SWC Campground is located in Beaver Bay Township, MN 55616, USA, identified by the geographical coordinates 6J5F+HG. This placement is incredibly significant as it situates the campground directly on Minnesota's famed North Shore of Lake Superior. While the campground itself may not offer direct "big lake" views, its proximity to the stunning coastline and the numerous attractions along Highway 61 is a major advantage.
Its location in Beaver Bay Township places it within easy reach of popular North Shore destinations. For instance, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, a Minnesota icon, is nearby, offering historic tours, incredible views, and additional hiking opportunities. Gooseberry Falls State Park, another beloved spot with its magnificent waterfalls, is also a short drive away. The convenience of this location allows campers to easily access these natural wonders and scenic viewpoints along the North Shore.
A particularly significant highlight of SWC Campground's location is its direct access to the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. As one reviewer enthusiastically noted, "If you bike, it is on the Gichi Gammi trail so you bike from your campsite up and down the north shore." This paved trail is a paradise for cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters, offering miles of scenic pathways through forests and along the Lake Superior shoreline, connecting various state parks and communities. For locals, this means less time driving and more time actively enjoying the outdoors right from their campsite. While the campground may be relatively new, implying some distance from established businesses, the nearby communities of Beaver Bay and Silver Bay would provide essential services like gas, groceries, and dining options. Its placement ensures an immersive outdoor experience while still maintaining reasonable access to modern conveniences.
SWC Campground, being a newer and well-thought-out facility, offers a selection of essential services designed to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience:
- Electric Hook-ups: All campsites are equipped with electric hook-ups, a significant amenity for RVers and those needing power for devices or comfort.
- Water Spigots: While there are "no water or sewer hook-ups" directly at each site, "water spigots are a short walk from every site," ensuring easy access to potable water.
- Clean Bathhouse: The campground features a "new updated shower building" and a main bathhouse.
- Clean Vault Toilets: In addition to the main bathhouse, "plenty of vault toilets in the campground itself," which are consistently described as "clean (and smell clean)," offering convenient access to restrooms from all sites.
- Spacious Sites: Sites are "spaced nicely," suggesting a good degree of personal space and privacy between camping units.
- Direct Trail Access: The campground provides direct access to the paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail, a major amenity for cyclists and walkers.
- Fire Pits and Picnic Tables: Standard amenities for a pleasant camping experience, allowing for outdoor cooking and dining.
SWC Campground distinguishes itself with several key features that contribute to a positive and memorable camping experience, particularly for those looking to explore the North Shore:
- New and Modern Facilities: Being a "newer campground" with a "new updated shower building" means visitors benefit from modern construction and fresh, clean amenities.
- All Sites with Electric Hook-ups: This is a significant convenience, ensuring power for RVs and electronic devices, a feature not always found at every campground, especially newer ones or those in natural settings.
- Immaculate Restrooms: The consistent praise for the cleanliness of both the main bathhouse and the numerous vault toilets ("clean and smell clean") is a major highlight, contributing significantly to guest comfort.
- Direct Access to Gitchi-Gami State Trail: This is arguably the biggest draw for active campers. Being able to "bike from your campsite up and down the north shore" without having to load up your bike and drive is an invaluable asset for cyclists and walkers.
- Spacious and Well-Spaced Sites: Sites are described as "spaced nicely" and unique, with some "on a small rock cliff," offering a good sense of privacy and interesting natural features. The "outer ring" sites are recommended for being "more spread out."
- Natural, Developing Environment: While the lack of mature trees means "you shouldn't plan on shade" currently, the "new campground" aspect means a fresh start. The natural setting, even without dense tree cover yet, contributes to the open and clean feel.
- Convenience for Exploring the North Shore: Although you "can't see the big lake from here," the trade-off is "nice facilities" and direct trail access, making it a perfect basecamp for daily excursions to Lake Superior's viewpoints, state parks, and charming towns.
- Thoughtful Layout: The presence of multiple vault toilets throughout the campground means that even with a bit of a walk to the main bathhouse, convenient restroom access is never far away.

This means less time driving and more time immersing oneself in the stunning scenery of Lake Superior's coastline. SWC Campground Reviews
This is a newer campground. All sites have electric hook-ups. As with the state park sites in Minnesota, no water or sewer hook-ups, but water spigots are a short walk from every site. As a new campground, you shouldn't plan on shade, as it will take a bit for any tree growth, but the sites are spaced nicely. It is a bit of a walk to the bathhouse but again there are plenty of vault toilets in the campground itself, and they are all clean (and smell clean). If you bike, it is on the Gichi Gammi trail so you bike from your campsite up and down the north shore. I enjoy camping here. The only downside is you can't see the big lake from here, but that's a small price to pay for the nice facilities.
