Summit Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow Montanans! Are you looking for your next outdoor adventure right here in our incredible state? Let's talk about Summit Campground, a fantastic and often overlooked gem located right on the doorstep of Glacier National Park. As locals, we understand the appeal of finding a clean, accessible, and affordable place to set up camp and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that surrounds us. Summit Campground offers just that: a no-frills, authentic camping experience perfect for those who prioritize exploring our majestic landscapes. We'll dive into what makes this National Forest campground a suitable choice for your next Montana getaway, from its prime location to its essential amenities, helping you prepare for a truly memorable experience.
Summit Campground embodies the rugged charm that defines much of Montana's outdoor recreation. It's a place where the fresh mountain air invigorates your senses and the towering trees provide a comforting canopy. While it's a National Forest campground, meaning it offers a more rustic experience compared to some private facilities, it consistently receives high marks for its cleanliness and overall maintenance. This commitment to upkeep ensures that even though you're roughing it a little, your environment remains welcoming and pristine. For many Montanans, this balance of wilderness feel and basic comfort is exactly what they seek for a genuine escape.
Choosing a campground is about more than just finding a spot; it's about finding a place that resonates with your vision of an ideal outdoor experience. Summit Campground caters to those who appreciate the simple pleasures of camping: gathering around a fire, gazing at the stars, and waking up to the sounds of nature – albeit with a unique Montanan twist, which we'll discuss. Its reputation for being well-maintained speaks volumes about the care put into preserving this space for public enjoyment. This dedication to cleanliness ensures that your focus can remain on the adventures that await you in the surrounding wilderness, rather than on the conditions of your campsite.
Summit Campground is strategically located at East Glacier Park, MT 59434, USA. This places it directly on the eastern side of Glacier National Park, making it an incredibly convenient base for exploring one of Montana's most iconic natural treasures. Its position means direct access to the park's scenic drives, hiking trails, and unparalleled vistas, saving you precious travel time and maximizing your opportunities for adventure. For Montanans, this accessibility is a significant advantage, allowing for spontaneous weekend trips or more extended stays without the hassle of long commutes to reach the heart of the wilderness.
While its proximity to the park is a major draw, it's important for local users to be aware of the campground's immediate surroundings. Summit Campground is situated very near a highway, and directly across that highway are active train tracks. This means that highway noise and, notably, the sounds of freight trains struggling up the hill to the summit are a regular occurrence. Reviews indicate that trains can pass by approximately every hour, and the noise can be quite loud, especially for those in tents. However, many campers find that after a full day of exploring Glacier National Park, they are tired enough that the noise doesn't significantly bother them. For those who are light sleepers, earplugs might be a helpful addition to your packing list.
Despite the ambient noise from the nearby transportation routes, the campground's location still provides an immersive natural experience. The breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains and forests remains paramount, offering stunning views and a sense of being truly "away from it all" once you settle into your site. The convenience of being so close to Glacier National Park often outweighs the noise consideration for many local adventurers, as it allows for unparalleled access to one of the most magnificent natural areas in our state.

Summit Campground is an excellent choice for Montanans for several key reasons, truly embodying the spirit of accessible outdoor adventure that we so value. Its primary appeal lies in its unbeatable proximity to Glacier National Park. For those of us living in Montana, having a clean, affordable, and well-maintained campground just a stone's throw from one of the world's most spectacular national parks is an incredible asset. This allows for easy day trips into the park, maximizing time spent on trails, enjoying scenic drives, or simply soaking in the breathtaking vistas, rather than enduring long commutes.
Furthermore, the affordability of Summit Campground makes it a particularly attractive option for local residents. In an era where outdoor recreation can sometimes come with a hefty price tag, finding an inexpensive national forest campground that doesn't compromise on cleanliness is a significant advantage. This budget-friendly aspect means that more Montanans can enjoy regular escapes into the wilderness, fostering a deeper connection with our state's natural heritage. It supports the idea that outdoor adventures should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget.
While the proximity to the highway and train tracks is a noted feature, it often becomes part of the unique Summit Campground experience. For many seasoned campers and those accustomed to the sounds of the wilderness, the rhythmic passing of freight trains can even add to the rustic charm, a reminder of the wild and untamed nature of our state. After a day of rigorous hiking or exploring in Glacier National Park, the sounds tend to fade into the background as tiredness takes over, and the comfort of a simple, clean campsite becomes paramount. The presence of mosquitoes is also a common factor in Montana's natural environments, and with proper repellent, it's easily managed, ensuring that your focus remains on the beauty around you.
In conclusion, Summit Campground offers Montanans a prime opportunity for an authentic and affordable camping experience right next to Glacier National Park. It’s a place where the emphasis is on the natural surroundings, the simplicity of outdoor living, and the unparalleled access to one of our state’s crown jewels. For those seeking to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with the wild heart of Montana, Summit Campground provides the perfect setting for creating lasting memories, making it an ideal destination for your next local adventure.

Summit Campground Reviews
The campground was very clean and well maintained and beautiful! The only thing that keeps it from being 5 stars is that it's very near the highway, and right across the highway is a train track, so with highway noise and train noise it tends to be a little loud.
Jul 26, 2019 · Laurie SchwabClean, inexpensive national forest campground. We had site 15, which was pretty close to the highwayLike other reviews mentioned, you can hear the freight trains struggling up the hill to the summit. They were just on the other side of the road and they seem to go by about every hour. It's pretty loud, especially in a tent, but it didn't bother us too much because we were really tired after a day at Glacier National Park There were a lot of mosquitos at our site. Be sure to bring repellent
Aug 17, 2018 · David RobertsNoisy. Next to highway and train tracks. Statue in pic is of a white man that saw a path made by Native Americans and decided to take it for the railroad. How many died. I Don't agree about taking down statues to erase history but if they're going to do it that's one statue that ought to go.
Aug 08, 2021 · Timothy FNice campground but the hosts DO NOT KEEP THE PIT TOILET CLEAN. Even after I called the Ranger Station. 1st time I ever seen such lazy hosts.. Fresh water sources running with no shut off just wasting 1000s of gallons of water.. SHAME
Aug 19, 2021 · Jeff SorgeThe trains run all night long and are loud as they struggle to push cars up over the mountain. Other than that, it's not bad at all, but can get quite chilly at night, even in summer.
