Sawmill Campground

Sawmill Campground Rd, Lake Hughes, CA 93532, USA

Didn't camp here but road bike along FR7N23 in February '24 coming up from Lake Hughes. Gate on Maxwell Rd is closed as there is a major wash out making it impassable for vehicles. Stopped here for lunch. Looks to have been refurbished a bit as the trash cans looked brand new. The pit toilet could use some love but otherwise looked to be a really nice CG. Lots of trees and more inviting than Bear CG. - So Cal Joe

Location and Accessibility

Sawmill Campground is located at Sawmill Campground Rd, Lake Hughes, CA 93532, USA, within the expansive Angeles National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,200 feet, it offers cooler temperatures and a different perspective compared to the lower desert regions of Southern California.

Accessing Sawmill Campground requires a bit of planning due to current road conditions. It is crucial to note that you must access this campground from Pine Canyon Road. There is a known washout on Forest Road 7N23 (which connects to Maxwell Road) and also a road closure off of Old Ridge Route / Quail Lake Road, making these routes impassable for vehicles. Visitors have noted that the last bit of the trail to the campground can be rough, suggesting that a 4x4 vehicle or big tires are beneficial, especially during or after wet weather. However, some reviews indicate that with careful and slow driving, 2WD vehicles can also manage the access road. Despite the potentially bumpy ride, the journey is often considered part of the adventure, leading to a secluded and rewarding destination. For the most up-to-date information on road conditions and accessibility, it is always recommended to call the Acton Work Center at (661) 269-2808 or the LA Gateway Ranger District at (818) 899-1900 before your trip.

Services Offered
  • Eight Campsites: Sawmill Campground offers a limited number of individual campsites, contributing to a more intimate and less crowded experience.
  • Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are available in the form of vault toilets, maintained for public use. Visitors should be aware that while functional, they may not always be in pristine condition.

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, offering a convenient surface for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
  • Fire Rings: Fire rings are available at each site for campfires, though visitors must adhere strictly to current fire restrictions, which can often be in place in California's national forests.
