Racetrack campground

Racetrack Rd, Deer Lodge, MT 59722, USA

4.0
This is beautiful area. Good ATV'ing with a very rapidly moving creek that borders on a river volume wise. The reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because firewood is a pain to come by and the roads aren't the best. Bring an axe and maybe some firewood. And it drops to the low 40's even on 80+°F summer days. - Jordan Hidde

Location and Accessibility

Racetrack Campground is situated in a picturesque area near Deer Lodge, Montana, specifically at Racetrack Rd, Deer Lodge, MT 59722, USA. Its location within a National Forest means it offers an immersive wilderness experience, yet it remains relatively accessible for Montana residents. It's important for prospective visitors to be aware that the road leading to Racetrack Campground can be quite rough, especially the further one ventures. Reviewers often mention that "the road is pretty rough," and that "the further you go up, the worse the road gets." This characteristic, while potentially challenging for some vehicles, is also seen by many as a filter that ensures a more dedicated and adventurous crowd, contributing to the secluded and less crowded nature of the prime camping spots.

For those traveling from various parts of Montana, planning for this road condition is crucial. A vehicle with good clearance is highly recommended, and four-wheel drive might be beneficial, especially after adverse weather conditions. Despite the challenging access, the consensus is that "the better the camping gets" the further you go, suggesting that the effort is well rewarded with superior camping experiences. Additionally, it's worth noting that while the campground itself is a National Forest pay campground, there are "free dispersed options before and after the campground," offering flexibility for different camping preferences and budgets.

One key aspect of Racetrack Campground's accessibility, or lack thereof, is the absence of cell reception. This feature is consistently highlighted in reviews, making it an ideal destination for those truly looking to unplug and escape digital distractions. Its suitability for locals is multifaceted, appealing to those who seek a genuine escape from the ordinary and a deeper connection with Montana's rugged natural beauty.

Firstly, the campground's primary appeal lies in its exceptional opportunities for ATVing and exploring "multiple trails and fire roads." For many Montanans, off-road vehicle recreation is a beloved pastime, and Racetrack provides a dedicated and expansive playground for this activity. This direct catering to a popular local pursuit makes it an ideal choice for weekend adventures or longer excursions with friends and family who share this passion.
