We started out by calling this place "Great value Maui" by the end of it we had an entirely unique experience that has cemented this trip and hike as one of my favorites in Ca. We stayed 2 nights which was enough. Arrived on the 3pm ferry set up camp cooked dinner had a couple drinks on the beach and then went to bed. We woke up the next day took in the kayaking tour (a bit pricey 150 but worth it if you are new to kayaking and caves) we finished that had our lunch and set out for a 9.5 Mile hike that was challenging but really pretty. The final day we broke down campafter breakfast and hung out on the beach until 230. The first boat did not leave until 330. It would have been much better at 10, 12 or 2. It could be an efficiency thing, but it really was not a convenience thing because we drove home to Sacramento. We didnt get back until midnight. Which was fine but then you are tired for the next day. - Joseph Elmer

Location and Accessibility

Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Canyon Campground is uniquely located on Santa Cruz Island, which is part of the Channel Islands National Park, off the coast of Ventura, California. Its address, Santa Cruz Island, Potato Harbor Rd, Ventura, CA 93001, USA, highlights its remote, island setting rather than a conventional roadside location. This means accessibility is entirely dependent on boat transportation.

The primary way to reach Santa Cruz Island, and subsequently the Scorpion Canyon Campground, is via a scheduled ferry service, typically operated by Island Packers, from Ventura Harbor. Visitors must book their ferry tickets in advance, and it's crucial to coordinate ferry times with your camping reservations. The ferry ride itself is an integral part of the experience, offering scenic views of the California coastline and potential wildlife sightings, such as dolphins or whales, en route to the island.

Upon arrival at Scorpion Cove on Santa Cruz Island, the campground is a relatively short walk from the ferry landing. This makes it convenient for campers carrying their gear. While the island offers extensive trails, the campground itself is quite accessible once you've disembarked from the boat. It's designed to be walk-in friendly from the ferry drop-off point, ensuring that even those without extensive backpacking experience can enjoy the island's beauty.

It's important for visitors to note that Santa Cruz Island is a wilderness area. There are no paved roads, private vehicles, or convenience stores once you arrive. All supplies, including food, water (beyond what is provided at the campground's spigots), and camping gear, must be brought with you on the ferry. The "pack it in, pack it out" principle is strictly enforced to maintain the island's pristine condition, meaning all trash must be carried off the island when you depart.

The remote island location, while requiring careful planning for transportation and supplies, is precisely what makes Scorpion Canyon Campground so appealing. It offers a true escape from mainland California, providing an unparalleled sense of wildness and isolation while still being relatively accessible for a multi-day trip. This unique accessibility via boat contributes significantly to the feeling of an entirely distinct and unforgettable adventure.
