South Summit Lake Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow Californians! Are you seeking a peaceful escape into the heart of one of our state's most unique and geologically fascinating national parks? Look no further than South Summit Lake Campground, a truly serene and welcoming destination nestled within Lassen Volcanic National Park. This article is crafted with you, the local Californian, in mind, to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of what makes South Summit Lake Campground an exceptional choice for your next outdoor adventure. If you appreciate quiet natural beauty, spacious campsites, and breathtaking night skies, this campground is a must-visit in your home state.
South Summit Lake Campground offers a quintessential national park camping experience, but with a distinct advantage: a quieter atmosphere compared to its northern counterpart. Nestled within a "quiet pine forest," it provides a calm and tranquil setting, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. Guests consistently praise its thoughtful layout, particularly in the D loop, which offers spacious sites, including options suitable for "multiple families." The campground's proximity to Summit Lake, just a "short walk to the lake," adds to its appeal, providing easy access to water-based recreation and scenic views. Our goal is to provide you with all the essential information to plan your visit, ensuring you make the most of what this remarkable California campground has to offer.
South Summit Lake Campground is strategically located at 42700 Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway, Mineral, CA 96063, USA. This address places it directly within Lassen Volcanic National Park, a significant advantage for campers eager to explore the park's unique geothermal features, volcanic landscapes, and extensive trail system. The campground is situated on the south end of Summit Lake, approximately 13 miles north of the park's southwest entrance (near Mineral) and 17 miles south of the north entrance (near Manzanita Lake).
Access to the campground is directly off Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway (Highway 89), a well-maintained paved road that traverses the park. This ensures easy and smooth access for all types of vehicles, including RVs and those pulling trailers. While the park highway is generally open from late spring to late fall, opening dates are highly dependent on snowmelt, and it is crucial for visitors to check the National Park Service website for current road conditions and opening/closing dates before planning their trip. The elevation of South Summit Lake Campground is approximately 6,700 feet, which contributes to its refreshing mountain air and provides cooler temperatures, especially at night. This elevation also means the campground offers stunning views of the surrounding volcanic peaks and forested landscapes. Given its location within a national park, there is typically no cell service within the campground itself, though limited service may be found at higher elevations or near park visitor centers. This encourages a true digital detox, allowing for full immersion in nature.

- No Hookups: As a national park campground, South Summit Lake does not offer RV hookups (electric, water, sewer) at individual sites.

Sep 24, 2023 · Manning SuttonVery nice campground sitting in the quiet pine forest. The only down side is that it only features vault toilets.
Sep 03, 2024 · Bo LuanBeautiful surroundings, went for many walks around the area. Definitely be back. The animals in the campground are persistent, the will go in the firepit, bear locker, on the table, in your car. Be sure to keep things shut and closed.
Jul 31, 2022 · Deana DoyleWent in Sept. 2024. No water at spout until next spring 2025. Only pit toilets, so no shower. TIP: don’t book site or any site near E13 bc you’ll for sure get a whiff of the toilet waste 💩😭 (don’t book even across the way). Other than that, nice campground with trees for shade, and bear boxes for your shtuff. Would book again! 🙂
Sep 23, 2024 · WendyThe campsite was very easy to find and the latrines were extremely Clean and smells nice. They provided toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The reservation was a low cost of $22 a night and parking was $25 for the entire time. Only 3 tents and 2 cars allowed per site (extra cars will be parked off your site which was within walking distance). The view to see the stars was the best I've ever seen and at night, you can take a reflecting pond shot of the stars and mountains all at once. Photo credited to Brian Fulda @brianfulda Instagram
