We understand that finding the ideal camping spot in Oregon involves balancing rustic charm with essential conveniences and unique recreational opportunities. Sand Island stands out for its exceptional island setting, its friendly and helpful staff, and the distinct sense of adventure that comes with a boat-access-only campground. This overview aims to provide a comprehensive look at what makes St. Helens - Sand Island Camp Ground a suitable and incredibly enjoyable choice for your next outdoor escape in Oregon.
St. Helens - Sand Island Camp Ground is located at 134 River St, St Helens, OR 97051, USA. This address refers to the St. Helens Marina, which serves as the mainland access point and shuttle service for the campground on Sand Island itself. The island is situated in the middle of the Columbia River, just downstream of the confluence of the Multnomah Channel and the Columbia River.
The accessibility of Sand Island Camp Ground is a key part of its unique charm. Being an island campground, it is accessible only by boat or kayak. However, for those without their own watercraft, a significant convenience is the complimentary boat shuttle service provided by the campground. Upon arrival at the St. Helens Marina (134 River St), campers check in, unload their gear, and a courtesy shuttle takes them to the parking lot for their vehicle. They are then brought back to the marina, and a quick, approximately 3-minute boat ride ferries them and their belongings directly to the island. Once on the island, staff are often available with a "speedy people mover" to help transport gear directly to your campsite, making the "boat-in" aspect surprisingly hassle-free.
This island location provides a wonderful sense of escape, making it feel like you have the island almost to yourselves, especially during off-peak times. Despite being an island, it's remarkably close to mainland amenities. St. Helens is just a few minutes away by shuttle, offering access to grocery stores, restaurants, and other services. Furthermore, the campground is strategically located approximately 25-35 minutes from downtown Portland, Oregon, and Longview, Washington, making it a highly accessible and convenient getaway for locals across the broader region. The quiet passing of large commercial ships on the Columbia River adds to the unique maritime atmosphere without being overly disruptive.

St. Helens - Sand Island Camp Ground Reviews
This was my first time camping with my hubby who LOVES camping.. this place was awesome! Andrew was exceptional! There weren’t a lot of people there so he gave us an option to move to another campsite away from a big party of people. We said we needed trees for two hammocks and he picked the absolute PERFECT spot! The island has spread out bathrooms, but no running water so bring lots of water! You can buy wood at the island and they bring it right to your campsite which is awesome. We had a picnic table and a fire pit in our campsite and the area was clean and beautiful.Husband had a great time fishing off the beach and I had great cell reception to watch a movie in my hammock! The staff was above and beyond friendly and helpful. It was fun to watch the boats go by (quieter than I thought they’d be) and there was lots of wildlife to watch as well as some really cool wood carving hiding around the island. We 100% recommend this place and will be back for sure ☺️
May 27, 2024 · Kizzie LokanWas a great experience! Staff was incredibly helpful and responsive. Quick pick up at the dock, 3 minute boat ride and quick ride with all your stuff to the camp ground. We went in mid April and only had a few other groups on the island. It felt like we had the island to ourselves! Beautiful campgrounds, super fun disk golf course and a bunch of great amenities. Would definitely stay again and recommend the island for others!
Apr 22, 2025 · Nick HerringtonMy family Absolutely LOVES Sand Island!! It's an experience all its own. From the free shuttle to and from the parking lot, to the complementary boat ride to and from the island to transport you and your things or just to go back to the mainland for something and come back. The staff is amazing and very friendly as well. There's no electricity or cars. However it's right in St. Helens, so there is cell phone reception, if you must. Also, can't forget, every site has a campfire pit, which is my family's must have! Plus, you're surrounded by the Columbia River, and they have games & activities you can borrow. They also have firewood for purchase, which they deliver right to your site! Such an Enjoyable experience!! 🔥🏕️😁😎
Jul 05, 2024 · Joe LeemanAndrew and his wife are the very best camp hosts, very fun and friendly place yo stay
May 19, 2025 · Tonya PortisThis place is amazing! Andrew and Becky are the people who run this place and they are the sweetest people you will ever meet. There are bathrooms on the island but no running water. However if you call between 8AM and 8PM you can get a ride to either the boat launch, fuel dock, the town square dock, or back to the island. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ All the way.*Update 6-20-22*Went back for the weekend and even though the weather was not great and the island was flooded we still had a great weekend. If you are on the fence about this place just give it a shot and you will love it. 👍🏻
