South Fork Family Campground Introduce
For Californians looking to trade the bustle of city life for the serene embrace of the mountains, South Fork Family Campground in Angelus Oaks presents an ideal seasonal escape. Nestled within the picturesque San Bernardino National Forest, this campground offers a classic Southern California mountain camping experience, complete with towering trees, the soothing sound of trickling creeks, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place where families can reconnect with nature, children can explore the outdoors, and everyone can unwind amidst beautiful scenery. As a seasonal, first-come, first-served site, it offers that authentic, spontaneous camping adventure many locals cherish.
South Fork Family Campground is widely regarded as one of the better camping options in its area, drawing visitors back season after season. Its appeal lies in its straightforward approach to camping combined with the natural beauty that surrounds it. The campground operates seasonally, typically from May 6th to September 24th, aligning perfectly with the warmer months when mountain getaways are most desirable. With approximately 30 campsites, it provides a balance between having enough space for visitors and maintaining a more intimate, less overwhelmingly crowded feel. The natural setting is a consistent highlight; campers appreciate the small creeks running through the grounds, which add a tranquil backdrop to their stay. One particularly charming feature noted by a past visitor is a specific campsite with a "tiny tributary trickling through it," perfect for hanging a hammock and truly relaxing. While the restrooms have been described as a "stinky honey hole," their availability, along with water spigots and individual fire pits, ensures basic comforts are met for a genuine outdoor experience. The abundant shade from the trees and the availability of picnic tables at each site further enhance the comfort of this beautiful mountain retreat.
South Fork Family Campground is conveniently situated at 44698 CA-38, Angelus Oaks, CA 92305, USA. This address places it directly along California State Route 38, a scenic highway that traverses the San Bernardino National Forest. Angelus Oaks itself is a small, charming mountain community that serves as a gateway to numerous outdoor recreational opportunities within the forest. The campground's location on CA-38 means it is easily accessible by car, making it a popular choice for residents across Southern California seeking a relatively short drive to a true mountain escape.
Accessibility to South Fork Family Campground is straightforward via CA-38. This state highway is generally well-maintained, providing a smooth journey through the forest. As with any mountain road, drivers should be mindful of winding sections and potential wildlife crossings, but overall, it's a very manageable drive for standard passenger vehicles. The proximity to the highway means "you can hear the road traffic" from some spots, but the general ambiance is still one of mountain tranquility, especially with the sounds of the creeks. Parking at the campground varies; while most spots are described as "smaller," accommodating only standard vehicles, there are "only a couple" that can fit trailers, indicating that RV or large trailer camping might be limited. Given its first-come, first-served policy, arriving earlier in the day or on weekdays during the season is advisable to secure a spot, especially if you have a larger vehicle or specific site preferences. The ease of access makes it an ideal spot for spontaneous weekend trips or longer, planned getaways for California locals.

South Fork Family Campground Reviews
One of my favorite areas. Seasonal! 5/6 to 9/24. $26/night + $8 for each additional car. To the best of my memory: ~30 campsites, first come first serve, One of the camp spots has a tiny tributary trickling through it I like to hang my hammock over! There are restrooms(stinky honey hole), a water spicket(by the restroom) fire pit for each camp. Pix are from across hwy.
May 15, 2022 · GinaOne of the better camp grounds in the area. 6 total (3 buildings) bathrooms on the grounds. Small creeks running through. Plenty for the kids to do as far as staying occupied. Beautiful scenery. Most parking spots are smaller, only a couple can fit trailers. Fire rings, tent pads, lots of shade & picnic tables.
Aug 15, 2020 · Brandon ReillyIt was clean, the campsites were pretty spacious, very little amount of bugs. It was a bit weird the only animals I saw were bugs and birds, not even squirrels. A good amount of plant life around but not that diverse. There are firepits which is a nice thing to have and there are currently no restrictions on using it you just need a fire permit.
