I liked this place. The scenery around Lassen is impressive! But... The time we went the camp store was closed and under renovation (fortunately I didn't forget anything major and was only there one night.) Also, IMHO the camp spaces are a little too close together and there are too many in one spot so when everyone lit a fire at night it was pretty smoky. Still... Completely fine for just one day, ymmv. The restrooms were well maintained, so thx to the park staff for making sure about that.PLENTY of trails around the camp or an easy drive away. Don't miss the reflection lake trail. It's across the main road from the camp site and only half a mile, but has some great views. Also, look at the weather / temp forecast. It's at altitude and can get pretty cold at night. - Meadhbh Hamrick

Queen Lily Campground Introduce

For Californians eager to explore the unique volcanic landscapes and pristine wilderness of Lassen Volcanic National Park, Queen Lily Campground offers a convenient and generally tranquil basecamp. Nestled amidst the impressive scenery of the Lassen area, this campground provides a comfortable, albeit rustic, setting for experiencing one of California's hidden geological wonders. While it offers essential amenities to enhance your stay, Queen Lily Campground truly shines as a gateway to countless trails, breathtaking views, and the opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and immerse yourself in the natural grandeur of the Sierra Nevada's northern reaches.

Queen Lily Campground is located within or in very close proximity to Lassen Volcanic National Park, in California, USA. This places it in a high-altitude environment, surrounded by the distinctive and dramatic volcanic features for which Lassen is renowned. The specific address, while broadly "California, USA," points to its location as a prime spot for accessing the park's trails and natural attractions. It is situated at an elevation that can bring cooler temperatures, especially at night, which is a key consideration for visitors. The campground's setting allows for easy access to various park highlights, including Reflection Lake and numerous other trails that explore the unique hydrothermal areas and forests.

Accessibility to Queen Lily Campground is generally good, as it's part of a well-established National Park system. While specific road numbers aren't provided, being within or near Lassen Volcanic National Park suggests access via paved park roads, which are typically well-maintained during the open season. The park generally has two main entrances: the Manzanita Lake Entrance in the north and the Southwest Entrance. Depending on its exact location within or near the park, Queen Lily Campground would be accessed from one of these main park roads.

Once inside the campground, sites are usually laid out to accommodate both tents and recreational vehicles, though the reviews suggest that some "camp spaces are a little too close together" and there are "too many in one spot," which can lead to a less private experience, especially when many campers have fires. However, its overall tranquility is often noted, particularly during quieter periods. The proximity of trails, such as the Reflection Lake trail "across the main road from the camp site," highlights its convenient accessibility to recreational opportunities. Visitors should always check the park's official website for current road conditions, particularly in spring and fall, as high-altitude locations can be subject to snow closures.

Queen Lily Campground provides a mix of essential and comforting services, balancing a rustic outdoor experience with practical amenities:

  • Restrooms with Flush Toilets and Sinks: A significant comfort highlight is the presence of "flush toilets & sinks," which are "well maintained." This amenity is greatly appreciated by campers and offers a more comfortable experience compared to vault toilets found in more primitive campgrounds.

  • Fire Rings: Each campsite typically includes a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy campfires (conditions permitting; always check for fire restrictions). However, due to sites being "too close together," this can lead to "pretty smoky" conditions when many fires are lit.

  • No Potable Water (at times): A critical point to note is that during one visitor's stay, there was "No potable water while we were there." While this may not be a permanent condition, it underscores the importance of always bringing your own water or having a reliable purification method when camping in remote or high-altitude areas. It's advisable to check current water availability with park staff before your visit.

  • Camp Store (seasonal/under renovation): A camp store exists, but was noted to be "closed and under renovation" during one visit. When open, a camp store can provide essential supplies, snacks, and souvenirs, so checking its operational status is recommended.

  • Designated Tent and RV Sites: The campground accommodates both tent campers and RV/trailer campers, with sites presumably suitable for various setups.

  • Trash Management: While not explicitly detailed, National Park Service campgrounds typically have designated trash receptacles to help maintain cleanliness and protect wildlife.

  • Water Access (Non-Potable): Reviewers noted being able to "hear water and walk 25 ft down to enjoy it," suggesting a nearby natural water source like a creek, which could be refreshing but not for drinking without purification.

Queen Lily Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that enhance the camping experience:

  • Impressive Lassen Scenery: The "scenery around Lassen is impressive!" with unique volcanic formations, hydrothermal areas, and pristine forests offering a visually stunning environment.

  • Abundant Hiking Trails: There are "PLENTY of trails around the camp or an easy drive away." The "Reflection Lake trail" is specifically highlighted as a must-do, being "only half a mile" from the camp with "great views." The broader Lassen Volcanic National Park offers a vast network of trails for all skill levels, from easy strolls to challenging climbs up volcanic peaks.

  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite sites potentially being close, the campground was noted to be "nice & quiet the weekend we were there (9/17/24)," suggesting a generally peaceful ambiance, especially outside of peak fire-lighting times.

  • High Altitude Experience: Being at altitude, it "can get pretty cold at night," providing a refreshing escape from California's summer heat and offering crisp mountain air. Proper layering and warm sleeping gear are essential.

  • Proximity to Park Attractions: The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse attractions of Lassen Volcanic National Park, including Boiling Springs Lake, Bumpass Hell (when open), and the summit of Lassen Peak itself.

  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The natural setting means opportunities to observe local wildlife, though campers should always practice bear-aware precautions given it is bear country.

  • "Bigfoot Camper Society": One quirky review mentions the "big foot camper society were awesome," suggesting a friendly and unique community of fellow campers that can add to the social experience.

  • Access to Drakesbad: The Drakesbad Guest Ranch area within the park (though separate from the campground) offers hot spring fed pools and dining, which could be an interesting side trip for campers.
