July 10 · Jake JobesMan, it's a long 30 mile drive from the beginning of the Mount Graham access road, 366, to Riggs Lake, however the drive itself is so scenic that you'll never feel like it was too long. The first portion of the drive after you leave the main highway, Highway 191, is two-lane paved road including many miles of tight switchbacks. If you've driven in Colorado it will seem eerily similar because of the dense pine forest, crazy turns, and intermittent exposures on open edges with no guard rails. About 15 miles into your drive, as you get close to the top, the road turns to washboard dirt, in some places barely two lanes wide.Be very careful on the blind curves once you begin the dirt road. Some people think that they can make time faster by cutting corners a bit and you don't want to meet them to find out that they are wrong. Don't be tempted to drive down the middle of the road unless you can see ahead for a good distance. Hug your outer edge the best you can and take your time, enjoying the various small pullouts along the way as ideal rest points for photos and stretching your legs.Local residents often tow small fishing boats the entire way to the lake and plenty of campers/hunters tow big trailers to various campsites areas along the road. If you can plan a camp-out it will make the road-trip all the nicer and allow you time to enjoy the cool mountain air. I left Safford at noon one day in July and the temp was 103F. By the time I reached the dirt road section it was 78F. When I got to my campsite on a little 4x4 side spur and set up my camp, it was 68F and later through the night it dropped to 54F. An amazing differential that gave me a nice respite from the summer heat.
October 15 · Jim BergstromWhen it is not busy you are assured some eagle activity. Looks like a nice kayak lake.
