump station is in Yosemite Valley (Upper Pines Campground).
  • No Cell Phone Reception or Internet Connectivity: This provides an opportunity for a true digital detox and uninterrupted connection with nature.
  • No Camp Store or Firewood/Ice Sales: Campers need to be self-sufficient and bring all necessary supplies, including firewood, which can be purchased at Crane Flat or Yosemite Valley.

The true allure of Tamarack Flat Campground lies in its distinctive features and highlights, which appeal strongly to those seeking a more authentic and tranquil Yosemite experience.

  • Quiet and Secluded Atmosphere: A standout highlight, repeatedly emphasized by reviewers, is its calm and peaceful nature. "It's not a party Campground!" one reviewer exclaimed, while another noted its "Beautiful calm campground with a remote feeling." This offers a significant contrast to the busier Valley campgrounds.
  • Dedicated and Friendly Camp Hosts: The presence of "wonderful" and "very friendly and knowledgeable" camp hosts like Rust and Bill is a major asset, contributing to a well-maintained, quiet, and secure environment.
  • Newly-Paved Access Road: The "smooth newly-paved single lane road leading to it through the woods" makes access surprisingly pleasant for a primitive campground, despite its narrowness.
  • Natural Play Areas: The environment offers "Small stream and many boulders for kids to climb on and explore," providing natural recreational opportunities for families.
  • Primitive Charm: For those who appreciate a genuine outdoor experience with "minimal facilities," Tamarack Flat is a "real gem," especially when compared to the "busy Upper Pines Campground."
  • Bear-Aware Environment: The strict enforcement of bear box usage by camp hosts ensures a safer coexistence with Yosemite's wildlife, which is crucial for protecting both campers and bears.
  • Hiking Opportunities: A hiking and backpacking trail leaves from the campground, leading to areas such as Cascade Creek, El Capitan (a long trek), and other points along the North Rim of Yosemite Valley.
  • Stargazing: The remote location and lack of light pollution create excellent conditions for stargazing.
  • Elevation Benefits: At 6,300 feet, the campground enjoys cooler temperatures than Yosemite Valley during warmer months.

For locals who might find the bustling atmosphere of Yosemite Valley campgrounds overwhelming, Tamarack Flat offers a much-needed sanctuary of peace and seclusion. Its "remote feeling" yet relatively smooth access road provides a unique balance, appealing to those who desire a deeper connection with nature without venturing into the backcountry. The invaluable presence of dedicated and knowledgeable camp hosts, who "run a tight ship" by maintaining cleanliness and ensuring bear safety, significantly enhances the overall quality of the stay, creating a secure and enjoyable environment. While the lack of potable water and showers necessitates self-reliance, this characteristic is precisely what attracts many seasoned California campers who appreciate "minimal facilities" and the opportunity to truly unplug, as there is no cell service or internet. The varied campsite sizes, catering more to smaller tents, means it's ideal for individual adventurers, couples, or small families. Its location near the Tioga Road allows for convenient exploration of both the iconic Yosemite Valley and the high-country wonders, offering a broader Yosemite adventure. For Californians valuing a calm, clean, and genuinely natural setting, where the sounds of the forest replace urban noise and the stars shine brightly, Tamarack Flat Campground stands as a "real gem," promising an unforgettable and tranquil Yosemite experience.
