Sheppard Recreation Annex Introduce
For many Texans, a perfect escape involves a tranquil setting, stunning natural views, and a touch of comfort. Sheppard Recreation Annex, a campground situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Texoma in Whitesboro, Texas, offers exactly that. While it's primarily a recreation facility for military-affiliated personnel and their families, it's a hidden gem that provides a serene and well-maintained environment for those who have access. This article is your comprehensive guide to this unique destination, covering its location, extensive services, and the specific highlights that make it a truly special place for a relaxing and nature-filled getaway.
The reviews from visitors paint a clear picture of what makes Sheppard Recreation Annex so beloved. As one reviewer shared, "We absolutely love coming here. The staff is extremely friendly...and the cabins are always clean. We go to just relax at the lake, watch the sunset, and hike through the woods with the dogs (they’re dog-friendly!)." This speaks to the peaceful atmosphere and the high quality of the facilities. Another visitor highlighted the cleanliness, noting that the campground is "well-maintained, with clean facilities that include two showers and two stalls in the women’s bathroom, while the men’s bathroom has one stall, two showers, and a urinal." They also praised the friendly staff and the frequent visits from local deer, which added a "charming touch to the serene atmosphere."
However, a key point from the reviews is the isolated nature of the campground. As one camper cautioned, "the campground is quite isolated, with the nearest gas station 15 miles away and no stores nearby. It’s important to come prepared with all the essentials." This is valuable information for planning a trip and ensures visitors arrive with everything they need for a comfortable stay. The reviews also mention the stunning views of Lake Texoma and the breathtaking sunsets, which are a major highlight for anyone seeking a picturesque setting. The limited activities for those without a boat, as noted by one camper, further emphasizes that this is a place for quiet relaxation and water sports rather than a hub of constant activity.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We absolutely love coming here. The staff is extremely friendly (we love you Anne!) and the cabins are always clean. We go to just relax at the lake, watch the sunset, and hike through the woods with the dogs (they’re dog-friendly!). We also love watching the deer every evening and morning. It’s our little slice of heaven on earth. Did I mention that they make a mean over medium egg breakfast on the weekends! So worth the visit!
October 20 · Teresa HoldenWe recently visited Shepard Recreation Annex, a campground specifically for military-related personnel, and were impressed with its cleanliness and natural beauty. The campground is well-maintained, with clean facilities that include two showers and two stalls in the women’s bathroom, while the men’s bathroom has one stall, two showers, and a urinal. Additionally, there is a laundry room available for campers. The front office personnel were very friendly and welcoming, adding to the pleasant experience. One of the highlights of our stay was the frequent visits from deer, which added a charming touch to the serene atmosphere. All the campsites offer stunning views of Lake Texoma, making for a picturesque setting, especially during the breathtaking sunsets. However, the campground is quite isolated, with the nearest gas station 15 miles away and no stores nearby. It’s important to come prepared with all the essentials. Also, be ready to deal with insects, as they are common in such a natural setting. While the location is perfect for water sports enthusiasts, there are limited activities available for those without a boat. We ended up leaving early because we were looking for more activities to enjoy.Overall, Shepard Recreation Annex is a great spot for a quiet, nature-filled camping experience, particularly if you enjoy water sports and wildlife. Just make sure to bring everything you need and be ready for some isolation
June 14 · luzanda pentonAwesome place and have been going for years. Staff is amazing and very friendly. Plan to return again this summer and hopefully more pontoons are working.
January 07 · MigsWent to the annex to check it out to see if it might be some place we would like to bring our trailer to stay awhile. Roads getting in are not the best. Got there and it has a gate with hours posted on when it is open. Do not believe the sign. It was a Sunday afternoon about 1400. The sign states gate hours are 0700-1700 Sun-Thur. It was a little before 1430 and we tried to get out, THE GATE WAS LOCKED!!! The person running the place did not work the hours posted. Luckily I found a person that was staying in one of the trailers that was able to unlock the gate and let us out. Sounds like it is common for the person to not work posted hours. I heard they only might have one person to work all those hours. I could see a lot of potential in the Annex but I can see it is under utilized by the lack of people there. Might be best to shut it down. Most cabins looked run down but they also had some that looked very new. Not a lot of trailer spots but they did not look bad. Keep in mind you will be locked in or out because of the gate hours if you stay here.
August 11 · Mike BMy family has been coming here for years. Through thick and tin, hard times and floods, this place always bounces back. The cabins are small, but neat, clean and decently supplied. Give it a try, we think you'll like it.
