Hillsboro itself is a relatively small town, providing essential services and a local feel. While the campground offers a quiet and peaceful setting, as noted by several reviewers, it is not so remote as to be inconvenient. In fact, a major highlight mentioned by campers is the presence of a Dollar General store "very close by" – just a short walk outside the park. This proximity to a convenient store means campers can easily restock on basic foods, supplies, and forgotten items without having to drive far into town, blending the feel of an escape with practical accessibility.
The campground's location off N Shore Drive suggests good road access for various types of vehicles, from vans and pop-up trailers to large RVs. Peaceful & Quiet Environment: Despite offering amenities and accommodating various campers, the campground is frequently described as "quiet" and "peaceful." This is a significant highlight for those seeking a relaxing escape, free from the noise and hustle often found in larger, busier campgrounds. The absence of road noise or trains contributes to this tranquility.
Proximity to Rocky Fork Lake: Located very close to Rocky Fork Lake, campers have easy access to a 2,080-acre lake known for boating, fishing, and swimming. This offers a wide range of water-based activities just moments from their campsite, greatly expanding the recreational opportunities available.
Family-Friendly Focus: The "Family Campground" in its name truly resonates. With a playground, recreational pavilion (for activities like Bingo), and planned weekend activities, Shady Trails is clearly designed with families in mind, ensuring entertainment for children and opportunities for families to bond.
Cleanliness and Safety: Reviewers consistently mention the campground's cleanliness, particularly the bathrooms and showers. Combined with the sense of a "safe" environment, this contributes to a comfortable and worry-free stay for all visitors.

Mix of Campers & Community Feel: The campground accommodates both transient (overnight/short-term) campers and seasonal residents. While some find the presence of seasonal campers notable, it often contributes to a stable and friendly community atmosphere within the park.
These features collectively underscore why Shady Trails Family Campground is a highly recommended choice for Ohioans looking for a comfortable, friendly, and peaceful camping getaway with easy access to lake activities.
While Shady Trails Family Campground may not advertise widespread "promotions" in the form of complex seasonal sales, its commitment to hospitality and guest satisfaction is evident in its value offerings and accommodating nature. Based on typical campground practices and common offerings for similar establishments, here's what prospective campers might consider:
Competitive Pricing: The campground aims to offer competitive rates for its various site types, ensuring good value for the amenities and experience provided. While specific daily rates would need to be confirmed directly, private campgrounds typically adjust pricing based on hookups (water, electric, sewer) and site size.
Last-Minute Accommodation: As highlighted in customer reviews, the owners are "accommodating" even for "last-minute" requests. While not a discount, this flexibility can be a huge benefit for spontaneous travelers or those facing unexpected changes in plans, offering a solution when other campgrounds might be fully booked.
Value-Added Amenities: The inclusion of clean restrooms with hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and a level concrete pad at sites (for some spots) are standard inclusions that add significant value without extra charges. The playground and pavilion for activities also contribute to the overall value for families.
Seasonal Site Options: For those looking for an extended stay or a regular local retreat, Shady Trails offers seasonal sites. These typically provide a more cost-effective option for long-term campers compared to daily or weekly rates, allowing residents to establish a "home away from home" throughout the camping season.
Friendly Service: While intangible, the consistent positive feedback on the "great" and "polite" owners and "friendly staff" is a significant "special offer." Excellent customer service contributes immensely to a pleasant and memorable stay, often outweighing minor price differences.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on current rates, any specific discounts (e.g., for Good Sam members, military, or first responders, which are common at private campgrounds, though not explicitly stated for Shady Trails in all public data), or group rates, it is always best to contact Shady Trails Family Campground directly. Their accommodating nature suggests they would be happy to discuss options for your visit.

Such a nice spot to rest. We van camp and called last minute, the owners were very polite and accommodating. Quiet, peaceful, safe, and clean. Dog friendly. What more could you ask for.Our site had water and electric which was nice to recharge our batteries and run electric cooler. Our spot was very sunny but some had nice trees for shade. There was a picnic table and level concrete pad for parking. This is a mix of campers and some who live in big rvs. There was bingo at the pavilion when we arrived and a nice playground.Bathrooms were clean, showers were hot and there is a dollar general very close by. Thanks for your help in our last minute request.
Sep 22, 2024 · Heather WilliamsWe stayed several times with family. A great family campground. The owners are great! Can’t go wrong with a stay here.
Jun 17, 2025 · Rick Hallthe reviews said they had permanent spots for an RV but not being able to find a website, I called the number listed and got no answer after multiple calls. so, i drove there trying to find out information about booking a spot. the entire park was fenced off and locked away but there were plenty of RVs still inside. obviously, im confused since every review is saying they're open. i start looking for another entrance on nearby roads. upon driving around & looking for an entrance to the park, one of the owners came out of the back of their house, throwing her arms up at me in confusion. she acted like i was stupid for not knowing they were NOT open all year round, despite what the little info i found about them online said. she made it seem i was infringing upon her and was disturbing her by simply driving on a public road. she gave me such an attitude that i wouldn't have booked even if they were open. maybe put a sign up that says the park is closed instead of fencing it away with TONS of RVs still inside, or answer the phone when people call with questions, OR just don't be rude to people trying to fund your business. this entire interaction from this woman made me want to eat concrete.
Nov 22, 2024 · Ashley WeiheGreat, quiet place, with good people.
May 20, 2024 · J JWe have a permanent spot and have for 2 seasons now. We have met lots of great people and enjoy every weekend we can here. My grandkids love coming and staying with us and have lots of fun with all the other kids. I think the owners are fair, kind and enjoy taking care of the campgrounds. I only wish I had found this place 20 years ago when my kids were small. Our season just ended and we are counting down the days to April 1 2020. See you in the spring.
