Accessibility to Sugar Bay is straightforward. Visitors typically follow State Highway 169 to County Road 17, or Highway 2 to County Road 63 and then to County Road 17, following signs to the resort. The roads leading to the campground are generally well-maintained, ensuring a smooth journey for RVs and other vehicles. The resort's lakeside setting offers direct access to Pokegama Lake for water activities, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy being on or by the water.
Sugar Bay Campground Resort focuses on providing a clean, quiet, and comfortable RV camping experience with lake access. While not an exhaustive list, based on available public information and guest feedback, the resort generally offers the following services:
RV Campsites: The resort features 10 full RV hook-up campsites, including water, electric, and sewer connections. Many of these sites are pull-through accessible, accommodating big rigs. The sites are generally described as being in a "beautiful park-like setting."
Lake Access and Marina: Located directly on Pokegama Lake, the resort offers lake-level access, a sugar sand beach, and a marina. Gas is available for boats, making it convenient for those who bring their watercraft.
Designated for 55+ / Seniors: While exceptions may be made for quiet and respectful guests (as noted in one review), the resort is officially marketed as a "Quiet and Clean 55+ (Senior) RV park." This demographic focus contributes to the serene atmosphere.
Emphasis on Tranquility: The owners are noted for "keeping it a peaceful place to unwind because this is what they enjoy." This commitment translates into strict rules designed to maintain a quiet environment, which is a key "service" for those seeking calm.
Scenic Views: Guests can enjoy "fabulous lake views, sunrises and sunsets" from their campsites, enhancing the overall experience.
Seasonal Sites: Seasonal sites are available for those looking for a longer-term stay.
Basic Amenities: While not extensively detailed in all public sources, typical campground amenities like picnic tables, fire circles, and restrooms are generally expected at such a resort.
Sugar Bay Campground Resort stands out due to several distinct features and highlights, though prospective visitors should be aware of the resort's operational philosophy:
Unparalleled Quiet and Serenity: This is arguably the most significant highlight. Repeatedly described as "the most quiet and serene campsite we have ever stayed at," and a "peaceful place to unwind," Sugar Bay caters specifically to those who prioritize tranquility above all else. This makes it an ideal escape from loud, bustling family resorts.
Adult-Oriented Environment: The resort is primarily designated as a "55+ (Senior) RV park." While younger, quiet, and respectful guests may be "accepted" and even invited back, this demographic focus largely ensures a calm and mature atmosphere, free from the noise often associated with playgrounds or youth activities.
Beautiful Lakeside Location on Pokegama Lake: Situated directly on Pokegama Lake, guests benefit from stunning lake views, access to a sugar sand beach, and opportunities for boating, fishing, and enjoying sunsets and sunrises over the water. Pokegama Lake is a large and popular lake for recreation in the Grand Rapids area.
Strict Adherence to Rules for Tranquility: The owners' dedication to maintaining a "peaceful place" means strict adherence to property rules, including prohibitions on parking on grass and potentially other activities that might disrupt the quiet. While some visitors might find these rules rigid, they are central to the resort's promise of serenity. This rule enforcement, though sometimes seen as stern by a few, is precisely what ensures the quiet atmosphere cherished by many.
No PWCs or ATVs: A notable feature contributing to the quiet environment is the explicit prohibition of Personal Watercraft (PWCs/jet skis) and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). This significantly reduces noise pollution, appealing greatly to those seeking a truly calm lakeside experience.
Full RV Hookups and Big Rig Friendly: With 10 full hookup sites (water, electric, sewer), including pull-through options, the resort is well-equipped for various sizes of RVs, providing convenience for a comfortable stay.
Proximity to Grand Rapids Amenities: While offering a secluded feel, the resort is just a short drive from Grand Rapids, allowing easy access to shops, restaurants, and other services without compromising the peaceful lakeside setting.

Sugar Bay Campground Resort Reviews
For a couple of single gals in their 40s, this was the most quiet and serene campsite we have ever stayed at. As some of the reviews are negative about how the owners feel about their property, we relished in the fact they are keeping it a peaceful place to unwind because this is what they enjoy. They were nothing but kind to us. They accepted us, even though we weren't seniors, and even invited us back as we were quiet and respectful. This is a great place for those that want to get away from the chaos of family resorts and just enjoy a quiet week/weekend. We are definitely going back!
Sep 09, 2024 · Amy StockingerWe paid to stay at campground for two nights. Sunday evening we had a camper pull in the spot next to us and they parked the van on the grass and blocked our view. The next morning we went to meet an aunt and cousin from Florida for breakfast in Grand Rapids and they wanted to see our camper and the campground. So they followed us back and weren't staying long. When they pulled in the lady yelled to get off the grass no parking on grass. I told her they were moving it right away. I mentioned about the van next to us all night and morning on grass and she said they are not here now. So they came in and checked out the camper and we sat and visited The guy came and said you have to leave and our aunt said that was rude. He said if you don't like it just take the camper and get out. The cousin said they were leaving and he just kept on. So we went into town and when we came back the owner brought a camper down and they pulled in and parked there 3500 pickup on the grass overnight and it rained most of the night so that big pickup could park on grass and the little toyota camry couldn't and it was dry. Just saying won't camp at this place anymore.
Jul 30, 2024 · Leona BowmanHEADS UP NO VISITORS ALLOWED!!! We were told to leave and that visitors were not allowed. Thats crazy we had all came from distant places to see each other. My 81 year old mom and I just stopped by to see my 2 cousins and talk for a few minutes before heading out. We we're yelled at and rudely confronted about our mere presence at 10:00 A.M. by a very very rude couple.
Jul 30, 2024 · Annette HendersonThis IS the nicest campground I’ve stayed at, and I’ve seen plenty. You have sunrise and sunset, clear water, loons serenading you, day and night.Lifetime of tlc was put into this piece of heaven. The host were so helpful, kind. Thanks so much for a great stay🙏
Aug 18, 2024 · Curt IversonThese people don’t deserve 1 star! They are the most rude couple I have ever met in my entire life. My husband and I live in the Sugar Lake area, and stopped by to inquire about a stay for a family member who’s coming to town that wanted to stay closer to our home, and before we could even pull in the driveway on our 4-wheeler the old crabby, miserable woman was barking at us to leave! We kindly explained that we were inquiring about a potential stay. They told us to leave and to never come back. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I have never been treated so poorly by a business owner! Quite frankly I am appalled at their behavior. If you want a pleasant stay somewhere - this isn’t the place. These people are RUDE!!!
