Sullivan Lake Campground Introduce
For Minnesotans yearning for a true escape into the embrace of the North Shore wilderness, Sullivan Lake Campground near Two Harbors, MN, offers an authentically rustic and serene camping experience. This isn't the place for full hookups or bustling recreational facilities; instead, Sullivan Lake Campground provides a "primitive" setting designed for campers who seek quietude, natural beauty, and a genuine disconnection from the everyday. With a limited number of sites perched near the lake, it promises an intimate and unforgettable connection with the great outdoors, inviting you to unplug and truly unwind.
Sullivan Lake Campground is known for its "first come, first serve" approach, embodying a classic camping spirit that emphasizes spontaneity and a go-with-the-flow attitude. It's a destination favored by those with tents or slide-in truck campers who appreciate the simplicity of a cleared area, a fire ring, and a picnic table. While it might lack some modern conveniences, its very rusticity is its charm. Visitors consistently praise its stunning beauty, particularly the lakeside sites, and the profound peace it offers. It’s a place where the sounds of nature, like grouse drumming, are your soundtrack, and where the absence of cell service becomes a cherished feature, encouraging deep relaxation and genuine connection with your surroundings.
Sullivan Lake Campground is located on Sullivan Road, Two Harbors, MN 55616, USA. This places it approximately 26 miles north of Two Harbors, deep within the scenic Finland State Forest area of Northeastern Minnesota. Its address on a less-traveled road hints at its secluded nature, ensuring a tranquil environment away from major highways and urban noise. The journey to the campground itself is part of the adventure, guiding you through the picturesque landscapes characteristic of Minnesota's renowned North Shore region.
Accessibility to Sullivan Lake Campground requires a bit of planning, primarily due to its rustic nature and location. To reach it from Two Harbors, you'll typically take County Road 2 north for about 26 miles, then turn left (west) onto County Road 15 for roughly half a mile, followed by another left (south) turn onto Sullivan Lake Road. While the roads leading to the campground are generally navigable, their rural nature means they might be narrower or less perfectly paved than main thoroughfares. Visitors with larger RVs should exercise caution, as some reviews suggest the road into the campground can be narrow, though slide-in truck campers have found it perfectly suitable. The remote setting contributes to the campground's quiet charm, but also means it's essential to arrive prepared with all your necessities, as amenities and stores are not immediately nearby. The drive from Two Harbors, while a bit lengthy, offers a gradual immersion into the forest, preparing you for the peaceful retreat that awaits at Sullivan Lake.
Sullivan Lake Campground provides the fundamental services essential for a rustic camping experience, focusing on basic needs rather than extensive modern amenities. This aligns with its primitive nature and caters to campers who are largely self-sufficient and enjoy a simpler approach to outdoor living.
Services Offered:
- Primitive Campsites: The campground features approximately a dozen cleared campsites, each equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, suitable for tent camping and smaller, self-contained units like slide-in truck campers.
- Drinking Water (Hand Pump): A hand pump is available, providing good-tasting drinking water. Campers should be prepared to pump and carry water to their sites.
- Vault Toilets: Basic vault toilets are available on-site, offering essential restroom facilities.
- Garbage Cans: Provided for waste disposal, though campers are always encouraged to minimize their waste and practice Leave No Trace principles.
- Boat Launch: The campground includes a boat launch for easy access to Sullivan Lake, ideal for canoes, kayaks, and small non-motorized boats. However, due to potentially low lake levels, usability for larger boats may vary.
- First-Come, First-Serve Basis: All sites operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. This allows for spontaneous trips but requires flexibility, especially during peak times.
- Payment Via Mail: Due to the lack of cell service, payment for campsites is typically handled via mail, with instructions provided at the campground.
The true highlights of Sullivan Lake Campground lie in its natural attributes and the unique, peaceful experience it offers to visitors. These features distinguish it from more developed campgrounds and appeal to a specific type of outdoor enthusiast.
Features / Highlights:
- Very Nice Lakeside Sites: Several campsites are "perched slightly up a slope from the lake," offering beautiful views and direct access to Sullivan Lake, creating a picturesque setting for your camp.
- Rustic and Secluded Atmosphere: With only about a dozen sites, the campground remains quiet and uncrowded, ensuring a high degree of privacy and a peaceful environment for relaxation and nature immersion.
- No Cell Service: This is a significant feature for those seeking a true digital detox. The lack of T-Mobile or Verizon service (and likely other providers) encourages campers to disconnect and fully enjoy their surroundings.
- Scenic Beauty: Even with fluctuating lake levels, the natural beauty of Sullivan Lake and the surrounding Finland State Forest remains stunning, providing a serene backdrop for outdoor activities.
- Opportunities for Water Activities: The lake is suitable for canoeing, kayaking, and potentially swimming (though low water levels might require walking further out on the beach).
- Wildlife Encounters: The natural setting provides opportunities to observe local wildlife, with turtles laying eggs being a recent observation, and the general presence of forest creatures.
- Ideal for Tent and Truck Campers: The rustic nature and site setup are particularly well-suited for traditional tent campers and those with more compact, self-contained truck campers.
- Proximity to North Shore Exploration: While secluded, its location north of Two Harbors makes it a good base for day trips to other North Shore attractions, including Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, and the charm of Two Harbors itself.

Sullivan Lake Campground Reviews
Several very nice lakeside sites perched slightly up a slope from the lake are among the selection of roughly a dozen sites at this campground. The lake level looked much lower than normal when we visited in July 2024. The lake was still usable if you walk further out on the beach, but the boat landing was not functional due to the seemingly low water level. We did not get T-Mobile or Verizon service anywhere we walked around in this campground. You may have better luck with other providers, otherwise plan for no cell service during your stay.Three other sites were occupied when we arrived on a Monday evening.A hand pump provided good tasting drinking water.
Jun 15, 2025 · Greg KruegerFirst come first serve, rustic, tent camping type location. We have a slide in truck camper so it also worked great for us.Had to pay via mail since we had no cell service. No electricity, water hookups, etc - but we didn’t need any of that. It was absolutely stunning, even with the lake low. Campsite #3 was a very cool setup. The bugs were definitely horrible, but they did eventually die down (& came back with a vengeance the next morning) - but it was tolerable with bug spray & and fire.We got caught in a couple rain storms - which only made the night even better in my opinion (I felt bad for the one other person there that was tent camping). There were plenty of turtles laying eggs and our dogs immediately found the mud (with the lake so low, do not recommended swimming).
Jul 09, 2024 · Rusted RoseThis is a little out-of-the-way. About 45 minutes from Gooseberry Falls about an hour from grand Marais. But totally worth it. It’s a gorgeous little lake, and there nobody else there it was a Tuesday but it’s definitely less crowded. Only tent camping here, but definitely do it if your tent camping it’s worth it to be in the middle of nowhere.!!
