Swauk Campground Introduce
For Washingtonians seeking a straightforward, classic camping experience nestled within the grandeur of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Swauk Campground offers an ideal solution. This "pretty simple campground" provides a clean and authentic outdoor setting, perfect for those who appreciate the essentials of nature without excessive frills. It's a place where the towering Ponderosa pines and Western larches create a serene canopy, inviting campers to unwind and connect with the natural beauty that defines our state.
Swauk Campground serves as an excellent base for various outdoor activities, from tranquil hikes along a nearby stream to more extensive explorations of the surrounding forest trails. It’s particularly well-suited for individuals or small groups looking for a convenient overnight stop or a no-fuss camping trip. While it may not always be bustling with crowds, its relaxed atmosphere can be a significant draw for those seeking solitude. For Washington locals, Swauk Campground represents an accessible slice of wilderness, offering a refreshing break from daily routines and a chance to immerse oneself in the calming embrace of the Central Cascades.
Swauk Campground is located near Cle Elum, WA 98922, USA, placing it within the scenic Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Its exact position is notably "right off the highway," referring to US-97, just south of Blewett Pass. This strategic location makes it incredibly convenient for Washington residents traveling through the region, whether heading east or west across the Cascade Mountains.
For those journeying from the greater Seattle area, the drive typically involves taking I-90 East, then connecting to US-97 North towards Blewett Pass. The campground will be found shortly after turning onto US-97. From eastern Washington, travelers would head west on US-97. Its immediate proximity to the highway means easy access without lengthy detours down unpaved forest roads, which is a significant advantage for many campers, especially those in RVs or with trailers. While this convenience can lead to some ambient highway noise, as noted in reviews, particularly from trucks during early morning hours, it is often a worthwhile trade-off for the ease of access. The surrounding forest, with its large Ponderosa pines and Western larches, still provides a strong sense of natural immersion despite the nearby road. This accessibility makes Swauk Campground a practical choice for a quick overnight stop or a relaxed multi-day stay for Washington locals keen on exploring the Cle Elum and Blewett Pass areas.
Swauk Campground provides fundamental services typical of a classic Forest Service campground, focusing on essential amenities for a self-sufficient camping experience.
Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites, accommodating both tents and RVs. Each site typically includes a picnic area, though some information suggests a lack of picnic tables at certain spots, so it's wise to verify or come prepared.
Vault Toilets: Basic sanitation facilities are available in the form of vault toilets, located at various points within the campground and generally noted as clean by visitors.
Potable Water: Potable water is available, which is a significant convenience for campers. Some sources indicate running water might be found in a recreation area separate from the main campsites, so campers should be prepared to transport water to their site.
No Hook-ups: Importantly, Swauk Campground is a "dry camping" facility, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hook-ups available at the individual campsites. RV and trailer users should be self-contained.
First-Come, First-Served: The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis. This means sites cannot be reserved in advance; campers must physically arrive to claim an available spot. Payment is typically done via a deposit envelope system, which can be found at the entrance.
Fire Rings: Campsites generally come with fire rings, allowing for campfires when burn bans are not in effect. It is crucial to be aware of and adhere to any current fire restrictions, especially during dry seasons in Washington.
Pet-Friendly: As is common in many national forest campgrounds, Swauk is generally pet-friendly, though pets should always be kept on a leash and waste properly managed.
Swauk Campground, while "simple," boasts several features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for Washington locals seeking outdoor recreation.
Abundant Hiking Opportunities: The campground provides direct access to excellent hiking trails. The "Sculpture Rock loop trail begins and ends at the campground," offering a convenient option for exploration. Additionally, the Swauk Discovery Trail #1335, a loop trail with interpretive sites identifying tree and plant species, is located nearby, providing both short (almost 2 miles) and longer (over 2.5 miles) options with views of surrounding mountains. The area is also part of a larger trail network, including connections to the Pipe Creek and Blewett Pass Sno-Parks, catering to various hiking preferences.
Scenic Natural Setting: Nestled within a grove of "seriously friggin' huge Ponderosa pines and Western larches," the campground offers a beautiful forested environment. The presence of a "shallow Creek runs thru campground" adds to the serene ambiance and provides a refreshing spot for cooling off or for kids to play.
Winter Recreation Hub: During the winter months, Swauk Campground transforms into a Sno-Park. It offers an impressive "92 kilometers of marked un-groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails," with connectors to nearby Sno-Parks, making it a premier destination for winter outdoor enthusiasts.
Quiet and Uncrowded Atmosphere: Reviews indicate that the campground "doesn’t really fill up" and is often "quiet" at night, fostering a peaceful environment. This can be a significant advantage for those seeking solitude away from more bustling campgrounds.
Convenient Location: Being "right off the highway" (US-97) offers exceptional convenience for travelers, reducing the time spent on less developed roads and making it an easy stopover point.
Family-Friendly Space: Beyond the trails, the campground area itself often features a "play meadow," "horseshoe pits, ball feild, lots of room for kids to run and play or ride bikes," indicating a family-friendly design for active enjoyment.
Historic Charm: The presence of a "CCC era picnic shelter" adds a touch of historical interest and character to the campground.

Swauk Campground Reviews
Pretty simple campground but classic and clean. The place doesn’t really fill up, there was only one other camper the night we were there. The deposit envelope is pretty easy to figure out, albeit easy to evade as well. The campground is right off the highway which is convinient but was also a bit noisy around 4-5am when the trucks start screaming up and down the hills. Would recommend this site if you’re just looking for somewhere to pull over and sleep
