Rio Bravo Campground offers a range of services designed to enhance comfort and convenience, with a strong focus on cleanliness and friendly support.
Campsites for Tents and RVs: The campground features 12 campsites along the banks of the Rio Grande. These include 4 pull-through RV/trailer sites equipped with water and electric hookups, making them suitable for rigs up to 30 feet. There are also 8 standard campsites, well-suited for tent camping or smaller setups. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each site comes with a covered table, fire ring, grill, and BBQ pedestal, enhancing the camping experience.
Clean Restrooms and Hot Showers: A standout feature, repeatedly praised by visitors, is the exceptional cleanliness of the restrooms and showers. As one reviewer stated, "Restrooms and showers are so clean." Another noted, "Showers are wonderful and quarter operated." These showers provide "hot and good pressure," costing $1.00 for 4 minutes (or quarters per minute). While there were previous notes about showers being closed, current information confirms they are open and operational, a significant amenity for campers.
Potable Water and Trash Collection: The campground provides access to drinking water at spigots and has trash collection facilities, ensuring basic necessities are met and the area remains clean.
Dedicated Camp Hosts: Visitors consistently rave about the camp hosts. Randy and Sue were described as "terrific people," while Kether and his dog Choco were praised for being "very attentive to keeping bathrooms clean and very helpful and friendly to guests." The presence of such attentive and friendly hosts significantly enhances the camping experience, providing assistance and maintaining high standards.
Firewood for Purchase: Firewood is available for purchase directly from the camp host, a convenient service for those who wish to enjoy campfires (when permitted).
Group Camping: Group camping options are also available, making it suitable for larger gatherings or organized events.
Rio Bravo Campground boasts several key features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for New Mexico campers.
Unplugged Experience: A significant highlight is the complete lack of internet or cell service. As one reviewer put it, "Love this campground other than the fact there's no Internet or cell service at all." Another embraced this, stating, "Read a book and painted since no internet. Very peaceful here." This provides a rare and valuable opportunity to truly disconnect from digital distractions and immerse oneself in the natural surroundings.
Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: The campground is described as "Very peaceful here" and "Nice and quite." Its location along the gentle waters of the Rio Grande, within a gorge where traffic and visitation are often light, contributes to a serene ambiance, providing a genuine escape from urban noise.
Riverside Access and Activities: Being situated directly on the banks of the Rio Grande offers prime access for a variety of water-based activities. The "gentle waters with occasional small rapids" in Orilla Verde are ideal for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and non-whitewater rafting. Designated boat launches are available, enhancing convenience for paddlers.
Exceptional Camp Hosts: The consistent praise for the camp hosts ("terrific people," "very attentive," "helpful and friendly") is a major draw. Knowledgeable and welcoming hosts can significantly improve a camping trip, providing local insights and ensuring a pleasant stay.
Proximity to Taos: Although secluded, the campground is only about 13-16 miles from Taos. This offers convenient access to a larger town for groceries, laundry facilities (beyond the campground's showers), art galleries, restaurants, and other cultural experiences, providing a balanced blend of wilderness and accessibility.
Hiking and Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The surrounding Rio Grande Gorge and Orilla Verde Recreation Area offer "wonderful hiking opportunities" and chances for wildlife viewing, including bighorn sheep. The trails, though steep in some areas, provide incredible views and an active way to explore the landscape.

Rio Bravo Campground Reviews
Love this campground other than the fact there's no Internet or cell service at all. Hosts, Randy and Sue, are terrific people. Restrooms and showers are so clean but will cost you $1.00 for 4 minutes but they are hot and have good pressure.
Oct 03, 2024 · Layne CostelloStayed 14 days (5.2-5.16.25). Showers are wonderful and quarter operated. Kether, the Camphost, and his dog, Choco, are very attentive to keeping bathrooms clean and very helpful and friendly to guests. Nice change from some other campgrounds. Taos is 13 miles away for groceries and laundry. Will return. Read a book and painted since no internet. Very peaceful here
May 16, 2025 · Elizabeth VeverkaWhat a gem of a place right on the Rio Grand river. Lots of trees, firewood available from camp host at a reasonable price. 7.00 a night tent camping. Bathrooms available. We loved this place and will return!
Oct 05, 2021 · Elizabeth TaylorTotally underrated campground! We stayed here in our 28’ motorhome. For two nights we paid $30, which included water & electric hook ups! A great bargain considering the average price of most rv parks. Beautiful scenery, right on the rio grande. Showers available for a fee. About 25 mins to downtown Taos! I would definitely return again.
Mar 26, 2024 · Kelsey EWAS KEPT AWAKE UNTIL 3:00am by the 15+ people in 6 tents all drunk in space 2 next to us. Had to move our camp at 10:30 so our young kids could sleep and they we’re still kept awake. These people were lighting off fireworks at 2:00am and being LOUD with no respect for anyone else around them until 3:00am. The Host was nice enough but was nowhere to be found after the 10pm quiet time and did nothing to quiet down the disrespectful people next to us. Will not be returning if the POSTED 10pm quiet time is going to be ruined by drunk people acting like idiots
