Second Campground

Campground ★3.0

Whiteriver, AZ 85941, USA

3.0
Such a beautiful place to visit! We've been through here a few times before, stopping and having lunch midway through our raft. But I had never gotten the chance to really experience the sheer beauty until we booked a Raft and Camp with Salt River Rafting LLC. We had such an amazing time!First things first, you have to have a permit to travel onto tribal lands before the guards will allow you to pass. We got our permit through the rafting company. The road down is quite rough, so I would suggest something with some clearance. Our Forester did fine. There's a really awesome energy here! - Anthony Maiden

Second Campground Introduce

For Arizona residents seeking an authentic and rugged outdoor experience, the state offers countless hidden gems away from the more crowded national parks. One such place is Second Campground, a destination that promises not only a scenic retreat but also a unique cultural and environmental experience. Located near Whiteriver, this campground is a gateway to the beautiful Salt River and the stunning landscapes of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. It is a place for adventurers who are prepared to embrace a few extra steps in their planning for a truly rewarding journey.

This guide is designed to provide local users with all the essential information about Second Campground. We will cover its specific location, the crucial details regarding accessibility and permits, and the unique features that make this spot a memorable camping destination. From the need for a permit to the rough roads, knowing what to expect is key to a successful and enjoyable trip. The tone is friendly and professional, guiding you toward a well-planned and unforgettable outdoor adventure in a beautiful, protected area of Arizona.

Location and Accessibility

Second Campground is situated in a remote and beautiful area near Whiteriver, Arizona. The physical address is Whiteriver, AZ 85941, USA. This location places the campground on tribal lands, specifically within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This is the most crucial detail for anyone planning to visit, as it directly impacts accessibility.

Accessing Second Campground requires a permit. As one review states, "you have to have a permit to travel onto tribal lands before the guards will allow you to pass." This is a strict requirement, and visitors without the necessary documentation risk being fined. One user review explicitly warns, "Get a permit or they’ll fine you $50 each." It is highly recommended to obtain the permit in advance. For those participating in guided activities like rafting, the company, such as Salt River Rafting LLC mentioned in a review, may handle the permit process for you, which simplifies the process.

In addition to the permit, visitors should be prepared for the road conditions. A user review notes that "the road down is quite rough," and advises using "something with some clearance." While a Forester was mentioned as doing fine, vehicles with low clearance may struggle. This rugged accessibility helps to maintain the area's pristine and less-trafficked nature, making the journey part of the adventure for those with suitable vehicles.

Services Offered

Second Campground offers a very basic, primitive camping experience. The primary service available is on-site parking. This is a crucial feature, as it allows campers to safely park their vehicles while they enjoy the area, whether for a quick lunch break or an overnight stay.

  • On-site parking: The availability of on-site parking is noted, which is a key service for visitors, especially those who plan to stay overnight or spend the day exploring the area's natural attractions.
  • Lack of amenities: Based on the available information and the nature of the location as a "campground," it is important to assume a lack of developed services like restrooms, running water, or trash disposal. Visitors should be prepared to be fully self-sufficient, following a "Leave No Trace" philosophy by packing in and packing out all supplies and waste.

Features / Highlights

The true highlights of Second Campground are not the amenities, but the natural environment and the unique activities it enables.

  • Scenic Beauty and Location: The campground is described as a "beautiful place to visit." Its location along the Salt River and on tribal land provides a unique and visually stunning backdrop for camping. The area is known for its dramatic canyons and pristine river.
  • Rafting and Water Activities: The area is a prime spot for river activities. One review mentions a "Raft and Camp with Salt River Rafting LLC," highlighting that the campground serves as a great base for multi-day rafting trips. For those not on a guided trip, it's still an excellent place to enjoy the river for a day.
  • Authentic and Secluded Experience: Due to the permit requirement and the rough access road, the campground often offers a less crowded and more authentic experience than other popular spots. The reviews suggest a serene and energetic atmosphere. One user noted a "really awesome energy here," which speaks to the peaceful and positive vibe of the location.
  • A Great Stopping Point: For those on longer trips, the campground serves as an excellent place to stop and have lunch. As one user mentioned, they had "stopping and having lunch midway through our raft." This highlights its utility not just for overnight camping but also for day-use enjoyment.

Contact Information

The address for the campground is:

Whiteriver, AZ 85941, USA

As a remote, primitive site, there is no direct phone number for the campground itself. For information on permits and regulations, it is essential to contact the Fort Apache Indian Reservation or the White Mountain Apache Tribe's Game and Fish Department. For those planning a rafting trip, contacting a reputable outfitter like Salt River Rafting LLC is the best way to get accurate information about access and permits.

What is Worth Choosing

Second Campground is worth choosing for the Arizona resident who is an experienced camper and seeks a genuine, rugged, and peaceful outdoor experience. This is not a place for a casual family trip in a sedan; it's a destination for those who are prepared to handle primitive conditions and a challenging drive. The need for a permit and the rough road serve as a natural filter, which ensures that the area remains quiet and less crowded than many other public lands.

The primary draw is the incredible setting and the access it provides to the beautiful Salt River. It's a fantastic base for river activities, photography, and simply enjoying the raw, natural beauty of the region. The feeling of being in a unique, protected, and relatively untamed part of Arizona is a significant reward. For those who appreciate the quiet of nature and the sense of adventure that comes with a slightly more challenging journey, Second Campground offers an experience that is hard to match. The opportunity to camp in a place with such "awesome energy" and pristine beauty makes the extra planning and effort entirely worthwhile for the true outdoor enthusiast.
