Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land (U-Pick and Camping)

306 Youngs Cove Rd, Pembroke, ME 04666, USA

5.0
Super special place! Stay if you can! My sister and I camped in early July, just as the blueberries were starting to ripen. We stayed in tent #2. It was super peaceful and private. The tent has two big screened windows on either side for max airflow. The blueberry land is so quiet. We had a restful sleep. Smithereen Farm Store is a total must before checking in to the campsite to stock up on local goodies to complete the "glamping" experience. This part of Downeast Maine is so beautiful and there is lots nearby to explore. Do it! - Julie Lacourciere

What makes Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land particularly appealing to us Mainers is its commitment to sustainable farming and local food. Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land (U-Pick and Camping) is beautifully situated at 306 Youngs Cove Rd, Pembroke, ME 04666, USA. This address places it squarely in the heart of Downeast Maine, a region renowned for its dramatic coastline, serene forests, and authentic maritime culture. For residents throughout Maine, particularly those in the eastern and coastal areas, Pembroke is an accessible yet wonderfully secluded destination.

Its location in Downeast Maine means you're immersed in a quieter, less commercialized part of the state, perfect for truly getting away from it all. While you'll feel private and peaceful at the campground, the area offers plenty to explore nearby. The road to Reversing Falls, for instance, is noted as being very quiet and great for running and biking. Plus, the Smithereen Farm Store, located at 12 Little Falls Road (a short drive away), serves as a convenient hub for provisions and local information.

The accessibility extends to practical needs, as you can fill up your drinking water jug at the Farm Store, which also offers an electric car charging station and Wi-Fi. This balance between rustic charm at the camping site and essential modern conveniences nearby makes Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land an ideal choice for Maine locals. It allows for a deep dive into nature without feeling completely cut off, enabling you to explore the stunning Downeast region, from its beautiful coastlines to its quiet blueberry barrens.

Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land offers a focused set of services designed for a peaceful and authentic camping and farm experience. While not a large resort, its offerings are thoughtful and enhance the unique charm of the location:

  • Tent Platforms: The campground provides dedicated tent platforms, specifically noted as "well-maintained" and newly outfitted in 2023 with custom canvas-covered A-frames built by Haystack Joinery. This ensures a comfortable and private spot for your tent.
  • Organic U-Pick Blueberries: A major highlight is the opportunity for certified-organic U-Pick blueberries. The blueberries are located at 306 Young's Cove Rd (the same address as the camping), with peak season typically in July and August. They provide baskets and operate on an honor system.
  • Farm Store Access: The Smithereen Farm Store (located at 12 Little Falls Road, a short drive away) is open May through October, seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm. Here, campers can:
    • Stock up on local produce, value-added products (jams, teas, vinegar, salves), and goods from other Maine producers.
    • Fill drinking water jugs (as there is no outdoor spigot at Blueberry Land for drinking water).
    • Access an electric car charging station and Wi-Fi.
    • Find free visitor's information about the local area.
  • Basic Facilities:
    • Compost Toilet: Available for campers' convenience.
    • Outdoor Shower: At least one review mentions access to an outdoor shower with hot water at the broader Smithereen Farm campus (specifically related to their Spa Day, which is a separate offering but indicates the presence of the facility). While not directly at "Blueberry Land" campsites, it's part of the overall farm amenities. Another source indicates "no outdoor shower or water spigot at Blueberry Land," so it's essential for campers to confirm or plan for bathing needs, possibly utilizing dips in Pennamaquan (the nearby lake).
    • Outdoor Sink: Available for washing up.
  • Pet-Friendly: Well-behaved dogs are allowed at Blueberry Land, making it easier for pet owners to bring their companions.
  • Bookings via Hipcamp: Campsites are booked through the Hipcamp platform, providing a convenient online reservation system.

Smithereen Farm Blueberry Land offers several unique features and highlights that make it a truly special destination for campers in Maine:

  • Integrated U-Pick Farm Experience: This is perhaps the most distinctive feature. Campers are immersed in an active organic blueberry farm, with the opportunity to pick their own certified-organic blueberries right at their doorstep. This agritourism aspect provides a unique educational and recreational dimension to a camping trip.
  • Super Peaceful and Private Camping: As highlighted by a customer review, the tent sites offer a "super peaceful and private" environment. This seclusion is a major draw for those seeking a quiet escape from daily life.
  • Unique Tent Setup (A-frames): The newly outfitted "custom canvas-covered A-frames" on the tent platforms provide a more comfortable and elevated camping experience, offering better airflow with screened windows, and a step up from basic ground tents. This leans into the "glamping" experience.
  • Access to Smithereen Farm Store: The nearby Farm Store is more than just a place to buy food; it's a "total must" for stocking up on local goodies, fresh produce, and unique value-added products made on the farm. It also serves as a convenient visitor's center with information and essential services like drinking water, Wi-Fi, and an EV charger.
  • Downeast Maine Exploration Hub: The campground serves as an excellent home base for exploring the beautiful Downeast Maine region. There's "lots nearby to explore," including the quiet roads for biking and running, and the stunning scenery of Cobscook Bay.
  • Focus on Organic & Local: Smithereen Farm is a certified organic farm, emphasizing sustainable practices. This aligns with the values of many Maine residents who support local, organic agriculture.
  • Friendly and Helpful Service: Even if you don't stay, the commitment to service is evident, with one reviewer noting how "helpful" the staff was in finding accommodations. This speaks to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
  • Community & Educational Opportunities: Smithereen Farm often hosts workshops (e.g., on algae, fungi, foraging, cooking) and events in collaboration with their sister non-profit, Greenhorns, offering enriching experiences beyond just camping.
