This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Santa Fe Campground, highlighting its features and why it might be a suitable destination for local users connected to the Fort Irwin community.
Santa Fe Campground, located on an Unnamed Road in Fort Irwin, CA, is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's described as a "vacation resort" that fosters camaraderie and provides a clean, well-maintained environment. It's particularly appreciated by those affiliated with the military, offering a familiar and supportive setting for rest and recreation. Reviewers consistently praise its cleanliness, noting its pristine condition, at least until larger groups of military personnel ("MB1") utilize the area. This indicates a general commitment to upkeep and a desire to provide a pleasant experience for its temporary residents.
Beyond its practical amenities, Santa Fe Campground is celebrated for its natural surroundings. The location offers ample opportunities to observe local wildlife and boasts "perfect locations for pictures of landscape," suggesting scenic vistas and a connection to the unique desert ecosystem. This combination of a well-kept facility and immersive natural beauty makes Santa Fe Campground a compelling choice for those seeking a tranquil and restorative getaway within the high desert environment of California.
Santa Fe Campground is located at Unnamed Road, Fort Irwin, CA 92310, USA. Fort Irwin is a major U.S. Army training center situated in the Mojave Desert, approximately 37 miles northeast of Barstow, California. The remote nature of this location contributes to its quiet and undeveloped surroundings, which is a significant draw for many visitors.
Access to Fort Irwin, and consequently to Santa Fe Campground, typically involves traveling through the main gates of the military installation. This implies that access may be restricted to authorized personnel, military families, and guests who have undergone the necessary security procedures. While the provided address is a general "Unnamed Road," specific directions or internal navigation once on base would likely be provided upon entry or through MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) services at Fort Irwin. Visitors not familiar with military installations should anticipate security checks and be prepared to show appropriate identification. The remote desert setting means that public transportation options are limited, and personal vehicle access is essential. This unique location, while potentially requiring an extra step for entry, ensures a level of security and exclusivity that contributes to the campground's appeal for its primary user base. It's advisable for non-military personnel to confirm public access policies with Fort Irwin's MWR or Visitor Control Center before planning a trip.
Based on the available information and typical offerings for similar facilities on military installations, Santa Fe Campground provides essential services aimed at comfort and functionality for its guests.
- Clean Camping Areas: Reviewers consistently highlight the cleanliness of the campground, indicating that sites are well-maintained and tidy, at least during less busy periods.
- Picnic Tables/Grills: While not explicitly stated for Santa Fe Campground itself, associated RV parks within Fort Irwin's MWR system offer tables and grills at each space, suggesting a similar provision for standard camping areas.
- RV Camp Sites: Fort Irwin's Outdoor Recreation program includes an RV Park with 87 spaces, offering water, sewer hookups, and 20/30/50 amp power pedestals. While "Santa Fe Campground" is listed separately, it's possible it offers similar RV amenities, or serves as a more primitive overflow/tent camping area.
- Restroom Access: Although one review mentions a desire for showers to make it a "5*," the presence of restrooms is implied, especially given the general emphasis on cleanliness. Other MWR-operated RV parks at Fort Irwin boast 24-hour bathroom/shower access. It is likely that Santa Fe Campground, if a distinct entity, provides basic restroom facilities (e.g., flush toilets or pit toilets) to maintain its clean environment.
- Community-Oriented Environment: The campground facilitates "bonding with your fellow soldiers," indicating a supportive and friendly atmosphere.
It is important to note that while "showers" are desired by a reviewer, their absence prevented a 5-star rating, suggesting they may not be a standard amenity directly at Santa Fe Campground, though they might be available at a central MWR facility nearby. Visitors should confirm specific amenities with Fort Irwin's Outdoor Recreation or MWR.
Santa Fe Campground offers a range of features and highlights that make it a compelling choice, particularly for military personnel and their families, as well as authorized visitors seeking a unique desert experience.
- Exceptional Cleanliness: Consistently praised for being "very clean," the campground provides a pleasant and hygienic environment for campers. This is a significant advantage for those who prioritize well-maintained facilities.
- Abundant Wildlife: The location boasts "plenty of wildlife for your family to see." This suggests opportunities for observing desert animals in their natural habitat, adding an educational and exciting element to the camping experience. Common desert wildlife in the Mojave can include various bird species, lizards, jackrabbits, coyotes, and occasionally larger mammals like bobcats or desert bighorn sheep.
- Stunning Desert Landscapes: Described as a "perfect location for pictures of landscape," the campground is set against a backdrop of the distinctive Mojave Desert scenery. This offers unique photographic opportunities and a chance to appreciate the rugged beauty of the high desert.

- Temporary Residence Option: The note about "temporary residents that come through must love it because they keep coming back" highlights its suitability for longer stays or recurring visits, indicating a comfortable and welcoming environment.
- Quiet Desert Solitude: Despite being on a military installation, the emphasis on landscape and wildlife suggests areas where campers can find peace and quiet, away from the more active training zones.
These highlights underscore Santa Fe Campground's appeal as a clean, scenic, and community-oriented retreat within the unique setting of the Mojave Desert.

May 14, 2025 · Brian BBest camping spot ever. Never had room service on a camp ground before, if you over sleep, one of the staff (sergeant) members will wake you up! How courteous. Hungry? Don't worry! They bring food right to ya! You'll be in line for an hour so make sure you bring a Popsicle! Don't have a Popsicle? No problem, just heat cat! The medics will bring one and you'll have a firm grip on a Popsicle in no time. 10/10 bringing the whole family next time.
Sep 03, 2024 · Nico RaileyGreat lodging. Hot showers, free HBO, and the corned beef hash is to die for. The front desk was out of board games so I’d bring an XBOX from home if possible.
