Rose Canyon Lake Introduce
For Arizonans in the Tucson area, a swift and stunning escape from the desert heat is just a short drive up the Catalina Highway. At an elevation of 7,000 feet on the slopes of Mt. Lemmon, Rose Canyon Lake and its beautiful campground offer a cherished oasis. This destination is a perfect example of a "sky island" — a cool, forested haven rising dramatically from the Sonoran Desert floor. It provides a peaceful and scenic setting for a day trip or an overnight stay, with the centerpiece being the serene, six-acre lake nestled among towering ponderosa pines and oaks.
Rose Canyon Lake Campground is a popular spot for both day visitors and overnight campers, thanks to its breathtaking scenery and the variety of recreational activities it offers. The campground is well-regarded for its friendly and informative staff, who contribute to the calm and welcoming atmosphere. The campsites are spacious and well-spread out, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion that is highly valued by campers. This natural setting, with a seasonal creek meandering through the area, offers a perfect backdrop for relaxing by the water, enjoying a picnic, or simply breathing in the cool, crisp mountain air.
The unique location of the campground, combined with its natural features, makes it a true retreat. While the road to the campground involves some climbing, the drive itself on the scenic Catalina Highway is a part of the experience, offering spectacular views that change with the elevation. The campground caters to both tent campers and those with smaller RVs, though visitors should be mindful of vehicle size limits, as trailers over 22 feet can be difficult to maneuver. The overall experience at Rose Canyon Lake is one of tranquility and natural beauty, providing a welcome respite and an ideal place to recharge and reconnect with nature, all just a short distance from the city.
Rose Canyon Lake Campground is located on Mt. Lemmon, AZ 85619, USA. It is approximately 17 miles northeast of Tucson, situated between mile markers 17 and 18 on the Catalina Highway, also known as the General Hitchcock Highway.
The Catalina Highway is the only paved road that leads to this area, and it is a scenic drive in its own right. The drive up the mountain is an integral part of the experience, with its winding roads and panoramic views. Due to the high elevation and potential for sharp turns, those with large trailers or motorhomes should be aware of size limitations (22 feet is a general guideline) for ease of navigation within the campground. The campground’s accessibility is a key highlight for many Arizonans, as it offers a dramatic change in climate and scenery without a long drive. The campground provides convenient on-site parking and a free parking lot for day use visitors.

July 25 · Angela WatkinsWe had a great time. The walk was nice going down. Had to take a break or two on the way up. Our 7 year old managed with little complaints. Between 3 of us, we caught 8 trout. They started biting after 1pm.
January 02 · Cynthia GatesIt's a nice little lake to get away on a hot summer day. As in all things in life, it's much smaller than I remember as a child. Additionally, if you don't have a permit for a camping spot or a picnic table or Ramada, there really isn't any place to picnic directly around the lake -- especially since every free spot will be taken by a fisherman. You can climb up on the sides which are steep and spread a blanket around, but there are no tables around the lake. Despite the fact that it is in the national Forest and you might have a park pass, there is a separate entry fee for this lake and camping ground. There are bathrooms at the parking lot above the lake. Now, I've listed a few negatives if you want to picnic and didn't reserve one of the tables, which are quite a bit further away from the lake, but don't let that dissuade you from coming. It's a lovely escape. If you go on the right side of the lake, it's full of fishermen so there's no chance of sitting by the lake. You'll have to climb up on rocky, loose soil where it's flatter and you can sit. On the left side, The trail is higher up from the shore, so there are fewer fishermen and there are spots where you can picnic closer to the lake. Additionally, there are easier climbs on better soil (it's forested) where you can go to the top of the hill to the east and have a great lookout point.
November 11 · Shawn PendleyDidn't know this cute little lake was here, paid a small fee to enter (so bring cash). When we got to the parking area of the lake, there was a mini scenic walk. Handicap parking is closer down by the lake, so space for handicapis limited. Just be careful for people walking on the narrow road to and from the lake. It was a beautiful experience, and I plan on going back with my kids. I believe kids 10yo and under fish free.
September 29 · Jeanell WalkerHiked to the lake from campground and had a picnic lunch in the group area. This is a fishing lake only. It is a beautiful area on Mount Lemmon. There were several people catching fish. All facilities were clean and rangers on site. Trails well maintained. Great scenery.
