Red Mountain Campground is precisely one such destination, providing spectacular views and direct access to the refreshing Cle Elum River. While it’s a popular spot, its natural allure makes it a compelling choice for your next outdoor adventure. This article will provide you with a comprehensive and factual overview of Red Mountain Campground, covering its unique location, available services, and what you can expect, ensuring you’re well-prepared for a memorable trip into our beloved Washington wilderness.
Red Mountain Campground has quickly become a cherished spot for many who have discovered its charm. Its most striking feature is undoubtedly the "spectacular views" it offers, with the majestic Red Mountain serving as a pine-studded backdrop to the clear, inviting waters of the Cle Elum River. This creates a postcard-perfect setting that is hard to resist, especially on a sunny Washington day. The campground comprises a modest number of sites, typically around 10, which means it can feel quite intimate. While some sites are praised for their "wonderfully secluded" nature with easy lake/river access via small trails, others can be "very close," meaning privacy can vary, especially on busy weekends. Indeed, this campground fills up fast, particularly on Fridays in mid-July, often by 2:00 PM. So, if you're planning a weekend visit, an early arrival is crucial to secure a spot. Despite the potential for crowds, especially on weekends when day-use visitors flock to the river, the general atmosphere remains remarkably peaceful, with noise rarely being an issue. This balance of natural beauty and a vibrant, albeit sometimes busy, outdoor scene makes Red Mountain Campground a unique and appealing destination for Washington locals seeking both adventure and connection with nature.
Red Mountain Campground is strategically located on Salmon La Sac Road, Ronald, WA 98940, USA. This places it within the stunning Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, a vast expanse of wilderness in Central Washington renowned for its outdoor recreation opportunities. For Washingtonians, especially those in the Puget Sound area, the drive involves a scenic journey eastward on I-90, taking Exit 80 towards Salmon La Sac, and then continuing on WA-903 North, which becomes Salmon La Sac Road. The campground itself is situated on the left side of Salmon La Sac Road, just past Cle Elum Lake and Cayuse Campground. While it’s fairly close to the main road, contributing to some car noise, this proximity also means relatively easy access compared to more remote backcountry sites. However, a key point for accessibility is the campground's entrance, which can be "extremely easy to miss" due to its placement on the right side of the road while the main road sign is on the left. It's advisable to pay close attention to signage as you approach. This location provides a gateway to numerous trails and the refreshing waters of the Cle Elum River, making it a convenient basecamp for exploring the surrounding natural wonders of the Washington Cascades.
Red Mountain Campground offers essential services and amenities, focusing on providing a comfortable yet rustic camping experience, typical of forest service campgrounds in Washington.

Red Mountain Campground Reviews
My friend and I stayed here in the last site, and it was wonderfully secluded from the rest of the campground, as the adjacent site was empty. Getting to the bathroom was a bit of a trek, but our site also had easy access to the lake via a small trail, and a nice amount of cover. It’s pretty close to the road, so you do get some car noise from time to time, but I didn’t find it too bad. The entrance is extremely easy to miss, though; I ended up in the day use area at first, wondering what I’d missed. There’s a sign on the main road, but it’s on the left, while the little road leading to the campground is on the right.
Jun 22, 2023 · Kinbri SipesThe views from this campsite are spectacular! It is so beautiful and the water is perfect. I arrived around 2:00pm on a Friday in mid-July and there were 2 spots available (out of 10). After about an hour all the spots were filled, so if you were planning on finding a spot after work on a Friday, then this isn't the place. There were multiple people that came around 5ish looking for spots and couldn't find any. Different times of the year may be different, but from what I experienced it filled up fast. There is a bathroom available and a dumpster for getting rid of waste which is nice and probably helps the campground stay clean. The only downside was that it was pretty crowded during the weekend and the campsites were very close. If you're looking for a secluded place to pitch a tent in the woods, this is not the place for you. You can see everyone else's tent and some of the spots literally touch each other. For the most part everyone was quiet though and noise was never an issue, but it definitely didn't feel private. On Saturdays and Sundays it got REALLY crowded because people just came for the day to swim in the river and there was probably about 20 people (and 6/7 cars) parked right at the front blocking the walk down to the water. If you don't mind small crowds of people then you'll be fine, but it wasn't really my thing. I bet if you can go during the week though it's amazing and quiet.
Jul 30, 2018 · Marie LassleyWe drove out in a Friday night to the Cle Elum area for a two night camping trip. Lucky enough, there was a good spot with a river and mountain(s) view at the Red Mountain Campground. A night was $14 and you get a camping spot with a great view, if you are lucky, with a firepit and a picnic table and well-maintained bathroom. No drinking water/shower or any other amenities available.

Oct 16, 2022 · Shanna ScaddingNice camp with river access. Kind of a bit noisey due to the proximity to the road. Many atvs and other exessively loud vehicles.
