Salisbury Beach Campground

Salisbury, MA 01952, USA

4.0
The campground is beautiful and mostly empty. It may be because the website is impossible to navigate, the ladies at the front desk are unable and unwilling to help you book another night, they don't come out to help you sign in, there are no signs to tell you how to check in, and it is more expensive than a local motel. It's really a shame because it's a beautiful location. - N Mac

For Massachusetts locals yearning for a quintessential New England coastal camping experience, Salisbury Beach Campground stands as a prime destination. Located within the Salisbury Beach State Reservation, this sprawling campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf right from your campsite. It’s a beloved spot for many families and outdoor enthusiasts across the Commonwealth, providing direct access to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and the scenic Merrimack River. Whether you're a seasoned RVer or prefer the simplicity of a tent, Salisbury Beach Campground offers a vibrant, yet relaxing, environment to create lasting memories right here in our home state.

Salisbury Beach Campground is conveniently situated in Salisbury, MA 01952, at the northeastern tip of Massachusetts. Its location is a significant draw, extending 3.8 miles along the Atlantic Ocean from the mouth of the Merrimack River to the New Hampshire border. This positioning grants campers immediate access to a vast, sandy beach, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and long walks. The western side of the reservation is bordered by salt marsh, adding to the ecological diversity and natural beauty of the area. Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, typically via Route 1A, making it an easy drive for most residents across Massachusetts. While the location is highly desirable, especially during peak season, it’s worth noting that traffic can be heavy on weekends, and parking at the main beach area can be crowded. However, within the campground, sites are well-placed to provide a sense of space and connection to nature. The campground itself is located right by the state beach and adjacent to the Merrimack River, providing multiple options for water-based recreation.

Services Offered:

  • Over 400 campsites are available, accommodating both tents and RVs.
  • Each campsite is equipped with water and electric hookups (20/30/50 amp service varies by site), a picnic table, and a fire ring.
  • Comfort stations with flush toilets and showers are located throughout the campground. While improvements have been noted by recent visitors, some infrastructure, particularly in older bathhouses, may show signs of wear and tear, and shower drainage can sometimes be an issue.
  • A dumping station is available for RVs.
  • Three comfort stations are located by the beach, along with over-the-dune boardwalks for easy beach access.
  • Two boat ramps on the Merrimack River are available for those bringing their own watercraft, providing convenient access for boating and fishing. These boat ramps are known to be less crowded on weekdays, even in August.
  • A children's playground is on-site, offering recreational opportunities for younger campers.
  • A rentable pavilion area is available for group gatherings, which can be reserved through ReserveAmerica.
  • A heated bathroom facility and a camp store may also be available, enhancing convenience for campers.

Features / Highlights:

  • Direct access to Salisbury Beach, a 3.8-mile long sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.
  • Proximity to the Merrimack River, offering additional opportunities for boating, fishing, and launching kayaks or canoes.
  • The campground is one of only a handful of beach campgrounds in Massachusetts, providing a unique coastal camping experience.
  • Designated wildlife refuge areas within the state reservation offer opportunities for bird watching and observing local marine life, including harbor seals in the fall and winter.
  • Picnic areas and boardwalks enhance the beach experience.
  • The presence of lifeguards during the summer months ensures safe swimming.
  • Fire rings at each campsite allow for traditional campfire experiences, with firewood available for purchase at the campground (transporting firewood into or out of DCR campgrounds is prohibited).
  • The area provides access to nearby attractions such as the Salisbury Beach Boardwalk (with concessions during tourist season), the town of Newburyport, and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

Promotions or Special Offers:

As a state-run facility operated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Salisbury Beach Campground primarily operates with set rates and fees rather than frequent promotional offers. However, it’s important for Massachusetts residents to note that camping fees are often significantly lower for MA residents compared to non-residents (e.g., $22 for MA residents vs. $70 for non-residents per night, plus hookup fees). There is also a $3 surcharge that benefits the Salisbury Beach Trust Fund. Reservations are required and incur a non-refundable transaction charge. While there aren't typically "discounts" in the commercial sense, planning your trip during the shoulder seasons (early May or late October/November, weather permitting) might offer a slightly quieter experience and potentially different rates. For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, reservation windows, and any specific policies, it is always recommended to consult the official Massachusetts DCR website for Salisbury Beach State Reservation or the ReserveAmerica platform where bookings are made. Be aware that popular dates, especially weekends and holidays, fill up very quickly, often immediately upon reservation windows opening, making early booking essential.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Salisbury Beach Campground is an ideal destination for Massachusetts locals for numerous reasons. Firstly, its prime coastal location offers the unparalleled convenience of beachfront camping, allowing quick and easy access to one of the state's most popular beaches. This proximity to the ocean and the Merrimack River provides a wide array of recreational activities, from swimming and fishing to boating and simply relaxing by the waves. Secondly, as a state park campground, it provides an affordable and accessible option for outdoor adventures within the Commonwealth, especially with the resident-specific pricing. While some infrastructure may be older, the DCR continuously works to maintain and improve facilities, and the fundamental appeal of the location remains strong. Finally, it offers a tangible escape without requiring extensive travel, making it perfect for weekend getaways or longer summer vacations. For those in Massachusetts seeking a classic beach camping experience, Salisbury Beach Campground remains a cherished and convenient choice, promising sun-filled days and starry nights right on the beautiful North Shore.
