For many Pennsylvanians, the call of the wild and the desire for a refreshing escape into nature are powerful urges. Our state boasts an incredible array of natural beauty, from sprawling forests to winding rivers, offering countless opportunities for outdoor adventures. If you're a local looking for a place to reconnect with nature, enjoy a peaceful retreat, or embark on an exciting outdoor adventure, Riverlands Recreation Area in Berwick, PA, is a destination worth exploring. While recent reviews highlight some significant concerns regarding cleanliness and management, the potential for a fulfilling outdoor experience, especially given its location, remains a key aspect to consider.
A recreation area like Riverlands often offers a diverse range of activities beyond just traditional camping. It typically serves as a hub for various outdoor pursuits, including hiking, fishing, boating, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the natural environment. These areas are designed to provide a structured yet natural setting where individuals, families, and groups can unwind, create lasting memories, and experience the refreshing benefits of being outdoors. The allure of waking up to the sounds of nature, enjoying a campfire under the stars, or spending a day exploring trails is a deeply cherished experience for many Pennsylvanians.
Riverlands Recreation Area, with its name suggesting a focus on its riverside location, implies opportunities for water-based activities and scenic views. While acknowledging the importance of user feedback regarding operational aspects, the inherent natural beauty and the potential for a variety of recreational activities are central to its appeal. For those planning a getaway, understanding both its strengths and reported weaknesses is key to managing expectations and maximizing the enjoyment of your visit.
The location of Riverlands Recreation Area at 1175 Salem Blvd, Berwick, PA 18603, USA, is a significant draw for Pennsylvania locals. Berwick is situated in Luzerne County, a region of Northeastern Pennsylvania known for its scenic landscapes, particularly its proximity to the Susquehanna River. This strategic placement makes Riverlands Recreation Area a convenient and accessible destination for a large segment of the state's population.
Salem Boulevard (Route 11) is a primary roadway, ensuring excellent accessibility to the recreation area. This means that reaching Riverlands from various parts of Pennsylvania, including major cities like Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Harrisburg, is relatively straightforward. The ease of access minimizes travel time, allowing visitors to spend more of their precious leisure hours enjoying the outdoors. While the provided reviews do not delve into specific public transportation options, the nature of a recreation area typically implies reliance on personal vehicles for transportation to and within the site.
Beyond the immediate area of Berwick, Luzerne County offers a wealth of surrounding attractions and natural wonders. The Susquehanna River itself provides ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking. Numerous state parks, state forests, and game lands are also within reasonable driving distance, expanding the scope of outdoor activities available to visitors. The convenience of being able to find essential supplies, local dining, and other necessities in Berwick ensures that campers and cabin users have everything they need for a comfortable stay.
A recreation area, especially one offering camping and potential cabin rentals, typically provides a range of services to facilitate a comfortable stay. However, recent reviews for Riverlands Recreation Area indicate significant inconsistencies in service quality and availability. Based on common expectations for such facilities and the user feedback, here's an overview of services, along with noted discrepancies:
- Camp Store/Food Service: One positive review mentions stopping by the "camp store for breakfast on the way to work .... great food served to order." This indicates that a convenience store and potentially a food service counter are available, which is a valuable amenity for quick meals and supplies.
- Camping Sites/Cabin Rentals: The core service of a campground/recreation area. Reviews explicitly mention "getting our keys" and finding issues with a "bed with no sheets," indicating that cabin or lodging rentals are offered. Traditional camping sites (for tents/RVs) are also highly probable.
- Check-in Procedures: A critical service. However, a review states, "they no longer have someone to check you in or a number to call if something is not good." This points to a self-check-in system, which can be problematic if issues arise.
- Restroom/Shower Facilities: Essential for any comfortable stay. While not directly reviewed, low water pressure at the sink when a toilet is flushed is mentioned, suggesting a potential issue with the plumbing system in the accommodations or shared facilities.
- Internet Access: The review notes "no password for their internet," indicating that Wi-Fi is intended to be a service but was not readily accessible or properly configured during a visit.
- Cleanliness Standards: A crucial service for lodging. The review highlights significant issues: "dirty, sticky counter, a bed with no sheets, dirty floors, hair covered pillows, hair in the bed and stains on the sheets, the bath mat was balled up and dirty too." This indicates a severe lapse in housekeeping and maintenance protocols.
It is evident that while some services are conceptually offered, their execution and maintenance quality have been a source of major dissatisfaction for recent visitors, particularly concerning the cleanliness and on-site support for cabin rentals.
Despite the critical recent feedback, Riverlands Recreation Area possesses inherent features and highlights due to its classification as a recreation area and its location. These are the elements that, if properly maintained and managed, would contribute to a positive experience:
- Riverside Location: Its name, "Riverlands," strongly suggests proximity to a river, most likely the Susquehanna, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and scenic views. This is a significant natural highlight for any outdoor enthusiast.
- Diverse Outdoor Activities: As a recreation area, it is designed to support a range of activities beyond just camping, such as hiking, picnicking, and wildlife observation.
- Camp Store/Food Service: The mention of a camp store serving "great food" is a definite highlight, providing a convenient option for meals and basic supplies without leaving the area.
- Cabin/Lodging Options: The availability of cabin rentals, even with reported cleanliness issues, is a feature that caters to those who prefer more structured accommodation than traditional tent camping.
- Proximity to Berwick: Being close to a town like Berwick means easy access to local shops, restaurants, and other essential services should the need arise.
- Natural Environment: Situated in Luzerne County, the area offers a natural setting conducive to relaxation and enjoying the Pennsylvania outdoors.
- Potential for Improvement: While current reviews highlight issues, the core infrastructure (store, cabins, location) suggests a strong potential for improved visitor experiences if management addresses the identified concerns regarding cleanliness and support.
For visitors, understanding that the quality of experience hinges heavily on the current operational standards is crucial. The natural setting and available amenities present a strong foundation, but current management execution is a significant factor.
Publicly available information for Riverlands Recreation Area does not explicitly detail any ongoing promotions or special offers. Given the critical nature of recent reviews concerning management and cleanliness, it is less likely that the facility would be actively promoting discounts or special deals without first addressing fundamental operational improvements.
However, general practices in the camping and recreation industry might include:
- Off-Season Rates: Reduced pricing for stays during less popular times of the year (e.g., early spring, late fall).
- Weekly/Monthly Discounts: Special rates for extended stays.
- Group Rates: Discounts for large bookings, such as for family reunions or youth groups.
- Loyalty Programs: Though less common for independent sites, some larger operations offer rewards for returning visitors.
To inquire about any potential offers or flexible booking options, visitors would need to contact Riverlands Recreation Area directly. However, based on the review indicating a lack of consistent on-site presence or a reliable contact number for issues, obtaining such information might be challenging. Prospective visitors should be prepared for standard pricing and focus on verifying the current state of facilities rather than expecting promotions.
For Pennsylvanians looking to learn more about Riverlands Recreation Area, or to inquire about bookings and current conditions, direct contact with the facility is the primary method. While a review indicates challenges in contacting the company for issues, the provided phone number is the official point of contact.
Address: 1175 Salem Blvd, Berwick, PA 18603, USA
Phone: (570) 520-4070
It is strongly recommended that any prospective visitors utilize this phone number to speak directly with management or a representative before making any firm plans. This will allow them to ask specific questions regarding the current state of cleanliness, check-in procedures, available amenities (especially Wi-Fi and water pressure), and confirm if there is on-site staff for support. Given the critical feedback, proactive communication is essential for managing expectations.
For Pennsylvanians seeking an outdoor escape, Riverlands Recreation Area in Berwick offers a compelling location with inherent natural advantages. Its proximity to the Susquehanna River and placement within Luzerne County provides a picturesque backdrop for various outdoor pursuits, from fishing and boating to hiking and simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. For locals, the ease of access via major roadways means less travel time and more time spent enjoying the natural beauty that defines our state. The presence of a camp store with food service, as highlighted by a positive review, also adds a layer of convenience often appreciated by campers.
However, it is crucial for local residents to consider the significant concerns raised in recent reviews regarding cleanliness, particularly in the lodging, and the apparent lack of on-site support or accessible contact for immediate issues. While the fundamental offerings of camping and cabins are there, the quality of their execution, especially concerning basic hygiene and guest assistance, appears to be a major drawback. For Pennsylvanians who are prepared to thoroughly investigate current conditions by contacting the facility directly, perhaps even arranging a visit if possible, and who prioritize location and the potential for outdoor activities above all else, Riverlands Recreation Area could still be a consideration. It offers the foundation of a great outdoor getaway, but prospective visitors must manage their expectations and verify that current operational standards meet their requirements for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Stop by the camp store for breakfast on the way to work .... great food served to order.
Apr 30, 2025 · Andy SabischIt is a shame...this place used to be a nice clean place. Tonight we "checked" in, they no longer have someone to check you in or a number to call if something is not good. After getting out keys we opened the door to find a dirty, sticky counter, a bed with no sheets, dirty floors, hair covered pillows, hair in the bed and stains on the sheets, the bath mat was balled up and dirty too. There is very low water pressure and if someone flushes the toilet, there is not pressure at the sink to wash hands. There was also no password for their internet. I would have added photos but Riverlands Recreation area Campground does not allow it...wonder why?
