# 13 Olympic National Park06/15-20 Sol Duc Campground -Site 4 Hike-inThrilled we were able to swap out site 36 which was right by the entrance across from registration, the dishwashing station and bathrooms. Our excellent camp host recommended site 4 and despite the inconvenience of moving to a hike-in spot, it has been well worth it. It feels like you’re the only people around. You not only hear the creek, but you see it, and there’s plenty of room for a six person tent with a 10x6 vestibule and another smaller (10’x10’ tent) within a reasonable distance on same campsite. No critters other than birds to enjoy. - Alice Madsen

Location and Accessibility

Sol Duc Campground is ideally situated at 12076 Sol Duc Hot Spgs Rd, Port Angeles, WA 98363, USA, deep within the Sol Duc Valley of Olympic National Park. Access to the campground typically involves driving along US Highway 101, then turning onto Sol Duc Road, which leads directly into the valley and to the campground. The drive itself is incredibly scenic, winding through dense forest, setting the tone for the immersive natural experience that awaits.

While it feels wonderfully secluded, Sol Duc Campground is remarkably accessible from various parts of Washington. From cities like Seattle or Tacoma, the journey involves a ferry ride or a longer drive around the Olympic Peninsula, culminating in a memorable ascent into the park. The road leading to the campground is paved and well-maintained during its operational season (typically mid-April through October), though visitors should always check the National Park Service website for current road conditions, especially during the shoulder seasons when snow or weather closures can occur. Its proximity to Port Angeles (approximately an hour's drive) means that essentials can be found there, though a small convenience store is also available at the nearby Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate, perfect for cooking and enjoying a campfire, provided fire restrictions are not in place.

Features / Highlights
  • Access to Sol Duc Hot Springs: A major draw is the campground's immediate proximity to the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. While some find the hot springs themselves a "smelly crowded hot tub," others enjoy the opportunity to soak and relax in the natural mineral pools after a day of exploring. This unique feature adds a layer of relaxation to the camping experience.
  • Central Location for Park Exploration: Sol Duc Campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring some of Olympic National Park's most iconic areas. Reviewers highlight its "perfect starting point for hikes at Crescent Lake, Hoh Rainforest, Hurricane Ridge, and closer by Lovers Lane and Sol Duc Falls." While some of these destinations require a drive, being centrally located minimizes travel time within the vast park.
  • Direct Trail Access: The campground offers direct access to a network of popular hiking trails. The "Lovers Lane Loop trail directly across from your campsite" is a favorite, providing a scenic 6-mile loop through the rainforest, connecting to the stunning Sol Duc Falls. The Sol Duc Falls trail itself is a relatively easy 0.8-mile one-way hike (1.6 miles roundtrip) from the resort parking area, leading to a picturesque cascading waterfall.

The dense canopy, lush undergrowth, and constant presence of the Sol Duc River create a truly immersive natural environment. Campers should be prepared for consistent rain, as it is a rainforest, and having a canopy or tarp is highly recommended to stay dry and comfortable.
