Nestled in the scenic beauty of Burney, CA, this long-standing family campground has been a cherished destination for generations, offering a quintessential Northern California outdoor experience. For years, it has been a go-to spot for families seeking to relax, reconnect with nature, and create lasting memories. While its past shines brightly with fond recollections of well-maintained facilities and vibrant activities, it's important for prospective visitors to understand the current state of the camp. This article aims to provide a factual, engaging, and informative overview, drawing from recent experiences to help you decide if PSEA Camp Shasta is the right choice for your next California family adventure.
PSEA Camp Shasta is conveniently located at 36771 Clark Creek Rd, Burney, CA 96013, USA. This address places it within Shasta County, a region renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including the majestic Mount Shasta, numerous lakes, and extensive forested areas. For Californians, this location offers a balance of accessibility and immersion in nature. Burney is a relatively small community, providing essential services without the hustle and bustle of larger cities, making for a tranquil retreat. The camp's specific address on Clark Creek Road suggests a setting that's easily reachable by typical family vehicles, yet removed enough from main thoroughfares to offer peace and quiet. Its position in Northern California makes it an attractive destination for residents across the state, particularly those looking for a significant change of scenery and an escape into a more rugged, natural environment. While the immediate vicinity might be rustic, the overall region provides ample opportunities for exploration of greater Shasta County attractions, making it a good base camp for wider adventures.
PSEA Camp Shasta offers a range of services and facilities aimed at providing a comfortable and engaging family camping experience. However, recent visitor feedback indicates that some of these amenities are currently experiencing maintenance challenges. Here's what you can expect:
- Cabin Accommodations: The campground offers cabins, providing a more sheltered option for those who prefer not to tent camp. However, be aware that maintenance issues, such as backed-up showers, have been reported. While caretakers attempt repairs, these may be temporary fixes, indicating a need for more substantial funding or attention to upkeep.
- Swimming Pool: A significant highlight and a major draw for families, the camp features a swimming pool. Recent reviews, however, strongly indicate that the pool's filter system may not be functioning properly, leading to issues like green algae. Despite the caretaker's best efforts, professional assistance seems to be needed to restore the pool to optimal, swimmable condition. This is a critical point for visitors who prioritize pool access.
- Children's Playground Area: The camp includes a playground for children, a valuable amenity for younger guests. However, it's been noted that the playground area also shows signs of disrepair, with elements like a basketball hoop potentially falling off and weeds growing near the pool and concrete, suggesting a lack of regular upkeep.
- Ping Pong Table: A ping pong table is available for recreation, but visitors should be aware that it may lack a net, impacting its usability.
- On-Site Caretaker: A caretaker is present on-site and attempts to address immediate issues, such as shower blockages. Their efforts are appreciated by visitors, but some problems appear to be beyond their immediate capacity or resources to fix permanently.
- Fire Pits: It is implied that fire pits are available, as a review mentions rattlesnakes being left near one. This suggests campers can enjoy campfires, a quintessential part of the camping experience.
PSEA Camp Shasta possesses several features and highlights that, despite current challenges, contribute to its potential as a cherished family destination for Californians.
- Longstanding Family Tradition: For many Californians, PSEA Camp Shasta is more than just a campground; it's a place steeped in family tradition and childhood memories. Visitors who came as children now bring their own families, highlighting its historical significance as a beloved summer retreat. This emotional connection makes it a unique destination.
- Rustic Charm and Natural Beauty: The camp offers an authentic, rustic outdoor experience amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Burney, CA. This allows for a true escape from urban environments and an opportunity to connect with nature's tranquility.
- Potential for Recreational Activities: When properly maintained, the swimming pool and playground offer excellent recreational opportunities for families. These amenities are crucial for keeping children entertained and providing a central gathering point for relaxation and fun.
- Community and Shared Experience: The presence of a caretaker and the general atmosphere suggest a close-knit community feel, where visitors often interact and share their experiences, fostering a friendly environment.
- Wildlife Encounters (Caution Advised): While not a "highlight" in the traditional sense, the presence of wildlife like rattlesnakes is part of being immersed in nature. Visitors should be aware of this and exercise caution, especially with children and pets. This is a reminder that you are truly in a wild environment.
- Opportunity for Restoration and Support: The strong sentiments expressed by long-time visitors, particularly regarding the pool, highlight a passionate desire to see the camp restored to its former glory. This indicates a potential for community involvement or support for its revitalization, appealing to those who wish to contribute to saving a historic California camp.
- Ideal for Relaxation and Soaking up Nature: Despite the maintenance issues, the core appeal for many remains the opportunity "to relax by the pool and soak up the sun and the beauty of the nature." This suggests that even with challenges, the natural setting itself provides a valuable respite.

PSEA Camp Shasta Reviews
My family visited last month. I had visited here as a child but had not been back in decades. Sadly, this family campground has gone downhill. The shower in our cabin was backed up, and although the caretaker on site attempted to fix it, the shower plugged up several times after. She attempted to fix it again and that was just a temporary fix. It appears there are no funds for keeping the cabins in good condition, as well as the swimming pool and playground area. The basketball hoop is about to fall off, there are weeds right next to the pool coming out of the cement, and the children's pool has been covered over by a deck with folding chairs. The ping pong table has no net. The swimming pool has a broken skimmer. This all makes me sad, as these campsites used to be far better maintained. I don't anticipate we will be returning. On a side note, there were 3 rattlesnakes that were caught and killed by a visitor of another cabin. These snakes were left dead, draped over a rock next to the firepit. No attempt was made by the caretaker to dispose of the snakes. I have a young child and did not want these deadly dead snakes right next to the playground. Please, can anyone help save this campsite?
Jul 22, 2024 · Andrea KillionPool needs major work. I’ve been coming up here for over 40 years. I enjoy looking forward to this trip every year. Pool was a big disappointment. Filter system not working and green alga. My son and dad tried numerous times to get it going and they did for a bit. But Shasta need a pro to take care of the system and get it working properly. The caretaker had done her best. But has no clue. Said she was calling someone for help. Hopefully she did for the next arrivals. If not the pool will not be swimmable. maybe have a pool company come out at least twice a month to take care of it. This is my to go spot for the week. Just to relax by the pool and soak up the sun and the beauty of the nature. Sorry to say if the pool won’t be up and running our families probably won’t be back.KEEP THE POOL ALIVE!!!!SAVE CAMP SHASTA POOL!!!!
Jul 31, 2024 · Tammy ParcherNice accommodations. Apparently a little run down in the past. However, the new caretaker Bob is doing a great job to restore the natural beauty and appeal.
Jun 03, 2019 · Bob StotlerGreat host Bob. Have all essentials in place. BBQ is all up. Some more activities could have been added for more time to be spent.
