My family and I went to Sunset Beach for my birthday getaway. We we're thoroughly impressed. Great location, really beautiful campground. The biggest negative was the raccoons are out of control. Put your stuff away and secure. The boxes provided are not enough. I wedged, firewood against the box doors to keep them out and that worked. Otherwise, they can crack them open and reach in and get what is accessible. Yes they got about 50% of are food. But we still had a great time. We laughed our butts off, and there are truly bigger problems in life. We highly recommend Sunset State Beach. We left with great memories. - Gregory Golie

Introduction / Overview

For California locals seeking an authentic and memorable coastal camping experience, South Campground, nestled within the beautiful Sunset State Beach near Watsonville, offers a truly unique getaway. This popular campground provides a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural splendor of the Monterey Bay area, with direct access to a wide, sandy beach renowned for its stunning sunsets and ocean breezes. It’s a place where the rhythmic sound of waves provides a constant backdrop, inviting relaxation and adventure in equal measure.

As one delighted family shared, after a "birthday getaway" at Sunset Beach, they were "thoroughly impressed. Great location, really beautiful campground." This sentiment is widely echoed among visitors who appreciate the campground's picturesque setting and convenient access to the beach. While the campground offers a beautiful natural environment, it’s important to be prepared for the realities of coastal wildlife, particularly raccoons, which are noted to be "out of control" by one reviewer. This highlights the need for vigilant food storage and security, reinforcing the message that while nature is beautiful, it also requires respectful engagement. Despite these minor challenges, the overarching theme from reviews is one of enjoyment and the creation of "great memories."

South Campground caters to both tent and RV campers, providing a versatile option for various outdoor enthusiasts. It’s part of the larger Sunset State Beach park, which is managed by California State Parks, ensuring a level of care and maintenance. For Californians looking for a quintessential beach camping experience on the Central Coast, complete with the invigorating scent of the ocean and breathtaking views, South Campground at Sunset State Beach is an excellent choice, promising a refreshing escape from the everyday.

Location and Accessibility

South Campground is located within Sunset State Beach at Watsonville, CA 95076, USA. This prime coastal location places it on the northern Monterey Bay, offering Californians convenient access to one of the state's most beloved stretches of coastline. Watsonville itself is a vibrant agricultural community, providing essential services and supplies just a short drive from the campground.

Access to Sunset State Beach and its campgrounds is typically straightforward, involving well-maintained roads from nearby Highway 1. From the main park entrance, clear signage guides visitors to the South Campground area. The campground’s design allows for relatively easy maneuvering for both RVs and vehicles towing trailers, as well as designated areas for tent camping. While the campground is "near the coast," it's crucial for visitors to note, as a reviewer pointed out, that "you can’t actually see the ocean from the campsites themselves. The beach is a short walk away, but the dunes and vegetation block any direct view from the campground." This means campers can easily access the beach for ocean views and activities, but the campsites themselves offer a sheltered, more private environment nestled behind the protective dunes.

The proximity to the ocean brings specific environmental considerations, as highlighted by reviewers: "It can get quite warm during the day, but temperatures drop significantly after sunset—pack layers! Because the campground is so close to the ocean, the humidity and water vapor can build up inside your tent overnight. I recommend using a ground tarp and a rainfly with good ventilation to minimize dampness." Being prepared for these coastal temperature swings and humidity is key to a comfortable stay. Despite these quirks, the convenient location and direct beach access make South Campground a highly desirable spot for California locals seeking a genuine beach camping adventure.

Services Offered

  • Campsites: South Campground offers both tent and RV campsites. These sites are typically equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for campfires (subject to current fire restrictions).
  • Restrooms: Functional restrooms are available. However, a reviewer noted that they are "passable—functional but definitely showing their age. Some renovation would go a long way to improve the overall experience."
  • Pay Showers: Showers are available, but require payment. As a reviewer explicitly stated, "Taking a shower requires quarters." Campers should bring an ample supply of quarters if they plan to use the showers regularly.
  • Food Storage Boxes: The campground provides metal food storage boxes at each site, designed to protect food from wildlife. However, it's important to note a reviewer's caution that "the boxes provided are not enough. I wedged firewood against the box doors to keep them out and that worked. Otherwise, they can crack them open and reach in and get what is accessible." This highlights the need for extra vigilance against raccoons.
  • Water Spigots: Water spigots are typically available for potable water, though visitors are always advised to bring their own supply or confirm availability, especially in drought-prone California.
  • Camp Host: A camp host is usually on-site, providing assistance and ensuring adherence to campground rules.
  • Trash Disposal: Designated trash receptacles are available for waste disposal.
  • Visitor Center/Park Office: While not directly at the campground, a visitor center or park office within Sunset State Beach provides maps, information, and emergency assistance.

Features / Highlights

  • Direct Beach Access: The most prominent highlight is the campground’s convenient and short walking distance to the beautiful, expansive sandy beach of Sunset State Beach, perfect for strolling, sunbathing, and enjoying sunsets.

  • Wildlife Encounters: The presence of diverse wildlife, including "squirrels everywhere" and notable raccoon activity, makes for an engaging natural experience. Visitors should be prepared for proper food storage and wildlife observation.
