Sprague Creek Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow Montanans! If you’re dreaming of a quintessential Glacier National Park experience, one that combines the tranquility of lakeside camping with convenient access to the park's most iconic features, then look no further than Sprague Creek Campground. Nestled on the scenic shores of Lake McDonald, this campground offers a peaceful and idyllic setting, perfect for those who prefer to sleep under the stars in a tent, surrounded by the stunning beauty of our beloved Big Sky Country. It’s a favorite among locals for its serene atmosphere and unparalleled access to the park’s natural wonders.
Sprague Creek Campground is a smaller, intimate campground that provides an authentic Glacier experience. Unlike some larger, more bustling campgrounds, Sprague Creek maintains a quiet charm, making it an excellent choice for individuals, couples, or small families seeking a peaceful retreat. While it's conveniently located near the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, offering easy access to hiking and scenic drives, it still manages to feel like a secluded haven. This article is crafted with you, our local community, in mind, providing a detailed overview of what makes Sprague Creek Campground a standout option for your next memorable adventure in Glacier National Park.
Sprague Creek Campground is strategically located within Glacier National Park, approximately ten miles from the West Glacier entrance, at West Glacier, MT 59936, USA. Its prime position on the northeast shore of Lake McDonald is a significant draw, offering breathtaking views and direct access to the lake. The campground is situated between the majestic Lake McDonald and the world-famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. This means that while you enjoy the beauty of the lake, you will also hear some road traffic, particularly during peak hours, but the convenience of its location for exploring the park more than makes up for it. Accessing Sprague Creek is relatively straightforward once you enter Glacier National Park through the West Entrance. It's about a mile south of the historic Lake McDonald Lodge, making it easy to access lodge amenities if needed. As a reminder for those planning a visit during peak season (typically late May through mid-September), timed entry vehicle reservations are now required for the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road, including access to Sprague Creek Campground, between 7 am and 3 pm. However, having a campground reservation within the required area (like at Sprague Creek) often serves as your vehicle entry permit, so be sure to check the latest park regulations on Recreation.gov.
Sprague Creek Campground provides essential services designed for a comfortable tent-camping experience, focusing on basic amenities that enhance your connection with nature.

Sprague Creek Campground Reviews
Peaceful campground on beautiful Lake McDonald. The camp host was amazing and super knowledgeable. Tent camping only here. Running water in the restrooms. Serene campground about ten miles from the west side entrance Going to the Sun Road. Loved it!
Jul 05, 2024 · Summer SunflowerGreat little campground in Glacier National Park. It is about a mile south of Lake McDonald Lodge and situated between Going To The Sun Road and Lake McDonald so you do hear the road traffic but you have amazing views of Lake McDonald and access to the lake. The bathrooms are clean and there is potable water. The campsites are nice, some better than others. The other half of the campground is a picnic area. It has a couple of kayak/canoe/sup launch sites. Overall a very laid back and quiet campground. And the camp host, Jane, is very friendly, helpful and wonderful. So far it is my favorite campground in Glacier!
Jun 12, 2023 · Lynda Andros-ClaySmall campground next to Lake McDonald. You will have quite a bit of road noise and the bear boxes are awkwardly spaced, making it feel like you are in a neighbor's spot and using their box. Lots of shade and a trail down to the lake for easy access.
Aug 06, 2023 · Jackie DA nice site that is well kept and clean. There are dedicated car camping sites ($20/night) that are ALL first-come first-serve, so make sure to come super early to secure your site! There are also 3 sites dedicated to those without vehicles (bicyclists/hikers) and those are only $5/night.This is right on the edge of Lake McDonald which is a nice cool temperature, and there are dedicated bathrooms and portable water pumps. Furthermore since there are no electricity hookups and no areas for RVs, then it's also nice and quiet!
Sep 07, 2019 · EricThe Sprague Creek campsite where we stayed gave us privacy and great views of Lake McDonald. It’s just a short drive north of the visitor center and is unique in that it does not offer RV access which provides more peace and quiet. If you plan on staying there during the summer months you need to arrive early to ensure you find a spot. On the campground website they will list when the campgrounds fill each day which is helpful. This site along with others is based on a first come first served basis only so be sure to plan ahead and arrive early to get a good campsite. This location also offers a nice private beach behind the campsites which is a great spot to look at the sunset across Lake McDonald. Since it still sits on the lake it also makes it convenient to get around since it is close to several attractions!- @wanderingwithustwo
