This network of locations, including Son's River Ranch, Son's Blue River Camp, Son's Rio Cibolo, and Son's Geronimo, collectively provides a diverse range of camping, glamping, and day-use options centered around the beautiful Texas waterways.
Son's Island Getaways is renowned for its innovative approach to outdoor recreation, transforming traditional camping into a luxurious and convenient experience. These properties are designed for making memories, whether you're tubing down a clear river, kayaking on a serene lake, or simply unwinding with family and friends. While there might be ongoing construction at some locations as they continually enhance their offerings, the commitment to providing amazing service and an enjoyable environment for people of all ages remains at the forefront of the Son's Getaways philosophy.
Son's Island Getaways (the original location) is specifically addressed at 9301 FM725, McQueeney, TX 78123, USA. This places it directly on Lake McQueeney, part of the Guadalupe River basin, offering a beautiful lakeside setting. McQueeney is a small, charming community located between San Antonio and Austin, making it an incredibly accessible getaway for Texans from both major metropolitan areas. It's approximately an hour's drive from San Antonio and about an hour and a half from Austin, depending on traffic.
The broader collection of Son's Getaways properties extends across the region, including locations on the San Marcos River (Son's River Ranch, Son's Blue River Camp), the Rio Cibolo (Son's Rio Cibolo), and Geronimo Creek (Son's Geronimo). This network ensures that Texans have multiple options to experience the unique "Son's" style of outdoor recreation, each with its own specific charm and river/creek access. All properties are situated to provide easy access from major highways, ensuring a smooth journey for campers. The proximity to popular Texas Hill Country towns like New Braunfels and Seguin means that guests are never far from additional dining, shopping, and entertainment options, making these locations ideal for both serene escapes and active vacations.
Son's Island Getaways and its sister properties offer a wide array of services designed to maximize comfort and enjoyment for all visitors:
Cabana Rentals: A hallmark of Son's Getaways, these Hawaiian-style, thatched-roof cabanas are available for day-use or evening rentals. They typically include comfortable seating, a picnic table, BBQ pit, hammock, and often electricity and running water, providing a private and shaded base for relaxation.
Glamping Cabins/Tents: For overnight stays with elevated comfort, Son's offers fully furnished glamping cabins or tents. These often come with comfortable beds (e.g., queen-sized foam mattresses), air conditioning/heating, kitchenettes with mini-fridges and coffee makers, and private outdoor amenities like fire pits and hammocks. Some even feature full bathrooms and smart TVs.
Traditional Tent Camping: At properties like Son's River Ranch, traditional "bring your own tent" camping spots are available, allowing for a more classic camping experience by the river.
Watercraft Rentals and Shuttles: A key feature across the properties is easy access to water activities. Guests can rent tubes, kayaks, and paddleboards, with convenient shuttle services often provided to facilitate floats down the San Marcos or Guadalupe Rivers back to their camp/cabana.
Family-Friendly Activities: The properties are designed for all ages, offering amenities like beach volleyball courts, swimming areas, fishing opportunities, and communal fire pits for s'mores and stargazing.
On-site Facilities: Guests can expect clean restroom facilities (e.g., individual lockable bathrooms with hot water showers at Son's Blue River Camp), and often dedicated parking.
Event Hosting: With spacious areas and a variety of accommodations, Son's Getaways properties are well-suited for hosting groups, family reunions, and even private events.
Live Music: Son's Blue River Camp, a sister property, occasionally hosts live music events, adding to the entertainment options.
Son's Island Getaways and its associated properties stand out for several remarkable features:
Unique Island/Lakeside Setting (Son's Island): The original Son's Island offers a truly unique "island" experience on Lake McQueeney, a rarity in Texas. While currently under redevelopment, its past offerings of private docks and exclusive cabanas created a feeling of a personal paradise.
Luxury Glamping: The emphasis on comfortable glamping cabins with amenities like air conditioning and kitchenettes significantly elevates the camping experience, making it appealing even to those who prefer "glamorous camping" over traditional roughing it.
Diverse River Access: With properties on the San Marcos River, Rio Cibolo, and Geronimo Creek, Son's Getaways offers varied riverfront experiences, from tubing and kayaking on popular stretches to more serene creek-side relaxation.
All-Inclusive Hassle-Free Options: Some camping packages, particularly for glamping tents, include pre-setups with beds and essentials, minimizing the effort for campers and maximizing immediate enjoyment.
Family and Group Friendly: The combination of spacious sites, diverse activities, and a focus on comfort makes these properties ideal for family vacations, celebrations, and group gatherings, as highlighted by glowing customer reviews.
Amazing Service: Repeatedly praised in reviews, the "amazing service" from staff members, like those at Blue River Camp, ensures a positive and welcoming experience for guests.
Ongoing Enhancements: While some properties, like the original Son's Island, may experience temporary construction or redevelopments, this indicates a commitment to continuous improvement and providing an even better experience for future visitors.
Picturesque Scenery: All locations are set in beautiful natural surroundings, offering opportunities to enjoy "amazing scenery," from lush riverbanks to expansive Texas skies perfect for stargazing.

Jul 29, 2021 · Melissa WashGot to love this place they have multiple properties and amazing service. Most recently visited Blue River camp and had a great time with the family shout out to all the guys and gal's working there.
Oct 13, 2021 · Mauricio MoraThe weekend we went it rained and although the terms say they do rain checks it’s up to the discretion of Sons if they will allow the rain check. In my case they did not since it would stop later that afternoon. Bummer. The employees are nice. The tent itself was nice, and spacious. We stayed at the safari cabins because the bird house cabins were booked. The safari cabins do not have inside restrooms. I did not enjoy the small showers/restroom outside of the tents for use. For one the size, two the water gets cold while showering, and there is constantly water on the floor which is right next to the toilet so your not sure if it’s water or pee! The kayaking, paddle boarding and cabanas are nice a there is enough for use since it was not packed due to the weather. The pools are clean but they are not heated as advertised not even the hot tubs. They have four hot tubs and only one was hot. The kids didn’t care an enjoyed it anyway. The game room could use some updating. The pool table is broken and there is not much else in there. Over all it was nice, with lots to do if you like outdoors. I would go back for the price but I would plan in the summer vs spring! Oh an I would book the bird cabin.
Mar 20, 2024 · Karla cervantesMy family and I will no longer be staying with any son’s island locations. We have had a variety of issues during our stays. Lack of cleanliness, the bathrooms have no A/C and either had freezing cold water or extremely hot water, most of the bathroom doors do not latch, we had a rat come into our tent and eat through some of our food (we have a video of it), we had ants in one of our beds, rusted utensils, they allowed neighboring campers to play loud karaoke through the night. Despite all of those issues we tried to look past and give it a shot at another location in their waterfront cabins. Our final straw was with our upcoming stay. The reservation department is extremely unaccommodating and unprofessional. We have a large group staying. Half the group is arriving on Sunday. We are arriving Monday. We asked if it was possible for us to arrive an hour early after our long drive so we could have lunch with our family at their picnic table while we wait for the 3:30 check in for our cabin. We were told that we could only arrive onsite an hour early if we paid a $20/person fee. So $120 fee for an hour early. We already paid over $700 for our 2 night stay. I understand they have policies in place, but when I asked for a supervisor to give feedback on our experiences the reservations manager, Kiana, refused to give me her supervisor’s information. She then proceeded to put words into my mouth. She stated “we have policies that I have to follow and your just upset they don’t suit your needs. You just want special treatment”and I started to say “I respect that, but I would still like to speak with upper management so I can give my feedback”, but she cut me off and said “but you just don’t care” and hung up on me. It was extremely unprofessional. I am looking forward to a conversation with upper management in regards to our experience.
