Rohrbach Group Campground

18316 Burnside Bridge Rd, Sharpsburg, MD 21782, USA

4.0
This is a nice, beautiful site and very close to Sharpsburg and the Antietam battlefield. You'll be camping in large areas of mowed grass. The latrines are relatively nice and sturdy, though they are in the parking lot and some sites are relatively far away. Tough walk if you have to go in the middle of the night! I give this one 4 stars because there's no water on site and no pavilion or cover for when the weather turns bad. They ask you not to forage for firewood but they do provide some. You might want to bring your own kindling. It's a very pretty little space but I think next time we come to Sharpsburg we'll look for a site with running water so we don't have to drive off site for water. - Andrew Whitworth

Location and Accessibility

Rohrbach Group Campground boasts a prime location at **18316 Burnside Bridge Rd, Sharpsburg, MD 21782, USA**. This address places it directly in Washington County, a region of Maryland renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. For locals in Maryland, its accessibility is a major plus. Sharpsburg itself is a charming town, and the campground's proximity to major roads makes it an easy drive from many parts of the state.

One of the most appealing aspects of the campground's location is its close proximity to the **Antietam National Battlefield**. This makes it an ideal base for groups interested in exploring American Civil War history. Imagine spending your day hiking the trails where pivotal historical events unfolded and then returning to your campsite for an evening under the stars. The short distance means less travel time and more time to enjoy your activities, whether historical exploration or simply relaxing in nature.

While the campground provides a serene escape, its location near Sharpsburg means that essential amenities like grocery stores or small shops are just a short drive away, allowing for convenient resupply if needed. However, it's worth noting that the campground itself prioritizes a more natural, less developed feel, so planning ahead for certain necessities, particularly water, is recommended.

Services Offered

Rohrbach Group Campground is designed specifically for group camping, offering a foundational set of services to ensure a comfortable, albeit rustic, experience. While it doesn't offer the full suite of amenities found at some commercial campgrounds, its focus is on providing ample space and essential facilities for groups.

  • Spacious Group Camping Areas: The campground features large areas of mowed grass, providing abundant space for multiple tents and group activities. This open layout is perfect for larger gatherings, allowing for flexibility in setting up your camp.

  • Relatively Clean Latrines: While primitive in nature, the campground does provide latrines. Customer reviews often highlight them as "relatively nice and sturdy." These are located in the parking lot, and while some sites might be a bit of a walk, they serve their purpose for basic sanitation.

  • Fire Pits: Each site is equipped with a fire pit, essential for campfires, cooking, and gathering around in the evenings. This is a fundamental amenity for any camping experience, allowing for that classic campfire ambiance.

  • Provided Firewood (Limited Foraging): The campground provides some firewood for campers. While they ask users not to forage for their own wood, having some available is a helpful convenience. Campers are advised to bring their own kindling to ensure an easy start to their fires.

  • Ample Parking: Reviews consistently mention "lots of parking," which is a significant advantage for group camping, where multiple vehicles are often present. Easy access and parking make arrival and departure hassle-free.

It's important for prospective campers to note what is **not** offered. There is no running water on-site, meaning campers need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, or be prepared to drive off-site to access water. Additionally, there is no pavilion or covered area, so groups should plan for their own shelter in case of inclement weather.

Features / Highlights

Beyond its basic services, Rohrbach Group Campground offers several features that make it a standout choice for groups seeking a particular kind of outdoor adventure in Maryland.

  • Proximity to Antietam Battlefield: This is arguably the campground's biggest draw. Being so close to such a significant historical site allows for immersive educational experiences and convenient access to walking tours and monuments. Groups can easily plan day trips to explore the battlefield, enhancing their camping experience with historical context.

  • Expansive Open Spaces: The "large areas of mowed grass" provide a sense of openness and freedom. This is ideal for group activities, games, or simply allowing everyone ample room to spread out and enjoy their surroundings without feeling cramped. It’s a "very pretty little space," offering a picturesque backdrop for your stay.

  • Secluded, Natural Feel: Despite its proximity to Sharpsburg, the campground maintains a natural and somewhat secluded ambiance. This allows for a true escape into nature, offering opportunities for wildlife observation (like the "bunch of turkeys" mentioned in one review!) and peaceful nights under the stars. The "pitch black" darkness noted by a camper highlights the minimal light pollution, perfect for stargazing.

  • Ideal for Scout Troops and Youth Groups: The spaciousness, fire pits, and proximity to hiking opportunities (like the walk to the battlefield) make it perfectly suited for organized youth groups. The ability to engage in activities like hiking and exploring, followed by campfire gatherings, aligns well with the objectives of many such organizations.

While the lack of running water and cover might be a consideration for some, these aspects contribute to the campground's more rugged, authentic camping feel, which is precisely what many groups are looking for. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper connection with the natural environment.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a group campground, Rohrbach Group Campground typically operates on a reservation basis through the managing authority (often a park service or similar organization). Therefore, traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense are not usually applicable. Pricing is generally set per group or per night, rather than offering discounts for specific periods or loyalty programs.

However, the inherent value of Rohrbach Group Campground lies in its affordability relative to the amount of space and unique experience it provides for groups. Compared to individual campsites or more amenity-rich private campgrounds, group sites often offer a cost-effective solution for larger parties. Its main "promotion" is the value it offers by being a dedicated group site in a desirable location, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious organizations or families planning large gatherings.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on booking, availability, and any potential group rate considerations, it is always best to directly contact the campground or the managing entity. They can provide details on how to reserve your dates and any specific policies that might apply to group bookings.

First and foremost, its location in Sharpsburg provides a perfect blend of natural retreat and historical immersion. Being just a stone's throw from the Antietam National Battlefield means that a camping trip can easily be combined with enriching historical exploration, a benefit not readily available at every campground. This unique combination makes it ideal for educational trips for scout troops, history buffs, or families wanting to combine recreation with learning.
