Prospector Campground

White River National Forest, Dillon, CO 80435, USA

4.0
Prospector was a great place to hike with your pup(s). It was clean, the host was attentive, the water had iron in it which I am not into but it had water unlike so many this year. The trails were awesome!!! Me and my pup walked along the lake shore between loop D and E mornings and at dusk...BEAUTIFUL! Sites are relatively close but there's a lot of green between them. Many have nothing behind them but forest (love that)! There's trash bins but like maybe one per loop, water spigots around the loops (not at every site), vault toilets. I was in site 48D, no leveling needed, little patches of trees around me. I was in the "Y"of two roads (busy) but had toilet and water right across the street. I only stayed 2 nights but enjoyed my stay. Thunderstorm during the night kept the temperatures very comfortable. - AnnMarie

Services Offered

Prospector Campground offers a range of essential services and facilities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience, particularly for those who appreciate traditional, non-hookup camping:

  • Campsites: The campground is large, featuring 105 campsites spread across five loops (A, B, C, D & E). Sites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, although some sites are "only for small rigs or tents," and careful consideration of length and width is advised for RVs with slide-outs.
  • Site Amenities: Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grate, providing the basics for outdoor dining and campfires (always check for fire bans).
  • Restrooms: Vault toilets are available throughout the campground loops. These facilities are consistently praised by visitors for their cleanliness and maintenance, often described as "clean restrooms" and "well maintained."
  • Drinking Water: Water spigots are located around the loops, though not at every site. While water is generally available, campers should be aware that it sometimes has an "iron" taste, and occasionally, potable water may be unavailable due to issues like burst pipes or bacteria, necessitating a short drive to Dillon or Frisco for alternative sources. It is always wise to bring extra water or a purification method.
  • No Electrical Hookups: Prospector Campground does not offer electrical hookups at any of its sites, maintaining a more traditional camping atmosphere.
  • No Sewer Hookups: There are no sewer hookups at individual sites. A dump station and fresh water fill-up are conveniently located approximately 9 minutes away at the bottom of the hill near Lake Dillon.
  • Trash Collection: Trash bins are available, typically "one per loop," making responsible waste disposal convenient for campers.
  • Camp Hosts: Two campground hosts are generally on-site, one in each loop. They are described as "attentive" and helpful, available to assist campers and manage the campground's operations.
  • Firewood for Sale: Firewood is often available for purchase directly from the camp hosts, typically paid for in cash.
  • Pet-Friendly: The campground is welcoming to dogs, making it a "great place to hike with your pup(s)," provided they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them.
  • Cell Service: Good cell service (e.g., 4G Verizon) is reported in the area, allowing for connectivity if needed.
